    Exposing Attention-Decision-Learning Cycles in Engineering Project Teams through Collaborative Design Experiments

    Engineering project outcomes are driven by a dynamic mix of the social physics of teams, the unique complexities of the engineering challenge at hand, and stakeholder pressures in context. Various related research has demonstrated formal experiments for tightly controlled problems and in small teams, including work in organizational psychology, computational organization theory, design thinking, and coordination science. We realize there is room for testing these foundational concepts in quasi-controlled environments with distributed teams challenged by problem, solution, and organization complexity common today. This paper presents a quasi-experiment to study how engineers proceed through attention, decision, and learning cycles in the design of a System of Systems. The experiment utilized an ensemble of an agent-based model, a decision-support interface, and a variety of sensors to record behavior and activity. Four pilots were conducted for a maritime industry challenge with experienced industry experts, followed by a primary experiment for data collection. Though this work is preliminary, the experimental approach detects (for this case) how designers focused on different variables (attention), manipulated variables to accomplish desired outcomes (decisions), and explored the system performance trade space variously over time to reveal false assumptions and uncover better decisions (learning). Lessons learned from this quasi-experiment are guiding this research team to prepare scalable and reproducible engineering teamwork experiments that include sensors of events over time in the problem, solution, and socials spaces of engineering projects

    Behavior change interventions: the potential of ontologies for advancing science and practice

    A central goal of behavioral medicine is the creation of evidence-based interventions for promoting behavior change. Scientific knowledge about behavior change could be more effectively accumulated using "ontologies." In information science, an ontology is a systematic method for articulating a "controlled vocabulary" of agreed-upon terms and their inter-relationships. It involves three core elements: (1) a controlled vocabulary specifying and defining existing classes; (2) specification of the inter-relationships between classes; and (3) codification in a computer-readable format to enable knowledge generation, organization, reuse, integration, and analysis. This paper introduces ontologies, provides a review of current efforts to create ontologies related to behavior change interventions and suggests future work. This paper was written by behavioral medicine and information science experts and was developed in partnership between the Society of Behavioral Medicine's Technology Special Interest Group (SIG) and the Theories and Techniques of Behavior Change Interventions SIG. In recent years significant progress has been made in the foundational work needed to develop ontologies of behavior change. Ontologies of behavior change could facilitate a transformation of behavioral science from a field in which data from different experiments are siloed into one in which data across experiments could be compared and/or integrated. This could facilitate new approaches to hypothesis generation and knowledge discovery in behavioral science

    Effect of Soybean Oil Fatty Acid Composition and Selenium Application on Biodiesel Properties

    Biodiesel consisting principally of monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) has been reported to have the optimal balance between cold flow properties and oxidative stability, therefore producing a superior fuel. In addition, treating biodiesel with antioxidants such as selenium (Se) also increases oxidative stability. Fuel properties including acid value (AV), cloud point (CP), iodine value (IV), pour point (PP), peroxide value (PV), induction period (IP), onset temperature (OT), and kinematic viscosity (KV) were used to evaluate a newly developed Roundup Ready® soybean recombinant inbred line (RIL) and a commercial cultivar. The RIL had a fatty acid profile with elevated levels of monounsaturated FAME. TN07-93RR was determined as the more desirable line for production of biodiesel, based on its fatty acid composition and subsequent fuel properties. The commercial cultivar AG3906 contained the highest abundance of polyunsaturated FAME and exhibited comparatively high IV and low oxidative stability. AG3906 was therefore not acceptable under the European biodiesel standard, EN 14214. However, TN07-93RR and AG3906 both were considered satisfactory according to the American biodiesel standard, ASTM D6751. Foliar treatment of soybean plants with varying amounts of Se had no effect on subsequent biodiesel oxidative stabilities

    FAK and talin: Who is taking whom to the integrin engagement party?

    In this issue, Lawson et al. provide new insight into the relationship between FAK and talin during assembly of integrin adhesions on fibronectin. They show that FAK is upstream of talin, and that talin is not required for FAK recruitment or for integrin activation at nascent adhesions. However, FAK-talin binding is required for adhesion turnover and cell motility. The findings question the view that talin is always upstream of focal adhesion protein recruitment to clustered integrin sites

    Reconceptualising adaptation to climate change as part of pathways of change and response

    The need to adapt to climate change is now widely recognised as evidence of its impacts on social and natural systems grows and greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated. Yet efforts to adapt to climate change, as reported in the literature over the last decade and in selected case studies, have not led to substantial rates of implementation of adaptation actions despite substantial investments in adaptation science. Moreover, implemented actions have been mostly incremental and focused on proximate causes; there are far fewer reports of more systemic or transformative actions. We found that the nature and effectiveness of responses was strongly influenced by framing. Recent decision-oriented approaches that aim to overcome this situation are framed within a "pathways" metaphor to emphasise the need for robust decision making within adaptive processes in the face of uncertainty and inter-temporal complexity. However, to date, such "adaptation pathways" approaches have mostly focused on contexts with clearly identified decision-makers and unambiguous goals; as a result, they generally assume prevailing governance regimes are conducive for adaptation and hence constrain responses to proximate causes of vulnerability. In this paper, we explore a broader conceptualisation of "adaptation pathways" that draws on 'pathways thinking' in the sustainable development domain to consider the implications of path dependency, interactions between adaptation plans, vested interests and global change, and situations where values, interests, or institutions constrain societal responses to change. This re-conceptualisation of adaptation pathways aims to inform decision makers about integrating incremental actions on proximate causes with the transformative aspects of societal change. Case studies illustrate what this might entail. The paper ends with a call for further exploration of theory, methods and procedures to operationalise this broader conceptualisation of adaptation

    Improving response rates using a monetary incentive for patient completion of questionnaires: an observational study

    Background: Poor response rates to postal questionnaires can introduce bias and reduce the statistical power of a study. To improve response rates in our trial in primary care we tested the effect of introducing an unconditional direct payment of 5 pound for the completion of postal questionnaires. Methods: We recruited patients in general practice with knee problems from sites across the United Kingdom. An evidence-based strategy was used to follow-up patients at twelve months with postal questionnaires. This included an unconditional direct payment of 5 pound to patients for the completion and return of questionnaires. The first 105 patients did not receive the 5 pound incentive, but the subsequent 442 patients did. We used logistic regression to analyse the effect of introducing a monetary incentive to increase the response to postal questionnaires. Results: The response rate following reminders for the historical controls was 78.1% ( 82 of 105) compared with 88.0% ( 389 of 442) for those patients who received the 5 pound payment (diff = 9.9%, 95% CI 2.3% to 19.1%). Direct payments significantly increased the odds of response ( adjusted odds ratio = 2.2, 95% CI 1.2 to 4.0, P = 0.009) with only 12 of 442 patients declining the payment. The incentive did not save costs to the trial - the extra cost per additional respondent was almost 50 pound. Conclusion: The direct payment of 5 pound significantly increased the completion of postal questionnaires at negligible increase in cost for an adequately powered study

    Off-target effects of tribendimidine, tribendimidine plus ivermectin, tribendimidine plus oxantel-pamoate, and albendazole plus oxantel-pamoate on the human gut microbiota

    Soil-transmitted helminths infect 1.5 billion people worldwide. Treatment with anthelminthics is the key intervention but interactions between anthelminthic agents and the gut microbiota have not yet been studied. In this study, the effects of four anthelminthic drugs and combinations (tribendimidine, tribendimidine plus ivermectin, tribendimidine plus oxantel-pamoate, and albendazole plus oxantel-pamoate) on the gut microbiota were assessed. From each hookworm infected adolescent, one stool sample was collected prior to treatment, 24 h post-treatment and 3 weeks post-treatment, and a total of 144 stool samples were analyzed. The gut bacterial composition was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Tribendimidine given alone or together with oxantel-pamoate, and the combination of albendazole and oxantel pamoate were not associated with any major changes in the taxonomic composition of the gut microbiota in this population, at both the short-term post-treatment (24 h) and long-term post-treatment (3 weeks) periods. A high abundance of the bacterial phylum Bacteroidetes was observed following administration of tribendimidine plus ivermectin 24 h after treatment, due predominantly to difference in abundance of the families Prevotellaceae and Candidatus homeothermaceae. This effect is transient and disappears three weeks after treatment. Higher abundance of Bacteroidetes predicts an increase in metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of B vitamins. This study highlights a strong relationship between tribendimidine and ivermectin administration and the gut microbiota and additional studies assessing the functional aspects as well as potential health-associated outcomes of these interactions are required

    Water stable molecular n-doping produces organic electrochemical transistors with high transconductance and record stability.

    From established to emergent technologies, doping plays a crucial role in all semiconducting devices. Doping could, theoretically, be an excellent technique for improving repressively low transconductances in n-type organic electrochemical transistors - critical for advancing logic circuits for bioelectronic and neuromorphic technologies. However, the technical challenge is extreme: n-doped polymers are unstable in electrochemical transistor operating environments, air and water (electrolyte). Here, the first demonstration of doping in electron transporting organic electrochemical transistors is reported. The ammonium salt tetra-n-butylammonium fluoride is simply admixed with the conjugated polymer poly(N,N'-bis(7-glycol)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-co-2,2'-bithiophene-co-N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide), and found to act as a simultaneous molecular dopant and morphology-additive. The combined effects enhance the n-type transconductance with improved channel capacitance and mobility. Furthermore, operational and shelf-life stability measurements showcase the first example of water-stable n-doping in a polymer. Overall, the results set a precedent for doping/additives to impact organic electrochemical transistors as powerfully as they have in other semiconducting devices
