We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in Pb-Pb
collisions at sNN = 2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE
Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral
collisions, corresponding to 0-5% and 70-80% of the hadronic Pb-Pb cross
section. The measured charged particle spectra in ∣η∣<0.8 and 0.3<pT<20 GeV/c are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same
sNN, scaled by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon
collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification
factor RAA. The result indicates only weak medium effects (RAA≈ 0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, RAA
reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at pT=6-7GeV/c and increases
significantly at larger pT. The measured suppression of high-pT particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies,
indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central Pb-Pb collisions at

The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb
collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is
presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the
longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The
pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than

37 pages, 15 figures, revised version, accepted by JINSTALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 micron in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10^5 charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.Peer reviewe

- Field of study
The first simultaneous test of muon-electron universality using
B+→K+ℓ+ℓ− and B0→K∗0ℓ+ℓ− decays is performed, in two ranges of the dilepton
invariant-mass squared, q2. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in
proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and
2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. Each
of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in
the given q2 interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements. The

A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay
Bs0→ϕϕ is performed using pp collision data collected
by the LHCb experiment at % at s=13 TeV, the center-of-mass energy of
13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}. The
CP-violating phase and direct CP-violation parameter are measured
to be ϕssˉs=−0.042±0.075±0.009 rad and
∣λ∣=1.004±0.030±0.009, respectively, assuming the same values
for all polarization states of the ϕϕ system. In these results, the
first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters
are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence
for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb
measurements using pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV,
yielding ϕssˉs=−0.074±0.069 rad and ∣lambda∣=1.009±0.030. This is the most precise study of time-dependent CP violation
in a penguin-dominated B meson decay. The results are consistent with

- Field of study
A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B0→D0Ds+π− and B+→D−Ds+π+, which are
related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the
LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8
and 13TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated
luminosity of 9fb−1. Two new resonant states with masses of
2.908±0.011±0.020GeV and widths of
0.136±0.023±0.011GeV are observed, which decay to Ds+π+ and
Ds+π− respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of
a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content
[csˉudˉ], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of
[csˉuˉd] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity 0+,
and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests

- Field of study
An amplitude analysis of the B+→Ds+Ds−K+ decay is carried out to
study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using
proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass
energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as
X(3960), is observed in the Ds+Ds− invariant-mass spectrum with
significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width and the
quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956±5±10 MeV,
43±13±8 MeV and JPC=0++, respectively, where the first
uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the
new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state
composed of ccˉssˉ quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is
found around 4140 MeV in the Ds+Ds− invariant mass, which might be
caused either by a new resonance with the 0++ assignment or by a J/ψϕ↔Ds+Ds− coupled-channel effect.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and

The branching fraction of the rare decay Λb0→Λ(1520)μ+μ− is measured for the first time, in the squared dimuon mass
intervals, q2, excluding the J/ψ and ψ(2S) regions. The data
sample analyzed was collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies
of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $9\
\mathrm{fb}^{-1}.Theresultinthehighestq^{2}interval,q^{2} >15.0\
\mathrm{GeV}^2/c^4$, where theoretical predictions have the smallest model

The effect of event background fluctuations on charged particle jet
reconstruction in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV has been
measured with the ALICE experiment. The main sources of non-statistical
fluctuations are characterized based purely on experimental data with an
unbiased method, as well as by using single high pT particles and
simulated jets embedded into real Pb-Pb events and reconstructed with the
anti-kT jet finder. The influence of a low transverse momentum cut-off
on particles used in the jet reconstruction is quantified by varying the
minimum track pT between 0.15 GeV/c and 2 GeV/c. For embedded jets
reconstructed from charged particles with pT>0.15 GeV/c, the
uncertainty in the reconstructed jet transverse momentum due to the heavy-ion
background is measured to be 11.3 GeV/c (standard deviation) for the 10% most
central Pb-Pb collisions, slightly larger than the value of 11.0 GeV/c
measured using the unbiased method. For a higher particle transverse momentum
threshold of 2 GeV/c, which will generate a stronger bias towards hard
fragmentation in the jet finding process, the standard deviation of the
fluctuations in the reconstructed jet transverse momentum is reduced to 4.8-5.0
GeV/c for the 10% most central events. A non-Gaussian tail of the momentum
uncertainty is observed and its impact on the reconstructed jet spectrum is
evaluated for varying particle momentum thresholds, by folding the measured
