    THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE GERM-CELL PROBLEM IN VERTEBRATES

    (i) Morphological studies relating to the origin and differentiation of the definitive germ cells in vertebrates have, as indicated, resulted in conflicting views. In many instances two or more competent investigators who have studied the same form have reached different conclusions. (2) Some contend that the germ cells are set aside from the soma during the early stages of embryonic development, and that these alone serve as the progenitors of the functional sex cells. (3) Others recognize an early differentiation of sex cells but hold that these are supplemented by others produced from the somatic epithelium of the gonad in late embryonic or post-embryonic stages. (4) Another group recognizes the early differentiated cells as germ cells but contend that these all degenerate and that the definitive ones are formed from the germinal epithelium. These degenerating germ cells are believed by certain authors to be a phylogenetic recapitulation of the condition in lower forms. (5) Finally, yet another group contends that the so-called primordial germ cells are not germ cells at all but are enlarged cells in some stage of mitosis or in some specific metabolic phase. This group believes that all germ cells are derived from the somatic cells of the germinal epithelium. (6) Experimental work supports the view that the primordial germ cells, which are recognized early, are the progenitors of the definitive sex cells. When these primordial germ cells are prevented from reaching the site of the developing gonad the individual fails to develop sex cells, although a sterile gonad and its associated structures may develop. (7) I suggest that the observed proliferation of germ cells from the germinal epithelium, reported by numerous investigators, can be interpreted in another way by a thorough study of the enlarged germ cells in relation to the epithelium.     Olfactory bulb projections in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana

    The projections of the accessory and main olfactory bulbs of the bullfrog are described as part of a long term analysis of the morphological differences in amphibian and reptilian telencephalons. Unilateral aspiration of the accessory olfactory bulb results in an ipsilateral projection to the pars lateralis of the amygdala via the accessory olfactory tract. Degenerating fibers from the accessory olfactory bulb are tracable into the cell-free zone between the dorsal striatum and the lateral pallium, and projections to these neural populations may also exist. Unilateral lesions of the main olfactory bulb reveal two major secondary pathways: an ipsilateral medial olfactory tract that projects to the rostral ventromedial portion of the medial pallium, the postolfactory eminence and the rostral, lateral and medial septal nuclei; and an ipsilateral lateral olfactory tract that projects to the dorsal striatum, the lateral pallium and the ventral half of the dorsal pallium. Two crossed secondary olfactory pathways to the contralateral telencephalon decussate via the habenular commissure after entering the ipsilateral stria medullaris. A crossed lateral pathway terminates in the dorsal striatum, the caudal, lateral pallium and the ventral portion of the dorsal pallium.     Immune physiology in tissue regeneration and aging, tumor growth, and regenerative medicine

    The immune system plays an important role in immunity (immune surveillance), but also in the regulation of tissue homeostasis (immune physiology). Lessons from the female reproductive tract indicate that immune system related cells, such as intraepithelial T cells and monocyte-derived cells (MDC) in stratified epithelium, interact amongst themselves and degenerate whereas epithelial cells proliferate and differentiate. In adult ovaries, MDC and T cells are present during oocyte renewal from ovarian stem cells. Activated MDC are also associated with follicular development and atresia, and corpus luteum differentiation. Corpus luteum demise resembles rejection of a graft since it is attended by a massive influx of MDC and T cells resulting in parenchymal and vascular regression. Vascular pericytes play important roles in immune physiology, and their activities (including secretion of the Thy-1 differentiation protein) can be regulated by vascular autonomic innervation. In tumors, MDC regulate proliferation of neoplastic cells and angiogenesis. Tumor infiltrating T cells die among malignant cells. Alterations of immune physiology can result in pathology, such as autoimmune, metabolic, and degenerative diseases, but also in infertility and intrauterine growth retardation, fetal morbidity and mortality. Animal experiments indicate that modification of tissue differentiation (retardation or acceleration) during immune adaptation can cause malfunction (persistent immaturity or premature aging) of such tissue during adulthood. Thus successful stem cell therapy will depend on immune physiology in targeted tissues. From this point of view, regenerative medicine is more likely to be successful in acute rather than chronic tissue disorders
