Twitter is now considered an indispensable tool for news organizations. But what the news organizations have been produced on Twitter? Could you say that Twitter has created new journalistic genres? Studying the tweets of @guardian_world, @folha_mundo (about Egypt’s Revolution), @folha_cotidiano and @el_pais through comparative analysis during a week, it was found that there are new “journalistic genres” (SEIXAS, 2009), which, although common in other fields, were not common in journalistic products when the social institution is an utterer of discourse. The only common journalistc genre is known as “informational”, while the most produced “journalics genres” are the “promotional”, based on direct acts (SEARLE, 1998), the genres of “mediaton”, grounded on retweet, and the “dialogics”.Twitter es considerado una herramienta indispensable para los medios de comunicación. This article is the beginning of a research about criteria of newsworthiness. This is an exploratory survey of event analysis built through a regional informative website and a Brazilian quality paper during a week. The main aim is to analyze the news values, based on Franciscato’s proposal (2014) written in 2002 as a part of his thesis. At first, we make a state of the art studies in Brazil. Then, we show an analysis with the quality paper and the regional informative website. At the end, we present a major consideration: there are combinations between the intrinsic or news values, which are more frequent: proximity to importance, distance to rupture and importance with continuity. Service and influence of social institutions, which are, generally, disregarded factors, should also enter the analysis of newsworthiness.

WHAT IS NEWS IN THE BRAZILIAN COUNTRYSIDE?

The aim of this article is to show how local political culture can influence what makes news, i.e. how it is a newsworthiness factor. A highlight on a news website can become news without any attribute (intrinsic factor), but only because of the power of the elite (extrinsic factor). We analyze the elite power factor in northeastern Brazilian state news during the pre-election period of the 2020 municipal elections. We examine eight regional websites from the two richest and the two poorest regions of Bahia. We want to show how a highlight can become news without any intrinsic factor to the event, and only by elite power as an extrinsic factor. As an alternative to traditional classifications, we performed an analysis of news values that differentiates between intrinsic and extrinsic, and then studied the focus-event. We conclude that one in every 10 highlights from the eight websites in the Bahia countryside during the 2020 pre-election period has elite power as its only newsworthiness criterion

Characterisation of microbial attack on archaeological bone

As part of an EU funded project to investigate the factors influencing bone preservation in the archaeological record, more than 250 bones from 41 archaeological sites in five countries spanning four climatic regions were studied for diagenetic alteration. Sites were selected to cover a range of environmental conditions and archaeological contexts. Microscopic and physical (mercury intrusion porosimetry) analyses of these bones revealed that the majority (68%) had suffered microbial attack. Furthermore, significant differences were found between animal and human bone in both the state of preservation and the type of microbial attack present. These differences in preservation might result from differences in early taphonomy of the bones. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
