    New Fermions at e+^+e^- Colliders: II.~Signals and Backgrounds

    We discuss the production, at high--energy e+^+e^- linear colliders, of new heavy fermions predicted by extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze in great details the various signals and the corresponding backgrounds for both pair production and single production in association with ordinary fermions. Concentrating on new leptons, we use a model detector for e+^+e^- collisions at a center of mass energy of 500 GeV, to illustrate the discovery potential of the Next Linear Colliders.Comment: 22 pages + 9 figures (not included: available by mail from A.     We analyze the production in e+ee^+e^- collisions of new heavy fermions stemming from extensions of the Standard Model. We write down the most general expression for the production of two heavy fermions and their subsequent decays, allowing for the polarization of the e+^+e^- initial state and taking into account the final polarization of the fermions.     We examine the sensitivity of the process e+e- -> nu nubar gamma to extra gauge bosons, Z' and W', which arise in various extensions of the standard model. The process is found to be sensitive to W' masses up to several TeV, depending on the model, the center of mass energy, and the assumed integrated luminosity. If extra gauge bosons were discovered first in other experiments, the process could also be used to measure Z' nu nubar and W' couplings. This measurement would provide information that could be used to unravel the underlying theory, complementary to measurements at the Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 45 pages, 17 postscript figures, Latex.     We examine the sensitivity of the process e gamma to nu q +X to W' bosons which arise in various extensions of the standard model. We consider photon spectra from both the Weizsacker Williams process and from a backscattered laser. The process is found to be sensitive to W' masses up to several TeV, depending on the model, the center of mass energy, the integrated luminosity, and assumptions regarding systematic errors. If extra gauge bosons were discovered first in other experiments, the process could also be used to measure W' couplings.     An accurate nucleon-nucleon potential with charge-independence breaking

    We present a new high-quality nucleon-nucleon potential with explicit charge dependence and charge asymmetry, which we designate Argonne v18v_{18}. The model has a charge-independent part with fourteen operator components that is an updated version of the Argonne v14v_{14} potential. Three additional charge-dependent and one charge-asymmetric operators are added, along with a complete electromagnetic interaction. The potential has been fit directly to the Nijmegen pppp and npnp scattering data base, low-energy nnnn scattering parameters, and deuteron binding energy. With 40 adjustable parameters it gives a χ2\chi^{2} per datum of 1.09 for 4301 pppp and npnp data in the range 0--350 MeV.Comment: 36 pages, PHY-7742-TH-9

    Search for resonances in the mass distribution of jet pairs with one or two jets identified as b-jets in proton–proton collisions at √s=13TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Searches for high-mass resonances in the dijet invariant mass spectrum with one or two jets identi-fied as b-jets are performed using an integrated luminosity of 3.2fb−1of proton–proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of √s=13TeVrecorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Noevidence of anomalous phenomena is observed in the data, which are used to exclude, at 95%credibility level, excited b∗quarks with masses from 1.1TeVto 2.1TeVand leptophobic Z bosons with masses from 1.1TeVto 1.5TeV. Contributions of a Gaussian signal shape with effective cross sections ranging from approximately 0.4 to 0.001pb are also excluded in the mass range 1.5–5.0TeV

    Force-interactive patterns in immigration discourse: A Cognitive Linguistic approach to CDA

So far, however, this space has been reserved almost exclusively for critical metaphor studies where Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory has provided the lens through which otherwise naturalized or opaque ideological patterns in text and conceptualization can be detected. Yet Cognitive Linguistics consists of much more than Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Its efficacy for critical discourse analysis (CDA) may therefore extend beyond critical metaphor studies. In this article, I propose that Talmy's (1988, 2000) theory of Force-Dynamics in particular represents a further, useful framework for the Cognitive Linguistic approach to CDA. Using this analytical framework, then, I identify some of the indicators of, and demonstrate the ideological qualities of, force-dynamic conceptualizations in immigration discourse.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
