    Measurement of CP observables in B± → D(⁎)K± and B± → D(⁎)π± decays

    Measurements of CP observables in B ± →D (⁎) K ± and B ± →D (⁎) π ± decays are presented, where D (⁎) indicates a neutral D or D ⁎ meson that is an admixture of D (⁎)0 and D¯ (⁎)0 states. Decays of the D ⁎ meson to the Dπ 0 and Dγ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon, resulting in distinctive shapes in the B candidate invariant mass distribution. Decays of the D meson are fully reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K − and π + π − final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0, 1.0 and 2.0 fb −1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of s=7, 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The study of B ± →D ⁎ K ± and B ± →D ⁎ π ± decays using a partial reconstruction method is the first of its kind, while the measurement of B ± →DK ± and B ± →Dπ ± decays is an update of previous LHCb measurements. The B ± →DK ± results are the most precise to date

    Lessons learned from the INHANCE consortium: An overview of recent results on head and neck cancer

    Objective: To summarize the latest evidence on head and neck cancer epidemiology from the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. Subjects and Methods: INHANCE was established in 2004 to elucidate the etiology of head and neck cancer through pooled analyses of individual-level data on a large scale. We summarize results from recent INHANCE-based publications updating our 2015 overview. Results: Seventeen papers were published between 2015 and May 2020. These studies further define the nature of risks associated with tobacco and alcohol, and occupational exposures on head and neck cancer. The beneficial effects on incidence of head and neck cancer were identified for good oral health, endogenous and exogenous hormonal factors, and selected aspects of diet related to fruit and vegetables. INHANCE has begun to develop risk prediction models and to pool follow-up data on their studies, finding that ~30% of cases had cancer recurrence and 9% second primary cancers, with overall- and disease-specific 5-year-survival of 51% and 57%, respectively. Conclusions: The number and importance of INHANCE scientific findings provides further evidence of the advantages of large-scale internationally collaborative projects and will support the development of prevention strategies

    Observation of ηc(2S)ppˉ\eta_{c}(2S) \to p \bar p and search for X(3872)ppˉX(3872) \to p \bar p decays

    The first observation of the decay ηc(2S)ppˉ\eta_{c}(2S) \to p \bar p is reported using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb13.0\rm \, fb^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The ηc(2S)\eta_{c}(2S) resonance is produced in the decay B+[ccˉ]K+B^{+} \to [c\bar c] K^{+}. The product of branching fractions normalised to that for the J/ψJ/\psi intermediate state, Rηc(2S){\cal R}_{\eta_{c}(2S)}, is measured to be \begin{align*} {\cal R}_{\eta_{c}(2S)}\equiv\frac{{\mathcal B}(B^{+} \to \eta_{c}(2S) K^{+}) \times {\mathcal B}(\eta_{c}(2S) \to p \bar p)}{{\mathcal B}(B^{+} \to J/\psi K^{+}) \times {\mathcal B}(J/\psi\to p \bar p)} =~& (1.58 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-2}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No signals for the decays B+X(3872)(ppˉ)K+B^{+} \to X(3872) (\to p \bar p) K^{+} and B+ψ(3770)(ppˉ)K+B^{+} \to \psi(3770) (\to p \bar p) K^{+} are seen, and the 95\% confidence level upper limits on their relative branching ratios are % found to be RX(3872)<0.25×102{\cal R}_{X(3872)}<0.25\times10^{-2} and Rψ(3770))<0.10{\cal R}_{\psi(3770))}<0.10. In addition, the mass differences between the ηc(1S)\eta_{c}(1S) and the J/ψJ/\psi states, between the ηc(2S)\eta_{c}(2S) and the ψ(2S)\psi(2S) states, and the natural width of the ηc(1S)\eta_{c}(1S) are measured as \begin{align*} M_{J/\psi} - M_{\eta_{c}(1S)} =~& 110.2 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.9 \rm \, MeV, M_{\psi(2S)} -M_{\eta_{c}(2S)} =~ & 52.5 \pm 1.7 \pm 0.6 \rm \, MeV, \Gamma_{\eta_{c}(1S)} =~& 34.0 \pm 1.9 \pm 1.3 \rm \, MeV. \end{align*}Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lhcbproject.web.cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/LHCbProjectPublic/LHCb-PAPER-2016-016.htm

    First observation of forward ZbbˉZ \rightarrow b \bar{b} production in pppp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV

    The decay Z→bb¯ is reconstructed in pp collision data, corresponding to 2 fb −1 of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV. The product of the Z production cross-section and the Z→bb¯ branching fraction is measured for candidates in the fiducial region defined by two particle-level b -quark jets with pseudorapidities in the range 2.220 GeV and dijet invariant mass in the range 4520GeVanddijetinvariantmassintherange GeV and dijet invariant mass in the range 45 < m_{jj} < 165GeV.Fromasignalyieldof GeV. From a signal yield of 5462 \pm 763 Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}events,wheretheuncertaintyisstatistical,aproductioncrosssectiontimesbranchingfractionof events, where the uncertainty is statistical, a production cross-section times branching fraction of 332 \pm 46 \pm 59pbisobtained,wherethefirstuncertaintyisstatisticalandthesecondsystematic.Themeasuredsignificanceofthesignalyieldis6.0standarddeviations.Thismeasurementrepresentsthefirstobservationofthe pb is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measured significance of the signal yield is 6.0 standard deviations. This measurement represents the first observation of the Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}productionintheforwardregionof production in the forward region of pp$ collisions

    First measurement of Ωc0 production in pp collisions at s=13 TeV

    The inclusive production of the charm–strange baryon 0 c is measured for the first time via its hadronic √ decay into −π+ at midrapidity (|y| &lt;0.5) in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy s =13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The transverse momentum (pT) differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 2 &lt; pT &lt; 12 GeV/c. The pT dependence of the 0 c-baryon production relative to the prompt D0-meson and to the prompt 0 c-baryon production is compared to various models that take different hadronisation mechanisms into consideration. In the measured pT interval, the ratio of the pT-integrated cross sections of 0 c and prompt + c baryons multiplied by the −π+ branching ratio is found to be larger by a factor of about 20 with a significance of about 4σ when compared to e+e− collisions

    Elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity relative to the spectator plane in Pb–Pb and Xe–Xe collisions

    Measurements of the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the collision plane defined by the spectator neutrons v2{ SP} in collisions of Pb ions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair √ 2.76 TeV and Xe ions at √ sNN = sNN =5.44 TeV are reported. The results are presented for charged particles produced at midrapidity as a function of centrality and transverse momentum for the 5–70% and 0.2–6 GeV/c ranges, respectively. The ratio between v2{ SP} and the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the participant plane v2{4}, estimated using four-particle correlations, deviates by up to 20% from unity depending on centrality. This observation differs strongly from the magnitude of the corresponding eccentricity ratios predicted by the TRENTo and the elliptic power models of initial state fluctuations that are tuned to describe the participant plane anisotropies. The differences can be interpreted as a decorrelation of the neutron spectator plane and the reaction plane because of fragmentation of the remnants from the colliding nuclei, which points to an incompleteness of current models describing the initial state fluctuations. A significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratio v2{ SP}/v2{4} is observed in all but the most central collisions, which may help to understand whether momentum anisotropies at low and intermediate transverse momentum have a common origin in initial state f luctuations. The ratios of v2{ SP} and v2{4} to the corresponding initial state eccentricities for Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at similar initial entropy density show a difference of (7.0 ±0.9)%with an additional variation of +1.8% when including RHIC data in the TRENTo parameter extraction. These observations provide new experimental constraints for viscous effects in the hydrodynamic modeling of the expanding quark–gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC
