    Complementary and Alternative Therapies Education for High-Risk Women

    Purpose. Women with substance use disorder (SUD) are considered high-risk and face many barriers accessing health care. One common barrier is distrust of the traditional medical model. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) provides these women an opportunity to build self-care skills and resiliency. This project was designed to address the complex healthcare needs of mothers with SUD by adding CAM modules to a current self-care skills curriculum. Methods. To assess feasibility, a pilot program was created for a residential facility in Burlington, Vermont. The pilot program consisted of weekly 60 minute sessions over the course of 10 weeks. There were five modules: an introduction to CAM; mindfulness practices; yoga; sleep hygiene; and herbal remedies. The modules were delivered as practice sessions and power point presentations for continued use within the facility’s curriculum. This project is defined as a quality improvement project. Data consisted of pre and post-implementation written surveys, and verbal and observational data collected from participants and staff during module implementation. Written surveys were anonymous. Following the pilot program, the CAM modules were modified based on collected data. Results. Data demonstrated that women who participated had interest in learning CAM therapies. Verbal and observational data demonstrated integration of these therapies and techniques into aspects of daily life. The staff reported continued success of the program and ongoing modifications to the course materials as the program develops. Conclusions. Providing CAM education to high-risk women in a residential setting is beneficial to the development of self-care skills

    Search for jet extinction in the inclusive jet-pT spectrum from proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published articles title, journal citation, and DOI.The first search at the LHC for the extinction of QCD jet production is presented, using data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.7  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The extinction model studied in this analysis is motivated by the search for signatures of strong gravity at the TeV scale (terascale gravity) and assumes the existence of string couplings in the strong-coupling limit. In this limit, the string model predicts the suppression of all high-transverse-momentum standard model processes, including jet production, beyond a certain energy scale. To test this prediction, the measured transverse-momentum spectrum is compared to the theoretical prediction of the standard model. No significant deficit of events is found at high transverse momentum. A 95% confidence level lower limit of 3.3 TeV is set on the extinction mass scale

    Searches for electroweak neutralino and chargino production in channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons in pp collisions at 8 TeV

    Searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) are presented based on the electroweak pair production of neutralinos and charginos, leading to decay channels with Higgs, Z, and W bosons and undetected lightest SUSY particles (LSPs). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 19.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected in 2012 with the CMS detector at the LHC. The main emphasis is neutralino pair production in which each neutralino decays either to a Higgs boson (h) and an LSP or to a Z boson and an LSP, leading to hh, hZ, and ZZ states with missing transverse energy (E-T(miss)). A second aspect is chargino-neutralino pair production, leading to hW states with E-T(miss). The decays of a Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair, to a photon pair, and to final states with leptons are considered in conjunction with hadronic and leptonic decay modes of the Z and W bosons. No evidence is found for supersymmetric particles, and 95% confidence level upper limits are evaluated for the respective pair production cross sections and for neutralino and chargino mass values

    A Survey to Determine the Reliability of Dynamometer and Pinch Gauge Dial Readings Among Certified Hand Therapists

    Using a cross-sectional descriptive study design, surveys were mailed to 200 randomly selected certified hand therapists of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) to determine how they document analog dynamometer and pinch gauge dial readings. Three different needle settings for the dynamometer and pinch gauge were presented in picture format. For each instrument, one needle setting was just above a gauge marker, one was just below a gauge marker, and one was set exactly between two gauge markers. A total of 126out of 200 surveys were returned for a participation rate of 63%. For the dynamometer readings, therapists estimated the exact strength reading between the two gauge markers 78.3% of the time. For the pinch gauge readings, therapists rounded to the nearest dial marker 76.5% of the time when the needle was just above or just below a dial marker and 61.9% of the time they estimated the reading when the needle was placed exactly between two dial markers

    In silico structural study of random amino acid sequence proteins not present in nature

    The three-dimensional structures of a set of 'never born proteins' (NBP, random amino acid sequence proteins with no significant homology with known proteins) were predicted using two methods: Rosetta and the one based on the 'fuzzy-oil-drop' (FOD) model. More than 3000 different random amino acid sequences have been generated, filtered against the non redundant protein sequence data base, to remove sequences with significant homology with known proteins, and subjected to three-dimensional structure prediction. Comparison between Rosetta and FOD predictions allowed to select the ten top (highest structural similarity) and the ten bottom (the lowest structural similarity) structures from the ranking list organized according to the RMS-D value. The selected structures were taken for detailed analysis to define the scale of structural accordance and discrepancy between the two methods. The structural similarity measurements revealed discrepancies between structures generated on the basis of the two methods. Their potential biological function appeared to be quite different as well. The ten bottom structures appeared to be 'unfoldable' for the FOD model. Some aspects of the general characteristics of the NBPs are also discussed.
