Reconfiguração ótima de sistemas de distribuição para minimização de perdas de energia
This paper presents an algorithm for reconfiguration of Electrical Distribution Systems in order to minimize energy losses considering different load levels. This problem is considered as mixed integer non linear programming, in which a continuous function is used to handle the discrete variables. As consequence, the proposed model is solved using a step by step approach where the primal-dual interior point technique is solved at each step. The Lagrange multiplies are used to evaluate the sensitivity index for the reconfiguration process. The developed algorithm is tested in three systems of the literature.Este artigo apresenta um algoritmo para a reconfiguração ótima de Sistemas de Distribuição de Energia Elétrica (SDE), com o objetivo de minimizar a perda total de energia considerando diferentes níveis de carregamento. Trata-se de um problema de programação não linear inteira mista onde a variável discreta é modelada como uma função contínua. Como conseqüência, o problema proposto é resolvido através de um algoritmo passo a passo, onde em cada passo é utilizado o Método Primal-Dual de Pontos Interiores. Os multiplicadores de Lagrange são utilizados para compor o índice de sensibilidade no processo de reconfiguração. O algoritmo proposto é testado em três sistemas encontrados na literatura
Programming of thermoelectric generation systems based on a heuristic composition of ant colonies
a b s t r a c t Studies related to biologically inspired optimization techniques, which are used for daily operational scheduling of thermoelectric generation systems, indicate that combinations of biologically inspired computation methods together with other optimization techniques have an important role to play in obtaining the best solutions in the shortest amount of processing time. Following this line of research, this article uses a methodology based on optimization by an ant colony to minimize the daily scheduling cost of thermoelectric units. The proposed model uses a Sensitivity Matrix (SM) based on the information provided by the Lagrange multipliers to improve the biologically inspired search process. Thus, a percentage of the individuals in the colony use this information in the evolutionary process of the colony. The results achieved through the simulations indicate that the use of the SM results in quality solutions with a reduced number of individuals
Evapotranspiração e coeficientes de cultivo da beterraba orgânica sob cobertura morta de leguminosa e gramínea.
As práticas agrícolas que maximizam a produtividade e o uso da água são de vital importância para a agricultura. Assim, foram testados três tipos de manejo do solo com objetivo de determinar a evapotranspiração (ETc) e os coeficientes de cultivo (kc) da beterraba. Os tipos de manejo foram a utilização de coberturas mortas vegetais, denominadas capim cameroon (Pennisetum purpureum), gliricídia (Gliricidia sepium) e solo sem cobertura morta em área experimental do SIPA (Sistema Integrado de Produção Orgânica) localizado em Seropédica, Brasil. A lâmina de irrigação foi estimada com base no balanço de água no solo, cujo monitoramento foi realizado com a técnica da TDR. As ETc acumuladas para a cultura da beterraba foram 59,41; 55,31 e 119,62 mm, respectivamente, para capim cameroon, gliricídia e solo sem cobertura morta. A evapotranspiração de referência (ETo) foi obtida por meio do modelo de Penamn-Monteith. Os valores médios de kc obtidos para as fases inicial, média e final de desenvolvimento foram de 0,39; 0,42 e 1,02; 0,79; 0,76 e 1,18; e 0,56; 0,61 e 0,84, respectivamente, para capim cameroon, gliricídia e solo sem cobertura morta. O uso da cobertura do solo com gramínea ou leguminosa minimizou de forma expressiva a demanda hídrica da cultura da beterraba (Beta vulgaris)
Macrophage skewing by Phd2 haplodeficiency prevents ischemia by inducing arteriogenesis

The IKKβ floxed mice are a generous gift of Dr. M. Karin (UCSD, La Jolla, CA). The hydroxylase-deficient PHD2 construct was given by Dr. P. Ratcliffe (Oxford, UK).PHD2 serves as an oxygen sensor that rescues blood supply by regulating vessel formation and shape in case of oxygen shortage. However, it is unknown whether PHD2 can influence arteriogenesis. Here we studied the role of PHD2 in collateral artery growth by using hindlimb ischaemia as a model, a process that compensates for the lack of blood flow in case of major arterial occlusion. We show that Phd2 (also known as Egln1) haplodeficient (Phd2(+/-)) mice displayed preformed collateral arteries that preserved limb perfusion and prevented tissue necrosis in ischaemia. Improved arteriogenesis in Phd2(+/-) mice was due to an expansion of tissue-resident, M2-like macrophages and their increased release of arteriogenic factors, leading to enhanced smooth muscle cell (SMC) recruitment and growth. Both chronic and acute deletion of one Phd2 allele in macrophages was sufficient to skew their polarization towards a pro-arteriogenic phenotype. Mechanistically, collateral vessel preconditioning relied on the activation of canonical NF-κB pathway in Phd2(+/-) macrophages. These results unravel how PHD2 regulates arteriogenesis and artery homeostasis by controlling a specific differentiation state in macrophages and suggest new treatment options for ischaemic disorders.This work was supported by grants

Rarity of monodominance in hyperdiverse Amazonian forests.
Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such "monodominant" forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors

Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least
three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data
sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns
collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector
at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model
backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are
presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard
model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new
particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets
