    Elastic double diffractive production of axial-vector \chi_c(1^{++}) mesons and the Landau-Yang theorem

    We discuss exclusive elastic double diffractive axial-vector \chi_c(1^{+}) meson production in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. The amplitude for the process is derived within the k_t-factorisation approach with unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDFs). We show that the famous Landau-Yang theorem is not applicable in the case of off-shell gluons. Differential cross sections for different UGDFs are calculated. We compare exclusive production of \chi_c(1^+) and \chi_c(0^+). The contribution of \chi_c(1^+) to the J/\Psi + \gamma channel is smaller than that of the \chi_c(0^+) decay, but not negligible and can be measured. The numerical value of the ratio of the both contributions is almost independent of UGDFs modeling.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, a numerical error corrected, discussions extended, conclusions unchange

    Study protocol: a randomised controlled trial on the clinical effects of levothyroxine treatment for subclinical hypothyroidism in people aged 80 years and over

    Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism is common in older people and its contribution to health and disease needs to be elucidated further. Observational and clinical trial data on the clinical effects of subclinical hypothyroidism in persons aged 80 years and over is inconclusive, with some studies suggesting harm and some suggesting benefits, translating into equipoise whether levothyroxine therapy provides clinical benefits. This manuscript describes the study protocol for the Institute for Evidence-Based Medicine in Old Age (IEMO) 80-plus thyroid trial to generate the necessary evidence base. Methods: The IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial was explicitly designed as an ancillary experiment to the Thyroid hormone Replacement for Untreated older adults with Subclinical hypothyroidism randomised placebo controlled Trial (TRUST) with a near identical protocol and shared research infrastructure. Outcomes will be presented separately for the IEMO and TRUST 80-plus groups, as well as a pre-planned combined analysis of the 145 participants included in the IEMO trial and the 146 participants from the TRUST thyroid trial aged 80 years and over. The IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial is a multi-centre randomised double-blind placebo-controlled parallel group trial of levothyroxine treatment in community-dwelling participants aged 80 years and over with persistent subclinical hypothyroidism (TSH ≥4.6 and ≤ 19.9 mU/L and fT4 within laboratory reference ranges). Participants are randomised to levothyroxine 25 or 50 micrograms daily or matching placebo with dose titrations according to TSH levels, for a minimum follow-up of one and a maximum of three years. Primary study endpoints: hypothyroid physical symptoms and tiredness on the thyroid-related quality of life patient-reported outcome (ThyPRO) at one year. Secondary endpoints: generic quality of life, executive cognitive function, handgrip strength, functional ability, blood pressure, weight, body mass index, and mortality. Adverse events will be recorded with specific interest on cardiovascular endpoints such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Discussion: The combined analysis of participants in the IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial with the participants aged over 80 in the TRUST trial will provide the largest experimental evidence base on multimodal effects of levothyroxine treatment in 80-plus persons to date

    Update of Parton Distributions at NNLO

    We present a new set of parton distributions obtained at NNLO. These differ from the previous sets available at NNLO due to improvements in the theoretical treatment. In particular we include a full treatment of heavy flavours in the region near the quark mass. In this way, an essentially complete set of NNLO partons is presented for the first time. The improved treatment leads to a significant change in the gluon and heavy quark distributions, and a larger value of the QCD coupling at NNLO, alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.1191 +/- 0.002(expt.) +/- 0.003(theory). Indirectly this also leads to a change in the light partons at small x and modifications of our predictions for W and Z production at the LHC. As well as the best-fit set of partons, we also provide 30 additional sets representing the uncertainties of the partons obtained using the Hessian approach.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures.     Heavy-quark mass dependence in global PDF analyses and 3- and 4-flavour parton distributions

    We study the sensitivity of our recent MSTW 2008 NLO and NNLO PDF analyses to the values of the charm- and bottom-quark masses, and we provide additional public PDF sets for a wide range of these heavy-quark masses. We quantify the impact of varying m_c and m_b on the cross sections for W, Z and Higgs production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We generate 3- and 4-flavour versions of the (5-flavour) MSTW 2008 PDFs by evolving the input PDFs and alpha_S determined from fits in the 5-flavour scheme, including the eigenvector PDF sets necessary for calculation of PDF uncertainties. As an example of their use, we study the difference in the Z total cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC in the 4- and 5-flavour schemes. Significant differences are found, illustrating the need to resum large logarithms in Q^2/m_b^2 by using the 5-flavour scheme. The 4-flavour scheme is still necessary, however, if cuts are imposed on associated (massive) b-quarks, as is the case for the experimental measurement of Z b bbar production and similar processes.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures.     A calibration method for broad-bandwidth cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy performed with supercontinuum radiation

    An efficient calibration method has been developed for broad-bandwidth cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy. The calibration is performed using phase shift cavity ring-down spectroscopy, which is conveniently implemented through use of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). The AOTF permits a narrowband portion of the SC spectrum to be scanned over the full high-reflectivity bandwidth of the cavity mirrors. After calibration the AOTF is switched off and broad-bandwidth CEAS can be performed with the same light source without any loss of alignment to the set-up. We demonstrate the merits of the method by probing transitions of oxygen molecules O-2 and collisional pairs of oxygen molecules (O-2)(2) in the visible spectral range

    The transport mechanism of the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier

    The mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier imports ADP from the cytosol and exports ATP from the mitochondrial matrix, which are key transport steps for oxidative phosphorylation in eukaryotic organisms. The transport protein belongs to the mitochondrial carrier family, a large transporter family in the inner membrane of mitochondria. It is one of the best studied members of the family and serves as a paradigm for the molecular mechanism of mitochondrial carriers. Structurally, the carrier consists of three homologous domains, each composed of two transmembrane α-helices linked with a loop and short α-helix on the matrix side. The transporter cycles between a cytoplasmic and matrix state in which a central substrate binding site is alternately accessible to these compartments for binding of ADP or ATP. On both the cytoplasmic and matrix side of the carrier are networks consisting of three salt bridges each. In the cytoplasmic state, the matrix salt bridge network is formed and the cytoplasmic network is disrupted, opening the central substrate binding site to the intermembrane space and cytosol, whereas the converse occurs in the matrix state. In the transport cycle, tighter substrate binding in the intermediate states allows the interconversion of conformations by lowering the energy barrier for disruption and formation of these networks, opening and closing the carrier to either side of the membrane in an alternating way. Conversion between cytoplasmic and matrix states might require the simultaneous rotation of three domains around a central translocation pathway, constituting a unique mechanism among transport proteins.     Characterisation of selected speciated organic compounds associated with particulate matter in London

    Total suspended particulate matter (TSP) was collected and analysed at two sites in central and north London during 1995/6 for particulate-associated total organic carbon (TOC), particulate elemental carbon (PEC), 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 23 n-alkanes. The analysis revealed slightly higher concentrations of all of these substances at the central London location and generally low correlations between variables. Overall, PEC was measured as 1-13% of TSP, whilst TOC was measured as 7-45 % of TSP. Seasonal differences in concentrations were identified at both sites, with higher concentrations of combustion related compounds occurring in winter and autumn. The dominant PAH compounds were found to be the higher molecular weight compounds, namely BghiP, BaA and Chrys. n-alkane compound distributions between C-10 and C-34 showed that the highest concentrations of compounds were between C-21 and C-29 Three methods were used to identify specific sources of particulate-associated organic compounds. Ratios of PAHs indicated a dominant petroleum source at both sites, with a higher diesel component at the central London site. Carbon preference index (CPI) values of 1.03 and 1.28 for the central and north London sites, respectively, indicated a stronger anthropogenic (vehicular) influence at the central London location. Using principal component analysis (PCA), key principal components (PCs) were extracted from each data set. These PCs collectively accounted for 76.4 and 78.1% of the total variations within the north and central London data sets, respectively, although differentiation of sources proved difficult because the organic compounds monitored may not be statistically independent
