    Impact of the resignification of the research pedagogical practice and the curriculum of pedagogy degree of higher education institutions in Barranquilla-Colombia

    Este trabajo tiene como objetivo indagar sobre cómo el graduado universitario de pedagogía asume desde el ejercicio de su rol profesional la resignificación de la práctica pedagógica investigativa. Se evalúa el impacto de los graduados del programa de Especialización en Estudios Pedagógicos de la Universidad de la Costa (Colombia) durante el periodo 2014-2017, frente a la resignificación de la práctica pedagógica investigativa. El estudio se fundamentó los preceptos y lineamentos planteados por el Consejo Nacional de Acreditación y el proyecto Tuning. Se trabajó bajo un enfoque cuantitativo con una población de 247 egresados, utilizando la técnica de la observación y el cuestionario de auto reporte como instrumento para la recolección de información. El estudio muestra que el trabajo curricular desarrollado en el programa impacta positivamente el desempeño de los egresados en el mercado laboral. Se evidencia así la pertinencia del programa en su formación profesional y desempeño laboral al ajustarse los planes curriculares acorde a las necesidades nacionales e internacionales.This work has the objective of investigating how the pedagogy university graduate assume, from the exercise of his professional role, the resignification of the pedagogical research practice. The impact of graduates of the Specialization Program in Pedagogical Studies of the University of the Coast during the 2014-2017 period, on the resignification of the research pedagogical practice is evaluated. The study was based on the precepts and guidelines proposed by the National Accreditation Council and the Tuning project. A quantitative approach with a population of 247 graduates was considered, using the observation technique and the self-report questionnaire as the instrument for gathering information. The study shows that the curricular work developed in the program positively impacts the performance of graduates in the labor market. This demonstrates the relevance of the program in their professional training and work performance by adjusting the curricular plans according to national and international needs

    Assessment of agricultural practices by Ethiopian women farmers: existence of gender disparities in access to mycotoxins training

    Ethiopia is one of the countries with the lowest gender-equality performance in sub-Saharan Africa being ranked 121/134 in terms of the magnitude and scope of gender disparities by the United Nations Women’s Organisation. Within the farming communities, women represent 70% of the labour force, but they are neglected from accessing training events run by Ethiopian Universities (e.g. Haramaya University). A survey to assess the existence of gender disparities among Ethiopian women farmers with respect to agricultural labour and mycotoxins knowledge was conducted on three hundred and forty-nine women from the Oromia and Amhara regions. A higher illiteracy rate was found in women compared to men from both Oromia and Amhara regions. Women played a key role in agricultural activities while having limited access to modern technologies compared to their male counterparts. Women were mainly responsible for sorting spoiled crops. Especially in Amhara, these were intended for home consumption, representing a serious health risk for local people. Overall, women from Amhara were more aware than women from Oromia about what mycotoxins are (e.g. aflatoxins), their impact and risk of occurrence in crops. Women in Amhara were also more intended to act towards mycotoxins in the future compared to women from Oromia. Only 0.24% of women have previously attended a training on mycotoxins. The radio seemed to be the most efficient way to deliver training to Ethiopian women farmers from these regions. Mycotoxins trainings were the second option of choice by all women surveyed. Such findings clearly stated the existence of gender inequality in the two Ethiopian regions considered. Empower women’s knowledge about mycotoxins will not only benefit agricultural income and the national economy, but it will also provide women the recognition they equally deserve alongside their male counterparts in future agricultural training programs and interventions.This research was supported by a Global Challenges Research Fund Quality-Research (QR-GCRF) to Cranfield University

    Comparative analysis of extreme ultraviolet solar radiation proxies during minimum activity levels

    Four extreme ultraviolet (EUV) solar radiation proxies (Magnesium II core-to-wing ratio (MgII), Lyman α flux (Fα), 10.7-cm solar radio flux (F10.7), and sunspot number (Rz)) were analyzed during the last four consecutive solar activity minima to investigate how they differ during minimum periods and how well they represent solar EUV radiation. Their variability within each minimum and between minima was compared by considering monthly means. A comparison was also made of their role in filtering the effect of solar activity from the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 layer, foF2, which at mid to low latitudes depends mainly on EUV solar radiation. The last two solar cycles showed unusually low EUV radiation levels according to the four proxies. Regarding the connection between the EUV “true” variation and that of solar proxies, according to the foF2 filtering analysis, MgII and Fα behaved in a more stable and suitable way, whereas Rz and F10.7 could be overestimating EUV levels during the last two minima, implying they would both underestimate the inter-minima difference of EUV when compared with the first two minima

    Discovery of a mid-infrared protostellar outburst of exceptional amplitude

    We report the discovery of a mid-infrared outburst in a young stellar object (YSO) with an amplitude close to 8 mag at λ ≈ 4.6 μm. WISEA J142238.82-611553.7 is one of 23 highly variable Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) sources discovered in a search of infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). It lies within the small IRDC G313.671-0.309 (d ≈ 2.6 kpc), seen by the Herschel/Hi-Gal survey as a compact massive cloud core that may have been measurably warmed by the event. Pre-outburst data from Spitzer in 2004 suggest it is a class I YSO, a view supported by observation of weak 2.12 μm H2 emission in an otherwise featureless red continuum spectrum in 2019 (6 mag below the peak in Ks). Spitzer, WISE, and VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) data show that the outburst began by 2006 and has a duration >13 yr, with a fairly flat peak from 2010 to 2014. The low pre-outburst luminosity implies a low-mass progenitor. The outburst luminosity of a few × 102 L⊙ is consistent with an accretion rate M ≈ 10-4 M⊙yr-1, comparable to a classical FU Orionis event. The 4.6 μm peak in 2010 implies T = 800-1000 K and a disc radial location R ≈ 4.5 au for the emitting region. The colour evolution suggests subsequent progression outwards. The apparent absence of the hotter matter expected in thermal instability or MRI models may be due to complete obscuration of the innermost disc, e.g. by an edge-on disc view. Alternatively, disc fragmentation/infalling fragment models might more naturally explain a mid-infrared peak, though this is not yet clear. © 2020 The Author(s).We thank the referee for reading the paper and encouraging us to provide more detail in several places.     Lymphatic density and metastatic spread in human malignant melanoma. Malignant melanoma (MM), the most common cause of skin cancer deaths, metastasises to regional lymph nodes. In animal models of other cancers, lymphatic growth is associated with metastasis. To assess if lymphatic density (LD) was increased in human MM, and its association with metastasis, we measured LD inside and around archival MM samples (MM, n = 21), and compared them with normal dermis (n = 11), basal cell carcinoma (BCC, n = 6) and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a skin tumour thought to metastasise through a vascular route (MCC, n = 6). Lymphatic capillary density (mm(-2)), as determined by immunohistochemical staining with the lymphatic specific marker LYVE-1, was significantly increased around MM (10.0+/-2.5 mm(-2)) compared with normal dermis (2.4+/-0.9 mm(-2)), BCC (3.0+/-0.9 mm(-2)) and MCC (2.4+/-1.4 mm(-2)) (P<0.0001). There was a small decrease in LD inside MM (1.1+/-0.7 mm(-2)) compared with normal dermis, but a highly significant decrease in BCC (0.14+/-0.13) and MCC (0.12+/-2.4) (P<0.01 Kruskal-Wallis). Astonishingly, LD discriminated between melanomas that subsequently metastasised (12.8+/-1.6 mm(-2)) and those that did not (5.4+/-1.1 mm(-2), P<0.01, Mann-Whitney). Lymphatic invasion by tumour cells was seen mainly in MM that metastasised (70% compared with 12% not metastasising, P<0.05 Fisher's Exact test). The results show that LD was increased around MMs, and that LD and tumour cell invasion of lymphatics may help to predict metastasis. To this end, a prognostic index was calculated using LD, lymphatic invasion and thickness that clearly discriminated metastatic from nonmetastatic tumours

    O objetivo deste texto é realçar o papel do indivíduo na criatividade nas organizações. Esse papel tem sido estranhamente remetido para um plano secundário, à medida que as modernas visões da criatividade a definem, sobretudo, com relação ao contexto em que ocorre. De fato, na perspectiva atual, a criatividade não pode ser entendida sem se considerarem os contextos funcional, relacional e organizacional nos quais está inserido o trabalhador. Tais são as considerações da maior parte dos autores que escreve sobre o tópico, como sejam Amabile (1996), Csikszentmihalyi (1996), ou, mais recentemente, Glăveanu (2010a, 2010b). Essa corrente dominante, com origem no interacionismo psico-social, tem ainda influenciado o desenvolvimento teórico de outros conceitos em psicologia, sociologia, e, na sequência, nas ciências sociais e humanas, e na gestão. Essa supremacia no que concerne a criatividade, tem conduzido os autores a olvidar o papel do indivíduo no processo e no resultado criativos, chegando a retirar-lhe a responsabilidade e o protagonismo pela geração e produção de ideias. Desse modo, no presente texto, recuperam-se os argumentos em favor da centralidade da pessoa na criatividade, defendendo-se que esta tem uma existência isolada de influências externas, e que, como tal, devem relembrar-se as bases individuais da criatividadeThe goal of the current text is to highlight the role of the individual in creativity in organisations. This role has been strangely disregarded in recent years, as modern accounts of creativity have been emphasising the idea that creativity is only defined in context. This main stream argues that creativity is a process that essentially occurs within a functional, relational, and organisational context in which workers are inserted. Key authors defending such a position include the likes of Amabile (1996), Csikszentmihalyi (1996), and, more recently, Glăveanu (2010a, 2010b). This is a vision rooted in the psychosocial interactionist perspective, which has also had a considerable impact in other areas in psychology, sociology, management and other social and human sciences. This supremacy, with regards to creativity, has led many to forget the role of the individual person in the creative process and output, removing their responsibility and protagonism for generating and producing ideas. Hence, the current text intends to bring back to discussion the individual bases of creativity, that people can have an existence isolated from external influences, further defending that the concept can and should be defined out of context, rather than in contextinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    EpIG‐DB: A database of vascular epiphyte assemblages in the Neotropics

    Vascular epiphytes are a diverse and conspicuous component of biodiversity in tropical and subtropical forests. Yet, the patterns and drivers of epiphyte assemblages are poorly studied in comparison with soil‐rooted plants. Current knowledge about diversity patterns of epiphytes mainly stems from local studies or floristic inventories, but this information has not yet been integrated to allow a better understanding of large‐scale distribution patterns. EpIG‐DB, the first database on epiphyte assemblages at the continental scale, resulted from an exhaustive compilation of published and unpublished inventory data from the Neotropics. The current version of EpIG‐DB consists of 463,196 individual epiphytes from 3,005 species, which were collected from a total of 18,148 relevés (host trees and ‘understory’ plots). EpIG‐DB reports the occurrence of ‘true’ epiphytes, hemiepiphytes and nomadic vines, including information on their cover, abundance, frequency and biomass. Most records (97%) correspond to sampled host trees, 76% of them aggregated in forest plots. The data is stored in a TURBOVEG database using the most up‐to‐date checklist of vascular epiphytes. A total of 18 additional fields were created for the standardization of associated data commonly used in epiphyte ecology (e.g. by considering different sampling methods). EpIG‐DB currently covers six major biomes across the whole latitudinal range of epiphytes in the Neotropics but welcomes data globally. This novel database provides, for the first time, unique biodiversity data on epiphytes for the Neotropics and unified guidelines for future collection of epiphyte data. EpIG‐DB will allow exploration of new ways to study the community ecology and biogeography of vascular epiphytes

    Adrenal function recovery after durable oral corticosteroid sparing with benralizumab in the PONENTE study

    Background Oral corticosteroid (OCS) dependence among patients with severe eosinophilic asthma can cause adverse outcomes, including adrenal insufficiency. PONENTE's OCS reduction phase showed that, following benralizumab initiation, 91.5% of patients eliminated corticosteroids or achieved a final dosage ≤5 mg·day-1 (median (range) 0.0 (0.0-40.0) mg). Methods The maintenance phase assessed the durability of corticosteroid reduction and further adrenal function recovery. For ~6 months, patients continued benralizumab 30 mg every 8 weeks without corticosteroids or with the final dosage achieved during the reduction phase. Investigators could prescribe corticosteroids for asthma exacerbations or increase daily dosages for asthma control deteriorations. Outcomes included changes in daily OCS dosage, Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ)-6 and St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), as well as adrenal status, asthma exacerbations and adverse events. Results 598 patients entered PONENTE; 563 (94.1%) completed the reduction phase and entered the maintenance phase. From the end of reduction to the end of maintenance, the median (range) OCS dosage was unchanged (0.0 (0.0-40.0) mg), 3.2% (n=18/563) of patients experienced daily dosage increases, the mean ACQ-6 score decreased from 1.26 to 1.18 and 84.5% (n=476/563) of patients were exacerbation free. The mean SGRQ improvement (-19.65 points) from baseline to the end of maintenance indicated substantial quality-of-life improvements. Of patients entering the maintenance phase with adrenal insufficiency, 32.4% (n=104/321) demonstrated an improvement in adrenal function. Adverse events were consistent with previous reports. Conclusions Most patients successfully maintained maximal OCS reduction while achieving improved asthma control with few exacerbations and maintaining or recovering adrenal function
