Data Acquisition and Analysis of the 76Ge Double Beta Experiment in Gran Sasso 1990-2003
Data acquisition in a long running underground experiment has its specific
experimental challenges, concerning data acquisition, stability of the
experiment and background reduction. These problems are addressed here for the
HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment, which collected data in the period August 1990 -
May 2003. The measurement and the analysis of the data is presented. The duty
cycle of the experiment was ~80%, the collected statistics is 71.7 kgy. The
background achieved in the energy region of the Q value for double beta decay
is 0.11 events/kg y keV. The two-neutrino accompanied half-life is determined
on the basis of more than 100 000 events. The confidence level for the
neutrinoless signal has been improved to a 4 sigma level.Comment: Full version (50 pages, 36 figures, 9 tables), zipped ps file (size

The Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (LEGEND)
The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0)
would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neutrinos are Majorana
particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable
experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana
neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with
excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of
0.1 count /(FWHMtyr) in the region of the signal. The
current generation Ge experiments GERDA and the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR
utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution
of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in
the 0 signal region of all 0
experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed
to pursue a tonne-scale Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop
a phased 0 experimental program with discovery potential
at a half-life approaching or at years, using existing resources as
appropriate to expedite physics results.Comment: Proceedings of the MEDEX'17 meeting (Prague, May 29 - June 2, 2017
Ibrutinib as initial therapy for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Background: chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) primarily affects older persons who often have coexisting conditions in addition to disease-related immunosuppression and myelosuppression. We conducted an international, open-label, randomized phase 3 trial to compare two oral agents, ibrutinib and chlorambucil, in previously untreated older patients with CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma. Methods: we randomly assigned 269 previously untreated patients who were 65 years of age or older and had CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma to receive ibrutinib or chlorambucil. The primary end point was progression-free survival as assessed by an independent review committee. Results: the median age of the patients was 73 years. During a median follow-up period of 18.4 months, ibrutinib resulted in significantly longer progression-free survival than did chlorambucil (median, not reached vs. 18.9 months), with a risk of progression or death that was 84% lower with ibrutinib than that with chlorambucil (hazard ratio, 0.16; P<0.001). Ibrutinib significantly prolonged overall survival; the estimated survival rate at 24 months was 98% with ibrutinib versus 85% with chlorambucil, with a relative risk of death that was 84% lower in the ibrutinib group than in the chlorambucil group (hazard ratio, 0.16; P=0.001). The overall response rate was higher with ibrutinib than with chlorambucil (86% vs. 35%, P<0.001). The rates of sustained increases from baseline values in the hemoglobin and platelet levels were higher with ibrutinib. Adverse events of any grade that occurred in at least 20% of the patients receiving ibrutinib included diarrhea, fatigue, cough, and nausea; adverse events occurring in at least 20% of those receiving chlorambucil included nausea, fatigue, neutropenia, anemia, and vomiting. In the ibrutinib group, four patients had a grade 3 hemorrhage and one had a grade 4 hemorrhage. A total of 87% of the patients in the ibrutinib group are continuing to take ibrutinib. Conclusions: ibrutinib was superior to chlorambucil in previously untreated patients with CLL or small lymphocytic lymphoma, as assessed by progression-free survival, overall survival, response rate, and improvement in hematologic variables. LEGEND-1000 Preconceptual Design Report
We propose the construction of LEGEND-1000, the ton-scale Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless Decay. This international experiment is designed to answer one of the highest priority questions in fundamental physics. It consists of 1000 kg of Ge detectors enriched to more than 90% in the Ge isotope operated in a liquid argon active shield at a deep underground laboratory. By combining the lowest background levels with the best energy resolution in the field, LEGEND-1000 will perform a quasi-background-free search and can make an unambiguous discovery of neutrinoless double-beta decay with just a handful of counts at the decay value. The experiment is designed to probe this decay with a 99.7%-CL discovery sensitivity in the Ge half-life of years, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass upper limit in the range of 9-21 meV, to cover the inverted-ordering neutrino mass scale with 10 yr of live time
The Power Board of the KM3NeT Digital Optical Module: design, upgrade, and production
The KM3NeT Collaboration is building an underwater neutrino observatory at
the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea consisting of two neutrino telescopes, both
composed of a three-dimensional array of light detectors, known as digital
optical modules. Each digital optical module contains a set of 31 three inch
photomultiplier tubes distributed over the surface of a 0.44 m diameter
pressure-resistant glass sphere. The module includes also calibration
instruments and electronics for power, readout and data acquisition. The power
board was developed to supply power to all the elements of the digital optical
module. The design of the power board began in 2013, and several prototypes
were produced and tested. After an exhaustive validation process in various
laboratories within the KM3NeT Collaboration, a mass production batch began,
resulting in the construction of over 1200 power boards so far. These boards
were integrated in the digital optical modules that have already been produced
and deployed, 828 until October 2023. In 2017, an upgrade of the power board,
to increase reliability and efficiency, was initiated. After the validation of
a pre-production series, a production batch of 800 upgraded boards is currently
underway. This paper describes the design, architecture, upgrade, validation,
and production of the power board, including the reliability studies and tests
conducted to ensure the safe operation at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea
throughout the observatory's lifespa
Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector
602siopenJUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV. Measurement of the beta beta Decay Half-Life of Te-130 with the NEMO-3 Detector
We report results from the NEMO-3 experiment based on an exposure of 1275 days with 661 g of Te-130 in the form of enriched and natural tellurium foils. The beta beta decay rate of Te-130 is found to be greater than zero with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations and the half-life is measured to be T-1/2(2v)=[7.0 +/- 0.9(stat) +/- 1: 1(syst)] x 10(20) yr. This represents the most precise measurement of this half- life yet published and the first real-time observation of this decay
