    HST spectra reveal accretion in MY Lupi

    The mass accretion rate is a crucial parameter for the study of the evolution of accretion discs around young low-mass stellar and substellar objects (YSOs). We revisit the case of MYLup, an object where VLT/X-Shooter data suggested a negligible mass accretion rate, and show it to be accreting on a level similar to other ClassII YSOs in Lupus based on HST observations. In our HST-COS and -STIS spectra, we find many emission lines, as well as substantial FUV continuum excess emission, which can be ascribed to active accretion. The total luminosity of the CIV 1549A doublet is 4.1×10−4\times10^{-4} Lsun. Using scalings between accretion luminosity, Lacc, and CIV luminosity from the literature, we derive Lacc ∌\sim2×10−1\times10^{-1} Lsun, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit estimated from the X-Shooter observations. We discuss possible reasons for the X-Shooter-HST discrepancy, the most plausible being that the low contrast between the continuum excess emission and the photospheric+chromospheric emission at optical wavelengths in MYLup hampered detection of excess emission. The luminosity of the FUV continuum and CIV lines, strong H2_{2} fluorescence, and a "1600 A Bump" place MYLup in the class of accreting objects with gas-rich discs. So far, MYLup is the only peculiar case in which a significant difference between the HST and X-Shooter Macc estimates exists that is not ascribable to variability. The mass accretion rate inferred from the revisited Lacc estimate is Macc ∌\sim 1( −0.5+1.5^{+1.5}_{-0.5} )×10−8\times10^{-8} Msun/yr. This value is consistent with the typical value derived for accreting YSOs of similar mass in Lupus and points to less clearing of the inner disc than indicated by near- and mid-infrared observations. This is confirmed by ALMA data, which show that the gaps and rings seen in the sub-millimetre are relatively shallow.Comment: 13 pager, 8 figures, two table

    Seeing Through the Ring: Near-infrared Photometry of V582 Mon (KH 15D)

    We examine the light and color evolution of the T Tauri binary KH 15D through photometry obtained at wavelengths between 0.55 and 8.0 ÎŒm. The data were collected with A Novel Dual Imaging CAMera (ANDICAM) on the 1.3 m SMARTS telescope at Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory and with InfraRed Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We show that the system's circumbinary ring, which acts as a screen that covers and uncovers different portions of the binary orbit as the ring precesses, has reached an orientation where the brighter component (star B) fully or nearly fully emerges during each orbital cycle. The fainter component (star A) remains fully occulted by the screen at all phases. The leading and trailing edges of the screen move across the sky at the same rate of ~15 m s^(−1), consistent with expectation for a ring with a radius and width of ~4 au and a precession period of ~6500 years. Light and color variations continue to indicate that the screen is sharp edged and opaque at VRIJH wavelengths. However, we find an increasing transparency of the ring edge at 2.2, 3.6, and 4.5 ÎŒm. Reddening seen at the beginning of the eclipse that occurred during the CSI 2264 campaign particularly suggests selective extinction by a population of large dust grains. Meanwhile, the gradual bluing observed while star B is setting is indicative of forward scattering effects at the edge of the ring. The spectral energy distribution of the system at its bright phase shows no evidence of infrared excess emission that can be attributed to radiation from the ring or other dust component out to 8 ÎŒm

    A UV-to-NIR Study of Molecular Gas in the Dust Cavity around RY Lupi

    We present a study of molecular gas in the inner disk (r ∌ 0.4± 0.1 au; {r(narrow,H₂)} ∌ 3± 2 au). The 4.7 ÎŒm ÂčÂČCO emission lines are also well fit by two-component profiles ( {{r}broad,CO} =0.4± 0.1 au; {{r}narrow,CO} =15± 2 au). We combine these results with 10 ÎŒm observations to form a picture of gapped structure within the mm-imaged dust cavity, providing the first such overview of the inner regions of a young disk.     Elective Cancer Surgery in COVID-19-Free Surgical Pathways During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic: An International, Multicenter, Comparative Cohort Study.

    PURPOSE: As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19-free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19-free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS: Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19-free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19-free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19-free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score-matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19-free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION: Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19-free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks

    PENELLOPE: The ESO data legacy program to complement the Hubble UV Legacy Library of Young Stars (ULLYSES)

    The evolution of young stars and disks is driven by the interplay of several processes, notably the accretion and ejection of material. These processes, critical to correctly describe the conditions of planet formation, are best probed spectroscopically. Between 2020 and 2022, about 500orbits of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are being devoted in to the ULLYSES public survey of about 70 low-mass (M⋆ ≀ 2 M⊙) young (age < 10 Myr) stars at UV wavelengths. Here, we present the PENELLOPE Large Program carried out with the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the aim of acquiring, contemporaneously to the HST, optical ESPRESSO/UVES high-resolution spectra for the purpose of investigating the kinematics of the emitting gas, along with UV-to-NIR X-shooter medium-resolution flux-calibrated spectra to provide the fundamental parameters that HST data alone cannot provide, such as extinction and stellar properties. The data obtained by PENELLOPE have no proprietary time and the fully reduced spectra are being made available to the whole community. Here, we describe the data and the first scientific analysis of the accretion properties for the sample of 13 targets located in the Orion OB1 association and in the σ-Orionis cluster, observed in November–December 2020. We find that the accretion rates are in line with those observed previously in similarly young star-forming regions, with a variability on a timescale of days (â‰Č3). The comparison of the fits to the continuum excess emission obtained with a slab model on the X-shooter spectra and the HST/STIS spectra shows a shortcoming in the X-shooter estimates of â‰Č10%, which is well within the assumed uncertainty. Its origin can be either due to an erroneous UV extinction curve or to the simplicity of the modeling and, thus, this question will form the basis of the investigation undertaken over the course of the PENELLOPE program. The combined ULLYSES and PENELLOPE data will be key in attaining a better understanding of the accretion and ejection mechanisms in young stars

    Prevertebral Soft Tissue Measurements in Thyroid Enlargement: The Value of Lateral Neck Radiographs

    Measurement of prevertebral soft tissue is commonly used to assess prevertebral abnormalities, such as retropharyngeal abscess or injury to the cervical spine. In the presence of goitres, the widened prevertebral tissue seen on plain lateral neck radiograph may be diagnostic of an enlarged tubercle of Zuckerkandl (ZT), which may be responsible for most pressure symptoms. The aim of this study was to substantiate the value of plain lateral neck radiographs in preoperative demonstration of enlarged ZT. Methods: Fifty patients who underwent thyroid surgery between June and December 2000 were included in this prospective, non-randomized study. Measurements of prevertebral soft tissue were taken at C4, C5 and C6, and were correlated with the weight of goitres and the grades of changes in the ZTs. Results: Of patients, 44% had large goitres weighing more than 100 g; 52% of ZTs were classified as grade 3. Of the large ZTs, 82% were associated with large goitres and, of these, 88% were associated with significant pressure symptoms. Prevertebral measurements were abnormal, particularly at C4, C5 and C6. The most promising predictor of the presence of an enlarged ZT is the measurement taken at C4 (p < 0.05). The ratio of the prevertebral space to the vertebral body (PVS/VB) in grade 3 ZT was also increased at C4, C5 and C6. However, these ratios were not statistically significant. A measurement of prevertebral soft tissue, particularly at C4, greater than 16.5 mm correlates 100% with an enlarged grade 3 ZT. Conclusions: The results of this study support the concept that the plain radiograph shows significant widening of the lateral neck in the presence of an enlarged ZT. Plain lateral radiography is a simple procedure that could provide valuable information for preoperative assessment of an enlarged ZT, particularly in patients with large goitres who have significant pressure symptoms

    Structural and magnetic properties of cobalt doped ZnO thin films deposited by cost effective nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique

    In this work, we report the structural, optical and magnetic properties of Co doped ZnO thin films fabricated by nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. Five different thin films were fabricated with various doping concentration of cobalt. These thin films posses hexagonal wurtzite structure with polycrystalline nature and strongly oriented along with (002) and (101) direction. From x-ray diffraction pattern, average crystallite sizes were calculated and are found to be decreases with Co doping concentration. The dislocation density and microstrain values of the coated films increased gradually with doping concentration. The SEM/AFM studies reveal the change from spherical shape to petal shaped grains and it is also found that the size of grains and roughness decreases with Co increasing doping concentration. The lowering of the optical band gap energy from ∌ 3.24 eV to 3.05 eV shows doping by Co in ZnO gives rise to band gap bowing in ZnO:Co thin films. The M-H curve confirms the god ferromagnetism in Co doped ZnO thin films

    Probing UV-sensitive pathways for CN and HCN formation in protoplanetary disks with the Hubble Space Telescope

    The UV radiation field is a critical regulator of gas-phase chemistry in surface layers of disks around young stars. In an effort to understand the relationship between photocatalyzing UV radiation fields and gas emission observed at infrared and submillimeter wavelengths, we present an analysis of new and archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Spitzer, ALMA, IRAM, and SMA data for five targets in the Lupus cloud complex and 14 systems in Taurus-Auriga. The HST spectra were used to measure Lyα and far-UV (FUV) continuum fluxes reaching the disk surface, which are responsible for dissociating relevant molecular species (e.g., HCN, N2). Semi-forbidden C ii] λ2325 and UV-fluorescent N2 emission were also measured to constrain inner disk populations of C+ and vibrationally excited N2. We find a significant positive correlation between 14 Όm HCN emission and fluxes from the FUV continuum and C ii] λ2325, consistent with model predictions requiring N2 photodissociation and carbon ionization to trigger the main CN/HCN formation pathways. We also report significant negative correlations between submillimeter CN emission and both C ii] and FUV continuum fluxes, implying that CN is also more readily dissociated in disks with stronger FUV irradiation. No clear relationships are detected between either CN or HCN and Lyα or UV- N2 emission. This is attributed to the spatial stratification of the various molecular species, which span several vertical layers and radii across the inner and outer disk. We expect that future observations with the James Webb Space Telescope will build on this work by enabling more sensitive IR surveys than were possible with Spitzer
