    Les incendies de forêts : quelle évolution du risque et comment les propriétaires forestiers peuvent y faire face

    L’objet de cette intervention est de donner quelques clés aux propriétaires forestiers sur l’évolution du risque incendie de forêt et sur les mesures possibles qu’ils peuvent prendre à leur niveau. A l’échelle de l’Europe les modèles de climat prévoient une augmentation du risque incendie qui se traduirait en France par une fréquence et une durée accrues de saisons de feux difficiles, et une extension de la zone à risque incendie vers l’ouest et le nord. En Europe du sud, ce risque est en nette hausse sur les dernières décennies et les surfaces brûlées augmentent, sauf en France, où le risque est encore contenu. Face à ce constat il convient de ne pas relâcher, voire d’augmenter, l’effort de prévention (limitation des départs de feux, équipement des massifs, obligation légale de débroussaillement) et, à leur niveau, les propriétaires peuvent y contribuer. Ils peuvent surtout mettre en place, quand les peuplements le permettent, une sylviculture adaptée au contexte d’incendie, dont quelques principes sont rappelés

    A Kalman Based Hybrid Precoding for Multi-User Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

    Millimeter-wave communication in the 60-GHz band requires large antenna arrays at both the transmit and receive terminals to achieve beamforming gains, in order to counteract the high pathloss. Fully digital techniques are infeasible with large antenna arrays due to hardware constraints at such frequencies, while purely analog solutions suffer severe performance limitations. Hybrid analog/digital beamforming is a promising solution, especially, when extended to a multi-user scenario. This paper conveys three main contributions: 1) a Kalman-based formulation for hybrid analog/digital precoding in multi-user environment is proposed; 2) an analytical expression of the error between the transmitted and estimated data is formulated, so that the Kalman algorithm at the base station does not require information on the estimated data at the mobile stations, and instead, relies only on the precoding/combining matrix; and 3) an iterative solution is designed for the hybrid precoding scheme with affordable complexity. Simulation results confirm significant improvement of the proposed approach in terms of both bit error rate and spectral efficiency–achieving almost 7 b/s/Hz, at 20 dB with 10 channel paths with respect to the analog-only beamsteering, and almost 1 b/s/Hz with respect to the hybrid minimum mean square error precoding under the same conditions

    Study of Freezing and Defrosting Effects on Complex Permittivity of Biological Tissues

    In this letter we study the effect of freezing and defrosting on the dielectric properties of biological tissues. The electromagnetic characterization of tissues at microwave frequencies is crucial for the development of microwave-based biomedical devices. These measurements are often not practical, as tissue degradation restricts the time available between tissue excision and dielectric measurements. For this reason, measurement of tissues that underwent freezing and defrosting may provide researchers with more flexibility in setting measurement campaigns, thus speeding up the development of microwave-based biomedical devices. To this end, this letter presents dielectric measurement on frozen and defrosted tissue, which translates into the following objectives: first, investigate if the dielectric properties of defrosted tissues depend on frozen storage time; second, determine if defrosted tissue dielectric properties differ from those of fresh tissues. As a result, we measure the dielectric properties of ten samples of chicken muscle, bovine liver, and bovine fat, each before and after freezing (up to 14 days) and defrosting. The measurements are performed with the open-ended coaxial probe method at the frequency band of 0.5–8.5 GHz. We observe a slight increase—less than 10%—in complex permittivity of high-water-content tissues (muscle and liver) after defrosting, and negligible effect on fat tissues.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Development of a Transmission-Based Open-Ended Coaxial-Probe Suitable for Axillary Lymph Node Dielectric Measurements

    We assess the feasibility of a transmission-based open-ended coaxial-probe for tissue dielectric properties estimation. The ultimate goal is to use it for axillary lymph node dielectric measurement, which is not trivial when applying the state-of-the-art reflection-based open-ended coaxial-probe. The proposed technique consists in placing the material under test between two opposite open-ended coaxial-probes and record the transmission coefficient. We numerically assess three coaxial probe configurations, in order to ensure adequate transmission and sensing volume. The final setup allows for enough propagation through a 5mm sample (which will be sufficient for the measurements of axillary lymph nodes), while confining the sensing volume to the region of interest. Experimental tests on two materials of different permittivity ranges showed good agreement between the measured and numerical transmission coefficient. Moreover, we observed that the transmission coefficient can highlight the contrast between materials with different dielectric properties.     Development of an Anthropomorphic Phantom of the Axillary Region for Microwave Imaging Assessment

    We produced an anatomically and dielectrically realistic phantom of the axillary region to enable the experimental assessment of Axillary Lymph Node (ALN) imaging using microwave imaging technology. We segmented a thoracic Computed Tomography (CT) scan and created a computer-aided designed file containing the anatomical configuration of the axillary region. The phantom comprises five 3D-printed parts representing the main tissues of interest of the axillary region for the purpose of microwave imaging: fat, muscle, bone, ALNs, and lung. The phantom allows the experimental assessment of multiple anatomical configurations, by including ALNs of different size, shape, and number in several locations. Except for the bone mimicking organ, which is made of solid conductive polymer, we 3D-printed cavities to represent the fat, muscle, ALN, and lung and filled them with appropriate tissue-mimicking liquids. Existing studies about complex permittivity of ALNs have reported limitations. To address these, we measured the complex permittivity of both human and animal lymph nodes using the standard open-ended coaxial-probe technique, over the 0.5 GHz-8.5 GHz frequency band, thus extending current knowledge on dielectric properties of ALNs. Lastly, we numerically evaluated the effect of the polymer which constitutes the cavities of the phantom and compared it to the realistic axillary region. The results showed a maximum difference of 7 dB at 4 GHz in the electric field magnitude coupled to the tissues and a maximum of 10 dB difference in the ALN response.     Boring bivalve traces in modern reef and deeper-water macroid and rhodolith beds

    Macroids and rhodoliths, made by encrusting acervulinid foraminifera and coralline algae, are widely recognized as bioengineers providing relatively stable microhabitats and increasing biodiversity for other species. Macroid and rhodolith beds occur in different depositional settings at various localities and bathymetries worldwide. Six case studies of macroid/rhodolith beds from 0 to 117m water depth in the Pacific Ocean (northern Central Ryukyu Islands, French Polynesia), eastern Australia (Fraser Island, One Tree Reef, Lizard Island), and the Mediterranean Sea (southeastern Spain) show that nodules in the beds are perforated by small-sized boring bivalve traces (Gastrochanolites). On average, boring bivalve shells (gastrochaenids and mytilids) are more slender and smaller than those living inside shallow-water rocky substrates. In the Pacific, Gastrochaena cuneiformis, Gastrochaena sp., Leiosolenus malaccanus, L. mucronatus, L. spp., and Lithophaga/Leiosolenus sp., for the first time identified below 20m water depth, occur as juvenile forms along with rare small-sized adults. In deep-water macroids and rhodoliths the boring bivalves are larger than the shallower counterparts in which growth of juveniles is probably restrained by higher overturn rates of host nodules. In general, most boring bivalves are juveniles that grew faster than the acervulinid foraminiferal and coralline red algal hosts and rarely reached the adult stage. As a consequence of phenotypic plasticity, small-sized adults with slow growth rates coexist with juveniles. Below wave base macroids and rhodoliths had the highest amounts of bioerosion, mainly produced by sponges and polychaete worms.     Inter-hemispheric integration of tactile-motor responses across body parts

    In simple detection tasks, reaction times are faster when stimuli are presented to the visual field or side of the body ipsilateral to the body part used to respond. This advantage, the crossed-uncrossed difference (CUD), is thought to reflect inter-hemispheric interactions needed for sensorimotor information to be integrated between the two cerebral hemispheres. However, it is unknown whether the tactile CUD is invariant when different body parts are stimulated. The most likely structure mediating such processing is thought to be the corpus callosum (CC). Neurophysiological studies have shown that there are denser callosal connections between regions that represent proximal parts of the body near the body midline and more sparse connections for regions representing distal extremities. Therefore, if the information transfer between the two hemispheres is affected by the density of callosal connections, stimuli presented on more distal regions of the body should produce a greater CUD compared to stimuli presented on more proximal regions. This is because interhemispheric transfer of information from regions with sparse callosal connections will be less efficient, and hence slower. Here, we investigated whether the CUD is modulated as a function of the different body parts stimulated by presenting tactile stimuli unpredictably on body parts at different distances from the body midline (i.e., Middle Finger, Forearm, or Forehead of each side of the body). Participants detected the stimulus and responded as fast as possible using either their left or right foot. Results showed that the magnitude of the CUD was larger on the finger (~2.6 ms) and forearm (~1.8 ms) than on the forehead (~-0.9 ms). This result suggests that the interhemispheric transfer of tactile stimuli varies as a function of the strength of callosal connections of the body parts

    Geographical variation in shell shape of the pod razor shell Ensis siliqua (Bivalvia: Pharidae)

    The present study assessed the existence of variation in the shell shape of the pod razor shell (Ensis siliqua) throughout its distributional range in the north- eastern Atlantic. Shells of E. siliqua caught at seven collecting sites (three in Portugal, three in Spain and one in Ireland) were studied by geometric morphometric methods, using both landmark- and contour-based methods. Both approaches (landmarks inside the valves and shell outline) discriminated the shells from Aveiro (centre of Portugal) and Strangford Lough (Ireland) from those caught in the nearby localities (remaining Portuguese and Spanish sites,maximum distance of 550 km by sea). Landmark analysis revealed that shells from Aveiro were more similar to shells from Ireland (*1,500 km far away). Contour anal- ysis revealed that shells from Aveiro had a shape with a comparatively larger height-to-width ratio, whereas shells from Ireland showed a slightly more curved outline than in the remaining sites. Landmark- and contour-based methods provided coherent complementary information, confirming the usefulness of geometric morphometric analyses for discerning differences in shell shape among populations of E. siliqua.
