Interactions Between Peptide Assemblies and Proteins for Medicine

    No full text
Peptide assembly is attractive not only to develop biotechnological tools and smart nanomaterials, but also to treat pathologies in new ways. This Review focuses on recent progress made in the exciting area pertaining the interaction between peptide assemblies and proteins. Earlier works aimed to identify proteins able to bind peptide assemblies for therapeutics' delivery and biocompatible scaffolds. Recent advancements cover more applications that go beyond tissue regeneration and biomaterials. On one hand, self-assembling peptides interacting with proteins can inhibit pathological amyloid fibrillation, or boost the immune response to vaccines. On the other, they have been exploited to promote protein crystallization, also for therapeutics' delivery. As research advances in this exciting area, it opens the way towards a qualitative leap in the clinical translation of supramolecular medicinal chemistry to creatively tackle unmet challenges of modern disease treatment and prevention

To investigate the role of Lyt-2 and Thy-1 in cytolysis, we have generated, by ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis and selection, variants of the cloned cytolytic T lymphocyte line L3 that specifically lack either Lyt-2 or Thy-1. An analysis of these variants indicates that neither Lyt-2 nor Lyt-3 is responsible for the lethal hit, but suggests that Lyt-2 and/or Lyt-3 are required for an antigen receptor functional in cytolysis. The data also suggest that the expression of Lyt-3 on the cell surface is not independent of the expression of Lyt-2. Finally the data indicate the Thy-1 plays no role in cytolysis.6788878PMC218609

Search for a Heavy Bottom-like Quark in pppp Collisions at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

    No full text
A search for pair-produced bottom-like quarks in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is conducted with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The decay b' to tW is considered in this search. The b' b'-bar to tW^- t-bar W^+ process can be identified by the distinctive signature of trileptons and same-sign dileptons. With a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 inverse picobarns, no excess above the standard model background predictions is observed and a b' quark with a mass between 255 and 361 GeV/c^2 is excluded at the 95% confidence level

Measurement of the inclusive and differential WZ production cross sections, polarization angles, and triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    No full text
The associated production of a W and a Z boson is studied in final states with multiple leptons produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using 137 fb1^{-1} of data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. A measurement of the total inclusive production cross section yields σtot\sigma_{\text{tot}}(pp \to WZ) = 50.6 ±\pm 0.8 (stat) ±\pm 1.5 (syst) ±\pm 1.1 (lum) ±\pm 0.5 (thy) pb. Measurements of the fiducial and differential cross sections for several key observables are also performed in all the final-state lepton flavour and charge compositions with a total of three charged leptons, which can be electrons or muons. All results are compared with theoretical predictions computed up to next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics plus next-to-leading order in electroweak theory and for various sets of parton distribution functions. The results include direct measurements of the charge asymmetry and the W and Z vector boson polarization. The first observation of longitudinally polarized W bosons in WZ production is reported. Anomalous gauge couplings are searched for, leading to new constraints on beyond-the-standard-model contributions to the WZ triple gauge coupling
