COMPARATIVE ANALYSES OF THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF REFRIGERANTS R134A, R245fa, R407C AND R600a DURING FLOW BOILING IN A MICROCHANNELS HEAT SINK
A comparative study of the performance of of refrigerants R134a, R407C, R245fa and R600a during flow boiling was performed for a 123x494 µm2 heat sink composed of 50 parallel rectangular microchannels. Heat transfer experimental results for heat fluxes up to 310 kW/m2, mass velocities from 300 to 800 kg/(m2 s), liquid subcoolings of 5 and 10 °C and saturation temperature close to 30 ºC were obtained. Global heat transfer coefficients (footprint) up to 10 kW/(m2 °C) were found. The liquid superheating necessary for the onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) was also characterized, and the fluids R245fa and R407C presented the highest and lowest, respectively, superheating to trigger the boiling process. Moreover, for a fixed averaged vapor quality, the average effective heat transfer coefficient increases with increasing mass velocity and liquid subcooling. The refrigerants R600a and R407C presented the highest and the lowest heat transfer coefficients, respectively. Five heat transfer predictive methods from literature provided accurate predictions of the data for R134a, R245fa and R600a, capturing most of the data trends. No one method provided accurate predictions of the heat transfer coefficient data of R407C
Ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR1) mutations in two patients with tubular aggregate myopathy
Two likely causative mutations in the RYR1 gene were identified in two patients with myopathy with tubular aggregates, but no evidence of cores or core-like pathology on muscle biopsy. These patients were clinically evaluated and underwent routine laboratory investigations, electrophysiologic tests, muscle biopsy and muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They reported stiffness of the muscles following sustained activity or cold exposure and had serum creatine kinase elevation. The identified RYR1 mutations (p.Thr2206Met or p.Gly2434Arg, in patient 1 and patient 2, respectively) were previously identified in individuals with malignant hyperthermia susceptibility and are reported as causative according to the European Malignant Hyperthermia Group rules. To our knowledge, these data represent the first identification of causative mutations in the RYR1 gene in patients with tubular aggregate myopathy and extend the spectrum of histological alterations caused by mutation in the RYR1 gene
Improved Confinement in JET High {beta} Plasmas with an ITER-Like Wall
The replacement of the JET carbon wall (C-wall) by a Be/W ITER-like wall
(ILW) has affected the plasma energy confinement. To investigate this,
experiments have been performed with both the C-wall and ILW to vary the
heating power over a wide range for plasmas with different shapes.Comment: 50 pages, 32 figures. This is an author-created, un-copyedited

Comparison of H-mode plasmas in JET-ILW and JET-C with and without nitrogen seeding
In high confinement mode, highly shaped plasmas with edge localized modes in JET, and for heating power of 15-17 MW, the edge fluid code EDGE2D-EIRENE predicts transition to detachment assisted by nitrogen at the low field side (LFS) target when more than 50% of the power crossing the separatrix between ELMs is radiated in the divertor chamber, i.e. ∼4 MW. This is observed both in the ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) and in the carbon wall (JET-C) configurations and is consistent with experimental observations within their uncertainty. In these conditions, peak heat fluxes below 1 MW m-2 are measured at the LFS target and predicted for both wall configurations. When the JET-C configuration is replaced with the JET-ILW, a factor of two reduction in the divertor radiated power and 25-50% increase in the peak and total power deposited to the LFS divertor plate is predicted by EDGE2D-EIRENE for unseeded plasmas similar to experimental observations. At the detachment threshold, EDGE2D-EIRENE shows that nitrogen radiates more than 80% of the total divertor radiation in JET-ILW with beryllium contributing less than a few %. With JET-C, nitrogen radiates more than 70% with carbon providing less than 20% of the total radiation. Therefore, the lower intrinsic divertor radiation with JET-ILW is compensated by stronger nitrogen radiation contribution in simulations leading to detachment at similar total divertor radiation fractions. 20-100% higher deuterium molecular fraction in the divertor recycling fluxes is predicted with light JET-C materials when compared to heavy tungsten. EDGE2D-EIRENE simulations indicate that the stronger molecular contribution can reduce the divertor peak power deposition in high recycling conditions by 10-20% due to enhanced power dissipation by molecular interaction
Measurement of the branching ratios of the decays Xi0 --> Sigma+ e- nubar and anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu
From 56 days of data taking in 2002, the NA48/1 experiment observed 6316 Xi0
--> Sigma+ e- nubar candidates (with the subsequent Sigma+ --> p pi0 decay) and
555 anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu candidates with background contamination of
215+-44 and 136+-8 events, respectively. From these samples, the branching
ratios BR(Xi0 --> Sigma+ e- nubar)= (2.51+-0.03stat+-0.09syst)E(-4) and
BR(anti-Xi0 --> anti-Sigma+ e+ nu)= (2.55+-0.14stat+-0.10syst)E(-4) were
measured allowing the determination of the CKM matrix element |Vus| =
0.209+0.023-0.028. Using the Particle Data Group average for |Vus| obtained in
semileptonic kaon decays, we measured the ratio g1/f1 = 1.20+-0.05 of the
axial-vector to vector form factors.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures Submitted to Phys.Lett.
Anisotropy and chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays using arrival directions measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory
The Pierre Auger Collaboration has reported evidence for anisotropy in the
distribution of arrival directions of the cosmic rays with energies
eV. These show a correlation with the distribution
of nearby extragalactic objects, including an apparent excess around the
direction of Centaurus A. If the particles responsible for these excesses at
are heavy nuclei with charge , the proton component of the
sources should lead to excesses in the same regions at energies . We here
report the lack of anisotropies in these directions at energies above
(for illustrative values of ). If the anisotropies
above are due to nuclei with charge , and under reasonable
assumptions about the acceleration process, these observations imply stringent
constraints on the allowed proton fraction at the lower energies
ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of
rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ()
and Ke4(00) () with nearly one percent
background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching
rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new
inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral
Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new
data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the invariant mass
spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final
results from an analysis of about 400 rare
decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during
low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The
results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT
description.Comment: XIIth International Conference on Heavy Quarks and Leptons 2014,

A new measurement of direct CP violation in two pion decays of the neutral kaon
The NA48 experiment at CERN has performed a new measurement of direct CP
violation, based on data taken in 1997 by simultaneously collecting K_L and K_S
decays into pi0pi0 and pi+pi-. The result for the CP violating parameter
Re(epsilon'/epsilon) is (18.5 +/- 4.5(stat)} +/- 5.8 (syst))x10^{-4}.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
Recent NA48/2 and NA62 results
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented
statistics of rare kaon decays in the modes: () and ()
with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved
measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final
results from the analysis of 381 rare decay
candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented.
The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation
Theory (ChPT) description.Comment: Prepared for the Proceedings of "Moriond QCD and High Energy
