Wigner-Moyal description of free variable mass Klein-Gordon fields
A system of coupled kinetic transport equations for the Wigner distributions
of a free variable mass Klein-Gordon field is derived. This set of equations is
formally equivalent to the full wave equation for electromagnetic waves in
nonlinear dispersive media, thus allowing for the description of broadband
radiation-matter interactions and the associated instabilities. The standard
results for the classical wave action are recovered in the short wavelength

Modelling and Analysis of Vibrations in a UAV Helicopter with a Vision System
The analysis of the nature and damping of unwanted vibrations on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) helicopters are important tasks when images from on‐board vision systems are to be obtained. In this article, the authors model a UAV system, generate a range of vibrations originating in the main rotor and design a control methodology in order to damp these vibrations. The UAV is modelled using VehicleSim, the vibrations that appear on the fuselage are analysed to study their effects on the on‐board vision system by using Simmechanics software. Following this, the authors present a control method based on an Adaptive Neuro‐Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to achieve satisfactory damping results over the vision system on board
Low-resistance Ni-based Schottky diodes on freestanding n-GaN
Schottky diodes formed on a low doped (5 x 10(16) cm(-3)) n-type GaN epilayer grown on a n(+) freestanding GaN substrate were studied. The temperature dependent electrical characteristics of Ni contacts on the as-grown material are compared with an aqueous, potassium hydroxide (KOH) treated surface. In both cases the diodes are dominated by thermionic emission in forward bias, with low idealities (1.04 at room temperature) which decrease with increasing temperature, reaching 1.03 at 413 K. The Schottky barrier height is 0.79 +/- 0.05 eV for the as-grown surface compared with 0.85 +/- 0.05 eV for the KOH treated surface at room temperature. This is consistent with an inhomogeneous barrier distribution. The specific on-state resistance of the diodes is 0.57 m Omega cm(2) The KOH treatment reduces the room temperature reverse leakage current density at -30 V to 1 x 10(-5) A cm(-2) compared to 6 x 10(-2) A cm(-2) for the as-grown samples. Nonlinear vertical oscillations of a particle in a sheath of a rf discharge
A new simple method to measure the spatial distribution of the electric field
in the plasma sheath is proposed. The method is based on the experimental
investigation of vertical oscillations of a single particle in the sheath of a
low-pressure radio-frequency discharge. It is shown that the oscillations
become strongly nonlinear and secondary harmonics are generated as the
amplitude increases. The theory of anharmonic oscillations provides a good
qualitative description of the data and gives estimates for the first two
anharmonic terms in an expansion of the sheath potential around the particle

LOFAR discovery of a 700-kpc remnant radio galaxy at low redshift
Remnant radio galaxies represent the final dying phase of radio galaxy
evolution, in which the jets are no longer active. Due to their rarity in flux
limited samples and the difficulty of identification, this dying phase remains
poorly understood and the luminosity evolution largely unconstrained. Here we
present the discovery and detailed analysis of a large (700 kpc) remnant radio
galaxy with a low surface brightness that has been identified in LOFAR images
at 150 MHz. By combining LOFAR data with new follow-up Westerbork observations
and archival data at higher frequencies, we investigated the source morphology
and spectral properties from 116 to 4850 MHz. By modelling the radio spectrum
we probed characteristic timescales of the radio activity. The source has a
relatively smooth, diffuse, amorphous appearance together with a very weak
central compact core which is associated with the host galaxy located at
z=0.051. From our ageing and morphological analysis it is clear that the
nuclear engine is currently switched off or, at most, active at a very low
power state. The host galaxy is currently interacting with another galaxy
located at a projected separation of 15 kpc and a radial velocity offset of 300
km/s. This interaction may have played a role in the triggering and/or shut
down of the radio jets. The spectral shape of this remnant radio galaxy differs
from the majority of the previously identified remnant sources, which show
steep or curved spectra at low to intermediate frequencies. In light of this
finding and in preparation for new-generation deep low-frequency surveys, we
discuss the selection criteria to be used to select representative samples of

The frontiers of participatory public engagement
Currently missing from critical literature on public engagement with academic research is a public-centric analysis of the wider contemporary context of developments in the field of public engagement and participation. Drawing on three differently useful strands of the existing theoretical literature on the public, this article compares a diverse sample of 100 participatory public engagement initiatives in order to first, analyse a selection of the myriad ways that the public is being constituted and supported across this contemporary field and second, identify what socio-cultural researchers might learn from these developments. Emerging from this research is a preliminary map of the field of public engagement and participation. This map highlights relationships and divergences that exist among diverse forms of practice and brings into clearer view a set of tensions between different contemporary approaches to public engagement and participation. Two ‘frontiers’ of participatory public engagement that socio-cultural researchers should attend are also identified. At the first, scholars need to be critical regarding the particular versions of the public that their preferred approach to engagement and participation supports and concerning how their specific identifications with the public relate to those being addressed across the wider field. At the second frontier, researchers need to consider the possibilities for political intervention that public engagement and participation practice could open out, both in the settings they are already working and also in the much broader, rapidly developing and increasingly complicated contemporary field of public engagement and participation that this article explores
A 20 GHz bright sample for {\delta} > +72{\deg}: I. Catalogue
During 2010-2011, the Medicina 32-m dish hosted the 7-feed 18-26.5 GHz
receiver built for the Sardinia Radio Telescope, with the goal to perform its
commissioning. This opportunity was exploited to carry out a pilot survey at 20
GHz over the area for {\delta} > + 72.3{\deg}. This paper describes all the
phases of the observations, as they were performed using new hardware and
software facilities. The map-making and source extraction procedures are
illustrated. A customised data reduction tool was used during the follow-up
phase, which produced a list of 73 confirmed sources down to a flux density of
115 mJy. The resulting catalogue, here presented, is complete above 200 mJy.
Source counts are in agreement with those provided by the AT20G survey. This
pilot activity paves the way to a larger project, the K-band Northern Wide
Survey (KNoWS), whose final aim is to survey the whole Northern Hemisphere down
to a flux limit of 50 mJy (5{\sigma}).Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Accepted by MNRA
Structure and Assembly of TP901-1 Virion Unveiled by Mutagenesis
International audienceBacteriophages of the Siphoviridae family represent the most abundant viral morphology in the biosphere, yet many molecular aspects of their virion structure, assembly and associated functions remain to be unveiled. In this study, we present a comprehensive mutational and molecular analysis of the temperate Lactococcus lactis-infecting phage TP901-1. Fourteen mutations located within the structural module of TP901-1 were created; twelve mutations were designed to prevent full length translation of putative proteins by nonsense mutations, while two additional mutations caused aberrant protein production. Electron microscopy and Western blot analysis of mutant virion preparations, as well as in vitro assembly of phage mutant combinations, revealed the essential nature of many of the corresponding gene products and provided information on their biological function(s).
