Heritabilities and genetic trends for reproductive traits in a population of Romosinuano cattle in Colombia
ABSTRACT
Objective. The aim of this study was to estimate heritabilities and genetic trends for reproductive traits in a beef cattle population Romosinuano. Material and methods. Age at first calving (AFC), first calving interval (FCI), and second calving interval (SCI) were evaluated from a database generated from 1951 to 2011 by Research Center Turipana. Unicaracter animal model was used, which included fixed of contemporary group (year-season), random direct genetic additives effects and residual. Estimates of variance components and genetic parameters were obtained through Restricted Maximum Likelihood procedure, using AIREMLF90 program. Genetic trends were calculated as a linear regression of weighted averages of breeding values over the years, using the REG procedure of Statistical Analysis System. Results. The indices of heritability for additive genetic effects were 0.04 ± 0.05 for AFC, 0.06 ± 0.06 for FCI, and 0.09 ± 0.06 for SCI. Conclusions. Low heritabilities indicating that should improve nutritional and management conditions in the herd, so that they can better express the traits evaluated. The estimated genetic trends were near zero, which shows that the objective of the CI Turipaná regarding this population has complied fully preserving the genetic variability of the breed Romosinuano.
Transcriptome and gene expression analysis of three developmental stages of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei
Coffee production is a global industry valued at approximately 173 billion US dollars. One of the main challenges facing coffee production is the management of the coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei, which is considered the primary arthropod pest of coffee worldwide. Current control strategies are inefficient for CBB management. Although biotechnological alternatives, including RNA interference (RNAi), have been proposed in recent years to control insect pests, characterizing the genetics of the target pest is essential for the successful application of these emerging technologies. In this study, we employed RNA-seq to obtain the transcriptome of three developmental stages of the CBB (larva, female and male) to increase our understanding of the CBB life cycle in relation to molecular features. The CBB transcriptome was sequenced using Illumina Hiseq and assembled de novo. Differential gene expression analysis was performed across the developmental stages. The final assembly produced 29,434 unigenes, of which 4,664 transcripts were differentially expressed. Genes linked to crucial physiological functions, such as digestion and detoxification, were determined to be tightly regulated between the reproductive and nonreproductive stages of CBB. The data obtained in this study help to elucidate the critical roles that several genes play as regulatory elements in CBB development

Global validation of the WSES Sepsis Severity Score for patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections : a prospective multicentre study (WISS Study)
Background: To validate a new practical Sepsis Severity Score for patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) including the clinical conditions at the admission (severe sepsis/septic shock), the origin of the cIAIs, the delay in source control, the setting of acquisition and any risk factors such as age and immunosuppression. Methods: The WISS study (WSES cIAIs Score Study) is a multicenter observational study underwent in 132 medical institutions worldwide during a four-month study period (October 2014-February 2015). Four thousand five hundred thirty-three patients with a mean age of 51.2 years (range 18-99) were enrolled in the WISS study. Results: Univariate analysis has shown that all factors that were previously included in the WSES Sepsis Severity Score were highly statistically significant between those who died and those who survived (p <0.0001). The multivariate logistic regression model was highly significant (p <0.0001, R-2 = 0.54) and showed that all these factors were independent in predicting mortality of sepsis. Receiver Operator Curve has shown that the WSES Severity Sepsis Score had an excellent prediction for mortality. A score above 5.5 was the best predictor of mortality having a sensitivity of 89.2 %, a specificity of 83.5 % and a positive likelihood ratio of 5.4. Conclusions: WSES Sepsis Severity Score for patients with complicated Intra-abdominal infections can be used on global level. It has shown high sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratio that may help us in making clinical decisions.Peer reviewe
ANALYTICAL SUMMARYAttacks Detection systems evaluate traffic attacks or intrusions from a default signature sets to identify potential abnormal behaviors, however, these techniques are insufficient if the sequence ofevents does not correspond to any of the previously recognized patterns. The use of honeynet aims to identify the taxonomy of attackers. This papers presents an approach to attack detection modelusing multi-agent systems incorporating honeynet mode mergers and alert correlation on ontologies to identify abnormal behavior leading from inference and reasoning processes.KEYWORDS: Ontologies, Fusion Alerts, Correlation Attacks, Multiagent Systems, Intelligent Intrusion Detection
Colombia has seven Criollo breed s of cattle adapted to tropical conditions, with a total number of pure breds of about 18.000, and about 50.000 cattle if Criollo crossbreds are also considered. The 1986 Livestock Development Project suggested increasing their numbers and developing animal improvement programs at a farm level. These goals can be achieved through the development of a national genetic evaluation program involving all Criollo breeds and their cross breds. The basic population and data structures that would allow the realization of a national genetic evaluation are presented and discussed in terms of the Colombian situation. Current unibreed and multibreed linear methodology, and computational procedures, are discussed, and computer software programs are suggested. A general strategy to develop a National Genetic Evaluation Program is outlined, and specific points discussed in further detail from a Colombian perspective. The implementation of a large national genetic evaluation program will not only benefit the Criollo breeds and their crossbreds, but it can serve as a model for the genetic evaluation of all cattle breed s and their cross breds in Colombia.
