STRATEGIC GEOGRAPHIC POSITIONING OF SEA LEVEL GAUGES TO AID IN EARLY DETECTION OF TSUNAMIS IN THE INTRA-AMERICAS SEA
The potential impact of past Caribbean tsunamis generated by earthquakes and/or massive submarine slides/slumps, as well as the tsunamigenic potential and population distribution within the Intra-Americas Sea (IAS) is examined to help define the optimal location for coastal sea level gauges intended to serve as elements of a regional tsunami warning system. The goal of this study is to identify the minimum number of sea level gauge locations to aid in tsunami detection and provide the most warning time to the largest number of people. We identified 12 initial, prioritized locations for coastal sea level gauge installation. Our study area approximately encompasses 7oN, 59oW to 36oN, 98oW. The results of this systematic approach to assess priority locations for coastal sea level gauges will assist in developing a tsunami warning system (TWS) for the IAS by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Regional Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE-GOOS)

Chromosome 9: linkage for borderline personality disorder features.
Objective A large-scale twin study implicated genetic influences on borderline personality disorder (BPO) features, with a heritability estimate of 42%. To date, no genome-wide linkage study has been conducted to identify the genomic region(s) containing the quantitative trait loci that influence the manifestation of BPD features. Methods We conducted a family-based linkage study using Merlin regress. The participating families were drawn from the community-based Netherlands Twin Register. The sample consisted of 711 sibling pairs with phenotype and genotype data, and 561 additional parents with genotype data. BPD features were assessed on a quantitative scale. Results Evidence for linkage was found on chromosomes 1, 4, 9, and 18. The highest linkage peak was found on chromosome 9p at marker D9S286 with a logarithm of odds score of 3.548 (empirical P= 0.0001). Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first linkage study on BPD features and shows that chromosome 9 is the richest candidate for genes influencing BPD. The results of this study will move the field closer to determining the genetic etiology of BPD and may have important implications for treatment programs in the future. Association studies in this region are, however, warranted to detect the actual genes. © 2008 Wolters Kluwer Health|Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
WoMMBAT: A user interface for hierarchical Bayesian estimation of working memory capacity
The change detection paradigm has become an important tool for researchers studying working memory. Change detection is especially useful for studying visual working memory, because recall paradigms are difficult to employ in the visual modality. Pashler (Perception & Psychophysics, 44, 369–378, 1988) and Cowan (Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 24, 87–114, 2001) suggested formulas for estimating working memory capacity from change detection data. Although these formulas have become widely used, Morey (Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 55, 8–24, 2011) showed that the formulas suffer from a number of issues, including inefficient use of information, bias, volatility, uninterpretable parameter estimates, and violation of ANOVA assumptions. Morey presented a hierarchical Bayesian extension of Pashler’s and Cowan’s basic models that mitigates these issues. Here, we present WoMMBAT (Working Memory Modeling using Bayesian Analysis Techniques) software for fitting Morey’s model to data. WoMMBAT has a graphical user interface, is freely available, and is cross-platform, running on Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems
Symbolic powers of monomial ideals and Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted digraphs
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras
of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted
oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two
with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we
classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary
components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we
present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert
bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between
its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the
Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive
weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds. It is shown that
edge ideals of weighted acyclic tournaments are Cohen--Macaulay and satisfy

Clinical and molecular characterization of HER2 amplified-pancreatic cancer
<p>Background:
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal and molecularly diverse malignancies. Repurposing of therapeutics that target specific molecular mechanisms in different disease types offers potential for rapid improvements in outcome. Although HER2 amplification occurs in pancreatic cancer, it is inadequately characterized to exploit the potential of anti-HER2 therapies.</p>
<p>Methods:
HER2 amplification was detected and further analyzed using multiple genomic sequencing approaches. Standardized reference laboratory assays defined HER2 amplification in a large cohort of patients (n = 469) with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).</p>
<p>Results:
An amplified inversion event (1 MB) was identified at the HER2 locus in a patient with PDAC. Using standardized laboratory assays, we established diagnostic criteria for HER2 amplification in PDAC, and observed a prevalence of 2%. Clinically, HER2- amplified PDAC was characterized by a lack of liver metastases, and a preponderance of lung and brain metastases. Excluding breast and gastric cancer, the incidence of HER2-amplified cancers in the USA is >22,000 per annum.</p>
<p>Conclusions:
HER2 amplification occurs in 2% of PDAC, and has distinct features with implications for clinical practice. The molecular heterogeneity of PDAC implies that even an incidence of 2% represents an attractive target for anti-HER2 therapies, as options for PDAC are limited. Recruiting patients based on HER2 amplification, rather than organ of origin, could make trials of anti-HER2 therapies feasible in less common cancer types.</p>

Esse trabalho objetiva relatar a construção de um caderno de atividades para o ensino de trigonometria enfocando a fusão possível entre a abordagem histórica e o ensino de matemática. Para isso são feitas considerações sobre a história da matemática enquanto metodologia de ensino, sobre a formação do professor de matemática que vai ensinar trigonometria e sobre curso de extensão realizado com participação de professores de matemática do ensino básico. Por fim, apresentamos argumentos utilizados no curso sobre a sequência de ensino e a tênue relação entre história da matemática e conteúdo matemático escolar
Women’s experiences of wearing therapeutic footwear in three European countries
Background: Therapeutic footwear is recommended for those people with severe foot problems associated with
rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it is known that many do not wear them. Although previous European studies
have recommended service and footwear design improvements, it is not known if services have improved or if this
footwear meets the personal needs of people with RA. As an earlier study found that this footwear has more
impact on women than males, this study explores women’s experiences of the process of being provided with it
and wearing it. No previous work has compared women’s experiences of this footwear in different countries,
therefore this study aimed to explore the potential differences between the UK, the Netherlands and Spain.
Method: Women with RA and experience of wearing therapeutic footwear were purposively recruited. Ten women
with RA were interviewed in each of the three countries. An interpretive phenomenological approach (IPA) was
adopted during data collection and analysis. Conversational style interviews were used to collect the data.
Results: Six themes were identified: feet being visibly different because of RA; the referring practitioners’ approach
to the patient; the dispensing practitioners’ approach to the patient; the footwear being visible as different to
others; footwear influencing social participation; and the women’s wishes for improved footwear services. Despite
their nationality, these women revealed that therapeutic footwear invokes emotions of sadness, shame and anger
and that it is often the final and symbolic marker of the effects of RA on self perception and their changed lives.
This results in severe restriction of important activities, particularly those involving social participation. However,
where a patient focussed approach was used, particularly by the practitioners in Spain and the Netherlands, the
acceptance of this footwear was much more evident and there was less wastage as a result of the footwear being
prescribed and then not worn. In the UK, the women were more likely to passively accept the footwear with the
only choice being to reject it once it had been provided. All the women were vocal about what would improve
their experiences and this centred on the consultation with both the referring practitioner and the practitioner that
provides the footwear.
Conclusion: This unique study, carried out in three countries has revealed emotive and personal accounts of what
it is like to have an item of clothing replaced with an ‘intervention’. The participant’s experience of their
consultations with practitioners has revealed the tension between the practitioners’ requirements and the women’s
‘social’ needs. Practitioners need greater understanding of the social and emotional consequences of using
therapeutic footwear as an intervention
ENIGMA and global neuroscience: A decade of large-scale studies of the brain in health and disease across more than 40 countries
This review summarizes the last decade of work by the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, a global alliance of over 1400 scientists across 43 countries, studying the human brain in health and disease. Building on large-scale genetic studies that discovered the first robustly replicated genetic loci associated with brain metrics, ENIGMA has diversified into over 50 working groups (WGs), pooling worldwide data and expertise to answer fundamental questions in neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and genetics. Most ENIGMA WGs focus on specific psychiatric and neurological conditions, other WGs study normal variation due to sex and gender differences, or development and aging; still other WGs develop methodological pipelines and tools to facilitate harmonized analyses of "big data" (i.e., genetic and epigenetic data, multimodal MRI, and electroencephalography data). These international efforts have yielded the largest neuroimaging studies to date in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. More recent ENIGMA WGs have formed to study anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts and behavior, sleep and insomnia, eating disorders, irritability, brain injury, antisocial personality and conduct disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. Here, we summarize the first decade of ENIGMA's activities and ongoing projects, and describe the successes and challenges encountered along the way. We highlight the advantages of collaborative large-scale coordinated data analyses for testing reproducibility and robustness of findings, offering the opportunity to identify brain systems involved in clinical syndromes across diverse samples and associated genetic, environmental, demographic, cognitive, and psychosocial factors
Engineering key components in a synthetic eukaryotic signal transduction pathway
Signal transduction underlies how living organisms detect and respond to stimuli. A goal of synthetic biology is to rewire natural signal transduction systems. Bacteria, yeast, and plants sense environmental aspects through conserved histidine kinase (HK) signal transduction systems. HK protein components are typically comprised of multiple, relatively modular, and conserved domains. Phosphate transfer between these components may exhibit considerable cross talk between the otherwise apparently linear pathways, thereby establishing networks that integrate multiple signals. We show that sequence conservation and cross talk can extend across kingdoms and can be exploited to produce a synthetic plant signal transduction system. In response to HK cross talk, heterologously expressed bacterial response regulators, PhoB and OmpR, translocate to the nucleus on HK activation. Using this discovery, combined with modification of PhoB (PhoB-VP64), we produced a key component of a eukaryotic synthetic signal transduction pathway. In response to exogenous cytokinin, PhoB-VP64 translocates to the nucleus, binds a synthetic PlantPho promoter, and activates gene expression. These results show that conserved-signaling components can be used across kingdoms and adapted to produce synthetic eukaryotic signal transduction pathways
