Spin Polarizabilities of the Nucleon from Polarized Low Energy Compton Scattering
As guideline for forthcoming experiments, we present predictions from Chiral
Effective Field Theory for polarized cross sections in low energy Compton
scattering for photon energies below 170 MeV, both on the proton and on the
neutron. Special interest is put on the role of the nucleon spin
polarizabilities which can be examined especially well in polarized Compton
scattering. We present a model-independent way to extract their energy
dependence and static values from experiment, interpreting our findings also in
terms of the low energy effective degrees of freedom inside the nucleon: The
polarizabilities are dominated by chiral dynamics from the pion cloud, except
for resonant multipoles, where contributions of the Delta(1232) resonance turn
out to be crucial. We therefore include it as an explicit degree of freedom. We
also identify some experimental settings which are particularly sensitive to
the spin polarizabilities.Comment: 30 pages, 19 figure
Baseline Characteristics of the Vitamin D and Type 2 Diabetes (D2d) Study: A Contemporary Prediabetes Cohort That Will Inform Diabetes Prevention Efforts

OBJECTIVE: To describe baseline characteristics of the Vitamin D and Type 2 Diabetes (D2d) study, the first large U.S. diabetes prevention clinical trial to apply current American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria for prediabetes.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a multicenter (n = 22 sites), randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, primary prevention clinical trial testing effects of oral daily 4,000 IU cholecalciferol (D3) compared with placebo on incident diabetes in U.S. adults at risk for diabetes. Eligible participants were at risk for diabetes, defined as not meeting criteria for diabetes but meeting at least two 2010 ADA glycemic criteria for prediabetes: fasting plasma glucose (FPG) 100-125 mg/dL, 2-h postload glucose (2hPG) after a 75-g oral glucose load 140-199 mg/dL, and/or a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) 5.7-6.4% (39-46 mmol/mol).RESULTS: A total of 2,423 participants (45% of whom were women and 33% nonwhite) were randomized to cholecalciferol or placebo. Mean (SD) age was 59 (9.9) years and BMI 32 (4.5) kg/m2. Thirty-five percent met all three prediabetes criteria, 49% met the FPG/HbA1c criteria only, 9.5% met the 2hPG/FPG criteria only, and 6.3% met the 2hPG/HbA1c criteria only. Black participants had the highest mean HbA1c and lowest FPG concentration compared with white, Asian, and other races (P \u3c 0.01); 2hPG concentration did not differ among racial groups. When compared with previous prediabetes cohorts, the D2d cohort had lower mean 2hPG concentration but similar HbA1c and FPG concentrations.CONCLUSIONS: D2d will establish whether vitamin D supplementation lowers risk of diabetes and will inform about the natural history of prediabetes per contemporary ADA criteria
Identification of the TeV Gamma-ray Source ARGO J2031+4157 with the Cygnus Cocoon
The extended TeV gamma-ray source ARGO J2031+4157 (or MGRO J2031+41) is
positionally consistent with the Cygnus Cocoon discovered by -LAT at GeV
energies in the Cygnus superbubble. Reanalyzing the ARGO-YBJ data collected
from November 2007 to January 2013, the angular extension and energy spectrum
of ARGO J2031+4157 are evaluated. After subtracting the contribution of the
overlapping TeV sources, the ARGO-YBJ excess map is fitted with a
two-dimensional Gaussian function in a square region of , finding a source extension =
1.80.5. The observed differential energy spectrum is
photons cm
s TeV, in the energy range 0.2-10 TeV. The angular extension is
consistent with that of the Cygnus Cocoon as measured by -LAT, and the
spectrum also shows a good connection with the one measured in the 1-100 GeV
energy range. These features suggest to identify ARGO J2031+4157 as the
counterpart of the Cygnus Cocoon at TeV energies. The Cygnus Cocoon, located in
the star-forming region of Cygnus X, is interpreted as a cocoon of freshly
accelerated cosmic rays related to the Cygnus superbubble. The spectral
similarity with Supernova Remnants indicates that the particle acceleration
inside a superbubble is similar to that in a SNR. The spectral measurements
from 1 GeV to 10 TeV allows for the first time to determine the possible
spectrum slope of the underlying particle distribution. A hadronic model is

Developmental subtypes assessed by DNA methylation-iPLEX forecast the natural history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
© 2019 by The American Society of Hematology Alterations in global DNA methylation patterns are a major hallmark of cancer and represent attractive biomarkers for personalized risk stratification. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) risk stratification studies typically focus on time to first treatment (TTFT), time to progression (TTP) after treatment, and overall survival (OS). Whereas TTFT risk stratification remains similar over time, TTP and OS have changed dramatically with the introduction of targeted therapies, such as the Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor ibrutinib. We have shown that genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in CLL are strongly associated with phenotypic differentiation and patient outcomes. Here, we developed a novel assay, termed methylation-iPLEX (Me-iPLEX), for high-throughput quantification of targeted panels of single cytosine guanine dinucleotides from multiple independent loci. Me-iPLEX was used to classify CLL samples into 1 of 3 known epigenetic subtypes (epitypes). We examined the impact of epitype in 1286 CLL patients from 4 independent cohorts representing a comprehensive view of CLL disease course and therapies. We found that epitype significantly predicted TTFT and OS among newly diagnosed CLL patients. Additionally, epitype predicted TTP and OS with 2 common CLL therapies: chemoimmunotherapy and ibrutinib. Epitype retained significance after stratifying by biologically related biomarkers, immunoglobulin heavy chain mutational status, and ZAP70 expression, as well as other common prognostic markers. Furthermore, among several biological traits enriched between epitypes, we found highly biased immunogenetic features, including IGLV3-21 usage in the poorly characterized intermediate-programmed CLL epitype. In summary, Me-iPLEX is an elegant method to assess epigenetic signatures, including robust classification of CLL epitypes that independently stratify patient risk at diagnosis and time of treatment
Strange particle production in proton-proton collisions at TeV with ALICE at the LHC
The production of mesons containing strange quarks (K, ) and both
singly and doubly strange baryons (, Anti-, and
+Anti-) are measured at central rapidity in pp collisions at
= 0.9 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are
obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009.
Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at central
rapidities for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report
yields () of 0.184 0.002 stat. 0.006 syst. for K and
0.021 0.004 stat. 0.003 syst. for . For baryons, we find
= 0.048 0.001 stat. 0.004 syst. for , 0.047
0.002 stat. 0.005 syst. for Anti- and 0.0101 0.0020 stat.
0.0009 syst. for +Anti-. The results are also compared with
predictions for identified particle spectra from QCD-inspired models and
provide a baseline for comparisons with both future pp measurements at higher

The Work of the Course: validity and reliability in assessing English Literature
© 2017 National Association for the Teaching of English This article reflects on the values and practices of a revolutionary UK A level (senior secondary) course that achieved a high degree of validity and reliability in assessing the study of English literature. John Hodgson and Bill Greenwell were involved in its teaching and assessment from an early stage, and Greenwell's comments on an early draft of the article have been incorporated. The practice of literary response enshrined in the course was based on a striking application of “personal response” to literature, gave students opportunities to show capability in studying and writing a range of literary styles and genres, and engaged teachers regionally and nationally in a developed professional community of practice. It remains a touchstone of quality as well as of innovation in English curriculum and assessment
Two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV
The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb
collisions at TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is
presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the
longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The
pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than

Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in and GeV/ are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor . The result indicates only weak medium effects ( 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions,
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at -7GeV/ and increases
significantly at larger . The measured suppression of high- particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at
