A comparative study of radical radiotherapy with weekly paclitaxel versus radical radiotherapy with weekly cisplatin in the management of locally advanced squamous cell carcinomas of head and neck
Background: Concurrent chemo radiation is standard of care in locally advanced squamous cell carcinomas of head and neck. Single agent Cisplatin either weekly or three weekly is commonly used concurrently with radiation. The present study aims to evaluate the response rate and toxicity of radical radiotherapy with weekly paclitaxel and cisplatin in head and neck cancers.Methods: This is a prospective double arm study in which sixty patients with histologically proved squamous cell carcinomas registered in our department were accrued into the study with thirty patients in each arm. All patients were treated using Theratron phoenix 780 cobalt unit with a dose of 66 Gy in 33 fractions. The patients were randomized to receive 40 mg/m2 of weekly cisplatin or 40 mg/m2 of weekly Paclitaxel concurrently with radiation. The response to the therapy was assessed six weeks after completion of treatment. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS software.Results: In cisplatin group 18 patients achieved complete response and 12 patients achieved partial response whereas in Paclitaxel group 21 patients achieved complete response and 9 patients achieved partial response. However in paclitaxel arm the incidence of radiation dermatitis, mucositis, dysphagia and laryngitis are slightly higher compared to cisplatin group.Conclusions: The weekly paclitaxel concurrent with radiation is a feasible alternative to weekly cisplatin in locally advanced squamous cell carcinomas of head and neck
Entanglement Interpretation of Black Hole Entropy in String Theory
We show that the entropy resulting from the counting of microstates of non
extremal black holes using field theory duals of string theories can be
interpreted as arising from entanglement. The conditions for making such an
interpretation consistent are discussed. First, we interpret the entropy (and
thermodynamics) of spacetimes with non degenerate, bifurcating Killing horizons
as arising from entanglement. We use a path integral method to define the
Hartle-Hawking vacuum state in such spacetimes and discuss explicitly its
entangled nature and its relation to the geometry. If string theory on such
spacetimes has a field theory dual, then, in the low-energy, weak coupling
limit, the field theory state that is dual to the Hartle-Hawking state is a
thermofield double state. This allows the comparison of the entanglement
entropy with the entropy of the field theory dual, and thus, with the
Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. As an example, we discuss in
detail the case of the five dimensional anti-de Sitter, black hole spacetime
The Chiral Fermion Meson Model at Finite Temperature
We study the chiral fermion meson model which is the well known linear sigma
model of Gell-Mann-and-Levy at finite temperature.A modified self-consistent
resummation (MSCR) which resums higher order terms in the perturbative
expansion is proposed. It is shown that with the MSCR the problem of tachyonic
masses is solved, the renormalization of the gap equations is carried out and
the Goldstone's theorem is verified. We also apply the method to investigate
another known case at high temperature and compare with results found in the

Birthing practices of traditional birth attendants in South Asia in the context of training programmes
Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA) training has been an important component of public health policy interventions to improve maternal and child health in developing countries since the 1970s. More recently, since the 1990s, the TBA training strategy has been increasingly seen as irrelevant, ineffective or, on the whole, a failure due to evidence that the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in developing countries had not reduced. Although, worldwide data show that, by choice or out of necessity, 47 percent of births in the developing world are assisted by TBAs and/or family members, funding for TBA training has been reduced and moved to providing skilled birth attendants for all births. Any shift in policy needs to be supported by appropriate evidence on TBA roles in providing maternal and infant health care service and effectiveness of the training programmes. This article reviews literature on the characteristics and role of TBAs in South Asia with an emphasis on India. The aim was to assess the contribution of TBAs in providing maternal and infant health care service at different stages of pregnancy and after-delivery and birthing practices adopted in home births. The review of role revealed that apart from TBAs, there are various other people in the community also involved in making decisions about the welfare and health of the birthing mother and new born baby. However, TBAs have changing, localised but nonetheless significant roles in delivery, postnatal and infant care in India. Certain traditional birthing practices such as bathing babies immediately after birth, not weighing babies after birth and not feeding with colostrum are adopted in home births as well as health institutions in India. There is therefore a thin precarious balance between the application of biomedical and traditional knowledge. Customary rituals and perceptions essentially affect practices in home and institutional births and hence training of TBAs need to be implemented in conjunction with community awareness programmes
Strange particle production in proton-proton collisions at TeV with ALICE at the LHC
The production of mesons containing strange quarks (K, ) and both
singly and doubly strange baryons (, Anti-, and
+Anti-) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at
= 0.9 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are
obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009.
Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central
rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report
yields () of 0.184 0.002 stat. 0.006 syst. for K and
0.021 0.004 stat. 0.003 syst. for . For baryons, we find
= 0.048 0.001 stat. 0.004 syst. for , 0.047
0.002 stat. 0.005 syst. for Anti- and 0.0101 0.0020 stat.
0.0009 syst. for +Anti-. The results are also compared with
predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and
provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at

Two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb
collisions at TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is
presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the
longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The
pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than

Particle-yield modification in jet-like azimuthal di-hadron correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The yield of charged particles associated with high- trigger
particles ( GeV/) is measured with the ALICE detector in
Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton
collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted
from the narrow jet-like correlation peaks in azimuthal di-hadron correlations.
In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated
charged particles with transverse momenta GeV/ on the
away-side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the
