[EN] Raulí is one of the most emblematic tree species of the Chilean temperate forests. Due to the high quality wood, this tree has been used for furniture and handicrafts manufacturing, which has positioned raulí as one of the most important commercial timber species in Chile. Currently, the international market demands sustainable production system for forest production, more specifically in plantlets production. In this regard, plant growthpromoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) inoculants may enhance the growth and survival of plantlets in nurseries, which means an increase in the effectiveness of replanting operations. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to isolate, characterize and screen rhizosphere-associated bacteria with PGPR potential, isolated from raulí that growth in volcanic soils in southern Chile. A total of 1,261 bacterial strains were isolated from different volcanic soils. Out of 1,261 isolates, 100 were selected based on their high levels of indole acetic acid (IAA) production. These isolates were then subjected to screening for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase activity, and their ability to fix nitrogen was determined. From the 100 selected isolates, 7 were chosen for producing the highest amount of IAA to continue with genetic characterization based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences. These 7 isolates were characterized as members of the Serratia genus and were used to develop multi-strain inoculant mixtures. Later, a nursery study followed to determine the effect of inoculation with the Serratia strains on the growth of RA88 raulí clone plantlets. The nursery experiment demonstrated that Serratia strains have the potential to increase the root collar diameter, height, relative chlorophyll content, biomass and nitrogen content of raulí plantlets. The study concluded, that Serratia strains have the potential to be used as biofertilizers to increase plant growth in nursery conditions

Why fly blind? Event-based visual guidance for ornithopter robot flight

Under licence Creative Commons - Green Open Access (IEEE).The development of perception and control methods that allow bird-scale flapping-wing robots (a.k.a. ornithopters) to perform autonomously is an under-researched area. This paper presents a fully onboard event-based method for ornithopter robot visual guidance. The method uses event cameras to exploit their fast response and robustness against motion blur in order to feed the ornithopter control loop at high rates (100 Hz). The proposed scheme visually guides the robot using line features extracted in the event image plane and controls the flight by actuating over the horizontal and vertical tail deflections. It has been validated on board a real ornithopter robot with real-time computation in low-cost hardware. The experimental evaluation includes sets of experiments with different maneuvers indoors and outdoors.Consejo Europeo de Investigación (ERC) 78824

Background: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea worldwide. In this study, risk factors associated with the development of severe-complicated and recurrent outcomes in CDI patients in different age groups, including the non-elderly, were assessed in a third-level hospital. Methods: CDI cases were detected by clinical data and polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR). Clinical, demographic, epidemiological, and microbiological risk factors for CDI were evaluated. Results: During the study period, 248 out of 805 patients with nosocomial diarrhea were diagnosed with CDI and the majority were severe-complicated cases (87.90%). Female gender (OR 3.19, 95% CI 1.19e8.55, p ¼ 0.02) and lymphoma (OR 3.95, 95% CI 1.03e15.13, p ¼ 0.04) were risk factors for severe-complicated CDI. Mature adulthood (51e60 years) (OR 5.80, 95% CI 1.56e21.62, p ¼ 0.01), previous rifampicin use (OR 7.44, 95% CI 2.10e26.44, p ¼ 0.00), and neoplasm (solid malignant neoplasm or hematological malignancies) (OR 4.12, 95% CI 1.01e16.83, p ¼ 0.04) were risk factors for recurrent infection. Autoimmune disorders (OR 6.62, CI 95% 1.26e34.73, p ¼ 0.02), leukemia (OR 4.97, 95% CI 1.05e23.58, p ¼ 0.04), lymphoma (OR 3.79, 95% CI 1.03e12.07, p ¼ 0.04) and previous colistin treatment (OR 4.97, 95% CI 1.05e23.58, p ¼ 0.04) were risk factors for 30-day mortality. Conclusion: Newly identified risk factors for recurrent CDI were rifampicin treatment and age between 51 and 60 years; colistin treatment was identified as a risk factor for 30-day mortality. Previously identified risk factors for severe-complicated CDI were confirmed, but with a major impact on non-elderly patients

Ferromanganese nodules and micro-hardgrounds associated with the Cadiz Contourite Channel (NE Atlantic): Palaeoenvironmental records of fluid venting and bottom currents

    Get PDF
Ferromanganese nodule fields and hardgrounds have recently been discovered in the Cadiz Contourite Channel in the Gulf of Cadiz (850–1000 m). This channel is part of a large contourite depositional system generated by the Mediterranean Outflow Water. Ferromanganese deposits linked to contourites are interesting tools for palaeoenviromental studies and show an increasing economic interest as potential mineral resources for base and strategic metals. We present a complete characterisation of these deposits based on submarine photographs and geophysical, petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical data. The genesis and growth of ferromanganese deposits, strongly enriched in Fe vs. Mn (av. 39% vs. 6%) in this contourite depositional system result from the combination of hydrogenetic and diagenetic processes. The interaction of the Mediterranean Outflow Water with the continental margin has led to the formation of Late Pleistocene–Holocene ferromanganese mineral deposits, in parallel to the evolution of the contourite depositional system triggered by climatic and tectonic events. The diagenetic growth was fuelled by the anaerobic oxidation of thermogenic hydrocarbons (δ13CPDB=−20 to −37‰) and organic matter within the channel floor sediments, promoting the formation of Fe–Mn carbonate nodules. High 87Sr/86Sr isotopic values (up to 0.70993±0.00025) observed in the inner parts of nodules are related to the influence of radiogenic fluids fuelled by deep-seated fluid venting across the fault systems in the diapirs below the Cadiz Contourite Channel. Erosive action of the Mediterranean Outflow Water undercurrent could have exhumed the Fe–Mn carbonate nodules, especially in the glacial periods, when the lower core of the undercurrent was more active in the study area. The growth rate determined by 230Thexcess/232Th was 113±11 mm/Ma, supporting the hypothesis that the growth of the nodules records palaeoenvironmental changes during the last 70 ka. Ca-rich layers in the nodules could point to the interaction between the Mediterranean Outflow Water and the North Atlantic Deep Water during the Heinrich events. Siderite–rhodochrosite nodules exposed to the oxidising seabottom waters were replaced by Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides. Slow hydrogenetic growth of goethite from the seawaters is observed in the outermost parts of the exhumed nodules and hardgrounds, which show imprints of the Mediterranean Outflow Water with low 87Sr/86Sr isotopic values (down to 0.70693±0.00081). We propose a new genetic and evolutionary model for ferromanganese oxide nodules derived from ferromanganese carbonate nodules formed on continental margins above the carbonate compensation depth and dominated by hydrocarbon seepage structures and strong erosive action of bottom currents. We also compare and discuss the generation of ferromanganese deposits in the Cadiz Contourite Channel with that in other locations and suggest that our model can be applied to ferromanganiferous deposits in other contouritic systems affected by fluid venting
