    My primary purpose for this study was to investigate whether a variety of whole body activities and improvisational movement such as those traditionally used in the general music classroom could be used in the instrumental classroom to assist in internalizing basic musical concepts of steady pulse and rhythm. In addition to seeing improvement in many students\u27 musical responses such tasks provided a window for me to observe and identify other underlying issues that caused difficulty in synchronization and rhythmic performance for some children. This may be the most important discovery of the study; one that will open the way toward more effective individualized instruction for students who will benefit from additional help in rhythmic performance

    Delayed improvement of depression and anxiety after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in stages of extended extra-valvular cardiac damage

    Background: Depression and anxiety are frequently occurring and likely to be linked to the severity of cardiac diseases like aortic stenosis (AS). This seems to be of interest since a staging classification of extra-valvular cardiac damage in AS has been introduced and shown to be of prognostic relevance. Objective: The current study aimed to investigate the frequency of depression and anxiety in association to staging and their dynamics after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Methods: A total number of 224 AS patients undergoing TAVI were classified according to the 2017 staging classification into stage 0 to 4 and further dichotomized into group A (stage 0 to 2) and B (stage 3 and 4). Using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D), patients were assigned to depressive versus non-depressive or anxious versus non-anxious per staging group respectively, and analyzed at baseline, 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months after TAVI. Results: After dichotomization, 158 patients (70.5%) were assigned to group A and 66 patients (29.5%) to group B. The part showing pathologic values for depression was 25.4% (57/224 patients) in the entire collective, 26.6% (42/158 patients) in group A and 22.7% (15/66 patients) in group B (p = n.s.). The proportion showing pathologic values for anxiety was 26.8% (60/224 patients) in the entire collective and did not differ between group A (24.7%, 39/158 patients) and B (31.8%, 21/66 patients) (p = n.s.). In patients revealing pathologic values for depression or anxiety prior to TAVI, there were significant and stable improvements over time observable already in short-term (6 weeks) follow-up in group A, and likewise, but later, in long-term (6/12 months) follow-up in group B. Conclusions: Although of proven prognostic relevance, higher stages of extra-valvular cardiac damage are not associated with higher rates of pre-existing depression or anxiety. The TAVI procedure resulted in a persisting reduction of depression and anxiety in patients showing pathologic values at baseline. Notably, these improvements are timely delayed in higher stage

    The genetic architecture of the human cerebral cortex

    The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and found significant enrichment for loci influencing total surface area within regulatory elements that are active during prenatal cortical development, supporting the radial unit hypothesis. Loci that affect regional surface area cluster near genes in Wnt signaling pathways, which influence progenitor expansion and areal identity. Variation in cortical structure is genetically correlated with cognitive function, Parkinson's disease, insomnia, depression, neuroticism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

    Integrating sustainability into strategic supplier portfolio selection

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to propose a comprehensive methodology and a problemspecific model for the configuration of the optimal strategic supplier portfolio in terms of traditional, performance-related objectives and sustainability targets. Design/methodology/approach - To bridge the research gap, i.e., to align strategic supplier portfolio selection with corporate sustainability targets, a hybrid model of the analytic network process (ANP) and goal programming (GP) is developed. To validate the model, a case example is presented and managerial feedback is collected. Findings - By enabling the integration of sustainability targets into strategic supplier portfolio configuration, the hybrid ANP-GP model contributes to research in the area of sustainable supply chain management. Results indicate that simplifying the model by omitting one or more details may lead to unfortunate actions. Research limitations/implications - The model has been applied using a case example in the automotive industry. To strengthen the findings, it should be examined under other terms as well. Practical implications - Integrating economic, environmental, and social targets into strategic supplier portfolio configuration reduces supply risks and promotes the achievement of the sustainability goals of the purchasing company. Social implications - Strategic supplier selection counts among the decisions that have an impact on the environment and society for several years. Configuring economically rational, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible supplier bases supports worldwide efforts towards sustainable development. Originality/value - Although sustainable supplier selection has gained importance in recent years, this is the first time that a comprehensive model for the determination of the optimal strategic supplier portfolio in terms of performance-related objectives and sustainability targets has been proposed

    Integrating three-dimensional sustainability in distribution centre selection: the process analysis method-based analytic network process

    In this paper, we propose a combined methodology for the selection of distribution centres (DCs) by integrating and balancing economic, environmental and social sustainability aspects. The analytic network process (ANP) permits to systematically evaluate possible DCs on the basis of a situation-specific decision structure. A systematic development of the decision networks, which is one of the core challenges using the ANP, is supported by the process analysis method which we extend for that purpose. The validity and soundness of the proposed framework are demonstrated by means of a case study. The case study results reveal that omitting aspects of sustainability can lead to unfortunate results
