    Improved performance of perylenediimide-based lasers

    The aim of this work was to improve the laser performance, in terms of threshold and operational lifetime, of lasers based on polymer films doped with perylenediimide (PDI) derivatives as active media. For such purpose, we first investigated the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties of perylene orange (PDI-O), when doped into polystyrene (PS) films. Lower ASE thresholds and larger photostabilities than those of similar films containing another PDI derivative (PDI-C6), recently reported in the literature, have been measured. Results have been interpreted in terms of the photoluminescence efficiency of the films, which depends on the type of molecular arrangement, inferred with the help of nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. We also show that PS films have a better ASE performance, i.e. lower thresholds and larger photostabilities, than those based on poly(methyl methacrylate), which was recently highlighted as one of the best matrixes for PDI-O. Finally, a one-dimensional second-order distributed feedback laser using PS doped with PDI-O was fabricated and characterized. This device has shown a threshold significantly lower (by around one order of magnitude) than that of a similar laser based on PDI-C6-doped PS.We thank support from the Spanish Government (MECC) and the European Community (FEDER) through grants MAT2008-06648-C02 and MAT-2011-28167-C02, as well as from the University of Alicante.     Thermal-nanoimprint lithography for perylenediimide-based distributed feedback laser fabrication

    In the present work thermal-nanoimprint lithography of various commercial thermoplastic resists as matrixes for perylenediimides (PDIs) has been studied. This fabrication method reduces the number of fabrication steps, and therefore, the cost of the obtained distributed feedback (DFB) lasers.     El nuevo siglo ha traído grandes cambios a la enseñanza de lenguas. Las metodologías tradicionales ya no se ajustan a las necesidades del alumnado actual. En este sentido, y con los estudiantes como elemento central de toda metodología de idiomas, los docentes deben buscar recursos motivadores y novedosos que despierten el interés del alumnado y faciliten el proceso de adquisición lingüística. De hecho, la web 2.0 y las redes sociales se han venido explotando últimamente en la glotodidáctica debido a este nuevo perfil de estudiantes con el que nos encontramos: los nativos digitales. Para ir un paso más allá, este artículo enmarcado dentro de la red “Aplicación de la tecnología a la enseñanza del español a través del deporte”, reunirá dos elementos que resultan especialmente motivadores a los estudiantes. Por un lado, el tema a través del que se estudian los contenidos: el deporte. Por otro, el medio: la tecnología. Así, se presentará una serie de aplicaciones o apps lingüísticas, periodísticas, etc. que facilitarán el aprendizaje del español mediante su uso desde teléfonos móviles y dispositivos electrónicos. Se trata, en definitiva, de interesantes aplicaciones para trabajar contenidos lingüísticos a través del deporte que después podrán incorporarse a las clases de enseñanza de idiomas

    Stars and dark matter in the spiral gravitational lens 2237+0305

    We construct a mass model for the spiral lens galaxy 2237+0305, at redshift z_l=0.04, based on gravitational-lensing constraints, HI rotation, and new stellar-kinematic information, based on data taken with the ESI spectrograph on the 10m Keck-II Telescope. High resolution rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles along two perpendicular directions, close to the major and minor axes of the lens galaxy, were obtained by fitting the Mgb-Fe absorption line region. The stellar rotation curve rises slowly and flattens at r~1.5" (~1.1 kpc). The velocity dispersion profile is approximately flat. A combination of photometric, kinematic and lensing information is used to construct a mass model for the four major mass components of the system -- the dark matter halo, disc, bulge, and bar. The best-fitting solution has a dark matter halo with a logarithmic inner density slope of gamma=0.9+/-0.3 for rho_DM propto r^-gamma, a bulge with M/L_B=6.6+/-0.3 Upsilon_odot, and a disc with M/L_B =1.2+/-0.3 Upsilon_odot, in agreement with measurements of late-type spirals. The bulge dominates support in the inner regions where the multiple images are located and is therefore tightly constrained by the observations. The disc is sub-maximal and contributes 45+/-11 per cent of the rotational support of the galaxy at 2.2r_d. The halo mass is (2.0+/-0.6) x 10^12 M_odot, and the stellar to virial mass ratio is 7.0+/-2.3 per cent, consistent with typical galaxies of the same mass.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS, in pres

    Prospective multicenter study of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from 83 hospitals in Spain reveals high in vitro susceptibility to colistin and meropenem

    The aim of this study was to determine the impact of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in Spain in 2013 by describing the prevalence, dissemination, and geographic distribution of CPE clones, and their population structure and antibi- otic susceptibility. From February 2013 to May 2013, 83 hospitals (about 40,000 hospital beds) prospectively collected nondupli- cate Enterobacteriaceae using the screening cutoff recommended by EUCAST. Carbapenemase characterization was performed by phenotypic methods and confirmed by PCR and sequencing. Multilocus sequencing types (MLST) were determined for Kleb- siella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. A total of 702 Enterobacteriaceae isolates met the inclusion criteria; 379 (54%) were CPE. OXA-48 (71.5%) and VIM-1 (25.3%) were the most frequent carbapenemases, and K. pneumoniae (74.4%), Enterobacter cloacae (10.3%), and E. coli (8.4%) were the species most affected. Susceptibility to colistin, amikacin, and meropenem was 95.5%, 81.3%, and 74.7%, respectively. The most prevalent sequence types (STs) were ST11 and ST405 for K. pneumoniae and ST131 for E. coli. Forty-five (54.1%) of the hospitals had at least one CPE case. For K. pneumoniae, ST11/OXA-48, ST15/OXA-48, ST405/ OXA-48, and ST11/VIM-1 were detected in two or more Spanish provinces. ST11 isolates carried four carbapenemases (VIM-1, OXA-48, KPC-2, and OXA-245), but ST405 isolates carried OXA-48 only. A wide interregional spread of CPE in Spain was ob- served, mainly due to a few successful clones of OXA-48-producing K. pneumoniae (e.g., ST11 and ST405). The dissemination of OXA-48-producing E. coli is a new finding of public health concern. According to the susceptibilities determined in vitro, most of the CPE (94.5%) had three or more options for antibiotic treatment

    Sonidegib as a Locally Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma Therapy in Real-life Clinical Setting: A National Multicentre Study

    Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent cancer. A minority of BCCs have an aggressive behaviour (laBCC) and may require hedgehog pathway inhibitors such as sonidegib as its treatment. Objective: To describe the use of sonidegib in a large number of patients and provide more data on its real-life efficacy and safety profile.Methods: We conducted a retrospective and multicentric study that included patients treated with sonidegib. Epidemiological, effectiveness and safety data were collected.Results: A total of 82 patients with a mean age of 73.9 years were included. Ten patients had Gorlin syndrome. Median treatment duration was 6 months. Median follow-up duration was 34.2 months. Globally, 81.7% of the patients showed clinical improvement (52.4% partial response and 29.3% complete response), 12.2% clinical stability and 6.1% disease progression. There was no statistically significant difference in clinical improvement between the 24 h and 48 h sonidegib posology. After 6 months of treatment, 48.8% of the patients discontinued sonidegib. Prior vismodegib treatment and recurrent primary BCC were associated with a poorer response to sonidegib. At 6 months of treatment, 68.3% of the patients experienced at least one adverse effect. Conclusion: Sonidegib shows good effectiveness and acceptable safety profile in usual clinical practice.& COPY; 2023 AEDV.     Search for Dark Matter Annihilation in the Galactic Center with IceCube-79

    The Milky Way is expected to be embedded in a halo of dark matter particles, with the highest density in the central region, and decreasing density with the halo-centric radius. Dark matter might be indirectly detectable at Earth through a flux of stable particles generated in dark matter annihilations and peaked in the direction of the Galactic Center. We present a search for an excess flux of muon (anti-) neutrinos from dark matter annihilation in the Galactic Center using the cubic-kilometer-sized IceCube neutrino detector at the South Pole. There, the Galactic Center is always seen above the horizon. Thus, new and dedicated veto techniques against atmospheric muons are required to make the southern hemisphere accessible for IceCube. We used 319.7 live-days of data from IceCube operating in its 79-string configuration during 2010 and 2011. No neutrino excess was found and the final result is compatible with the background. We present upper limits on the self-annihilation cross-section, \left, for WIMP masses ranging from 30 GeV up to 10 TeV, assuming cuspy (NFW) and flat-cored (Burkert) dark matter halo profiles, reaching down to 41024\simeq 4 \cdot 10^{-24} cm3^3 s1^{-1}, and 2.61023\simeq 2.6 \cdot 10^{-23} cm3^3 s1^{-1} for the νν\nu\overline{\nu} channel, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to EPJ-C, added references, extended limit overvie
