Blood Flow in Channel Constrictions: A Lattice-Boltzmann Consistent Comparison between Newtonian and Non-Newtonian Models
Lattice Boltzmann simulations have been carried out in order to study the flow of blood in normal and constricted blood channels using Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheological models. Instead of using parameters from previous works as is usually done, we propose a new optimization methodology that provides in a consistent manner the complete set of parameters for the studied models, namely Newtonian, Carreau-Yassuda and Kuang-Luo. The optimization was performed simultaneously using experimental data from several sources. Physical observables such as velocity profiles, shear rate profiles and pressure fields were evaluated. For the normal channel case, it was found that the Newtonian model predicts both the highest velocity and shear rates profiles followed by the Carreau-Yassuda and the Kuang-Luo models. For a constricted channel, important differences were found in the velocity profiles among the studied models. First, the Newtonian model was observed to predict the velocity profile maximum at different channel width positions compared to the non-Newtonian ones. Second, the obtained recirculation region was found to be longer for the Newtonian models. Finally, concerning the constriction shape, the global velocity was found to be lower for a rectangular geometry than for a semi-circular one
CMS: A web-based system for visualization and analysis of genome-wide methylation data of human cancers
DNA methylation of promoter CpG islands is associated with gene suppression, and its unique genome-wide profiles have been linked to tumor progression. Coupled with high-throughput sequencing technologies, it can now efficiently determine genome-wide methylation profiles in cancer cells. Also, experimental and computational technologies make it possible to find the functional relationship between cancer-specific methylation patterns and their clinicopathological parameters.Cancer methylome system (CMS) is a web-based database application designed for the visualization, comparison and statistical analysis of human cancer-specific DNA methylation. Methylation intensities were obtained from MBDCap-sequencing, pre-processed and stored in the database. 191 patient samples (169 tumor and 22 normal specimen) and 41 breast cancer cell-lines are deposited in the database, comprising about 6.6 billion uniquely mapped sequence reads. This provides comprehensive and genome-wide epigenetic portraits of human breast cancer and endometrial cancer to date. Two views are proposed for users to better understand methylation structure at the genomic level or systemic methylation alteration at the gene level. In addition, a variety of annotation tracks are provided to cover genomic information. CMS includes important analytic functions for interpretation of methylation data, such as the detection of differentially methylated regions, statistical calculation of global methylation intensities, multiple gene sets of biologically significant categories, interactivity with UCSC via custom-track data. We also present examples of discoveries utilizing the framework.CMS provides visualization and analytic functions for cancer methylome datasets. A comprehensive collection of datasets, a variety of embedded analytic functions and extensive applications with biological and translational significance make this system powerful and unique in cancer methylation research. Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0âKâ0ÎŒ+ÎŒâ
The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay B 0â K â0 ÎŒ + ÎŒ â are studied using a data sample, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at sâ=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1. Several angular observables are measured in bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, q 2. A first measurement of the zero-crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system is also presented. The zero-crossing point is measured to be q20=4.9±0.9GeV2/c4 , where the uncertainty is the sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions
Study of DJ meson decays to D+Ïâ, D0Ï+ and Dâ+Ïâ final states in pp collisions
A study of D+Ïâ, D0Ï+ and Dâ+Ïâ final states is performed using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The D1(2420)0 resonance is observed in the Dâ+Ïâ final state and the Dâ2(2460) resonance is observed in the D+Ïâ, D0Ï+ and Dâ+Ïâ final states. For both resonances, their properties and spin-parity assignments are obtained. In addition, two natural parity and two unnatural parity resonances are observed in the mass region between 2500 and 2800 MeV. Further structures in the region around 3000 MeV are observed in all the Dâ+Ïâ, D+Ïâ and D0Ï+ final states
Search for the decay Bs0âD*âϱ
A search for the decay Bs0âD*âϱ is presented using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0ââfb-1 of pp collisions collected by LHCb. This decay is expected to be mediated by a W-exchange diagram, with little contribution from rescattering processes, and therefore a measurement of the branching fraction will help us to understand the mechanism behind related decays such as Bs0âÏ+Ï- and Bs0âDD- . Systematic uncertainties are minimized by using B0âD*âϱ as a normalization channel. We find no evidence for a signal, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(Bs0âD*âϱ)<6.1(7.8)Ă10-6 at 90% (95%) confidence level
Study of B0(s)âK0Sh+hâČâ decays with first observation of B0sâK0SK±Ïâ and B0sâK0SÏ+Ïâ
A search for charmless three-body decays of B 0 and B0s mesons with a K0S meson in the final state is performed using the pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fbâ1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the B0(s)âK0Sh+hâČâ decay modes (h (âČ) = Ï, K), relative to the well measured B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ decay, are obtained. First observation of the decay modes B0sâK0SK±Ïâ and B0sâK0SÏ+Ïâ and confirmation of the decay B0âK0SK±Ïâ are reported. The following relative branching fraction measurements or limits are obtained B(B0âK0SK±Ïâ)B(B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ)=0.128±0.017(stat.)±0.009(syst.), B(B0âK0SK+Kâ)B(B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ)=0.385±0.031(stat.)±0.023(syst.), B(B0sâK0SÏ+Ïâ)B(B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ)=0.29±0.06(stat.)±0.03(syst.)±0.02(fs/fd), B(B0sâK0SK±Ïâ)B(B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ)=1.48±0.12(stat.)±0.08(syst.)±0.12(fs/fd)B(B0sâK0SK+Kâ)B(B0âK0SÏ+Ïâ)â[0.004;0.068]at90%CL

Observation of the decay B+câBÂșsÏ+
The result of a search for the decay B+câBÂșsÏ+ is presented, using the BÂșsâDs-Ï+ and BÂșsâJ/ÏÏ channels. The analysis is based on a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1ââfb-1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and 2ââfb-1 taken at 8 TeV. The decay B+câBÂșsÏ+ is observed with significance in excess of 5 standard deviations independently in both decay channels. The measured product of the ratio of cross sections and branching fraction is [Ï(Bc+)/Ï(BÂșs)]ĂB(Bc+âBÂșsÏ+)=[2.37±0.31â(stat)±0.11â(syst)-0.13+0.17(ÏBc+)]Ă10-3, in the pseudorapidity range 2<η(B)<5, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the Bc+ lifetime. This is the first observation of a B meson decaying to another B meson via the weak interaction
