    E-commerce trade in invasive plants

    Biological invasions are a major concern in conservation, especially because global transport of species is still increasing rapidly. Conservationists hope to anticipate and thus prevent future invasions by identifying and regulating potentially invasive species through species risk assessments and international trade regulations. Among many introduction pathways of non-native species, horticulture is a particularly important driver of plant invasions. In recent decades, the horticultural industry expanded globally and changed structurally through the emergence of new distribution channels, including internet trade (e-commerce). Using an automated search algorithm, we surveyed, on a daily basis, e-commerce trade on 10 major online auction sites (including eBay) of approximately three-fifths of the world’s spermatophyte flora. Many recognized invasive plant species (>500 species) (i.e., species associated with ecological or socio-economic problems) were traded daily worldwide on the internet. A markedly higher proportion of invasive than non-invasive species were available online. Typically, for a particular plant family, 30–80% of recognized invasive species were detected on an auction site, but only a few percentages of all species in the plant family were detected on a site. Families that were more traded had a higher proportion of invasive species than families that were less traded. For woody species, there was a significant positive relationship between the number of regions where a species was sold and the number of regions where it was invasive. Our results indicate that biosecurity is not effectively regulating online plant trade. In the future, automated monitoring of e-commerce may help prevent the spread of invasive species, provide information on emerging trade connectivity across national borders, and be used in horizon scanning exercises for early detection of new species and their geographic source areas in international trade

    Tritrophic interactions follow phylogenetic escalation and climatic adaptation

    One major goal in plant evolutionary ecology is to address how and why tritrophic interactions mediated by phytochemical plant defences vary across species, space, and time. In this study, we tested three classical hypotheses about plant defences: (i) the resource-availability hypothesis, (ii) the altitudinal/elevational gradient hypothesis and (iii) the defence escalation hypothesis. For this purpose, predatory soil nematodes were challenged to hunt for root herbivores based on volatile cues from damaged or intact roots of 18 Alpine Festuca grass species adapted to distinct climatic niches spanning 2000 meters of elevation. We found that adaptation into harsh, nutrient-limited alpine environments coincided with the production of specific blends of volatiles, highly attractive for nematodes. We also found that recently-diverged taxa exposed to herbivores released higher amounts of volatiles than ancestrally-diverged species. Therefore, our model provides evidence that belowground indirect plant defences associated with tritrophic interactions have evolved under two classical hypotheses in plant ecology. While phylogenetic drivers of volatile emissions point to the defence-escalation hypothesis, plant local adaptation of indirect defences is in line with the resource availability hypothesis

    A review on the use of Hydroxyapatite-carbonaceous structure composites in bone replacement materials for strengthening purposes

    Biomedical materials constitute a vast scientific research field, which is devoted to producing medical devices which aid in enhancing human life. In this field, there is an enormous demand for long-lasting implants and bone substitutes that avoid rejection issues whilst providing favourable bioactivity, osteoconductivity and robust mechanical properties. Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based biomaterials possess a close chemical resemblance to the mineral phase of bone, which give rise to their excellent biocompatibility, so allowing for them to serve the purpose of a bone-substituting and osteoconductive scaffold. The biodegradability of HAp is low (Ksp ≈ 6.62 × 10⁻ÂčÂČ⁶) as compared to other calcium phosphates materials, however they are known for their ability to develop bone-like apatite coatings on their surface for enhanced bone bonding. Despite its favourable bone regeneration properties, restrictions on the use of pure HAp ceramics in high load-bearing applications exist due to its inherently low mechanical properties (including low strength and fracture toughness, and poor wear resistance). Recent innovations in the field of bio-composites and nanoscience have reignited the investigation of utilising different carbonaceous materials for enhancing the mechanical properties of composites, including HAp-based bio-composites. Researchers have preferred carbonaceous materials with hydroxyapatite due to their inherent biocompatibility and good structural properties. It has been demonstrated that different structures of carbonaceous material can be used to improve the fracture toughness of HAp, as they can easily serve the purpose of being a second phase reinforcement, with the resulting composite still being a biocompatible material. Nanostructured carbonaceous structures, especially those in the form of fibres and sheets, were found to be very effective in increasing the fracture toughness values of HAp. Minor addition of CNTs (3 wt.%) has resulted in a more than 200% increase in fracture toughness of hydroxyapatite-nanorods/CNTs made using spark plasma sintering.     Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from migratory birds in Southern Norway

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Borrelia burgdorferi </it>sensu lato (s.l.) are the causative agent for Lyme borreliosis (LB), the most common tick-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. Birds are considered important in the global dispersal of ticks and tick-borne pathogens through their migration. The present study is the first description of <it>B. burgdorferi </it>prevalence and genotypes in <it>Ixodes ricinus </it>ticks feeding on birds during spring and autumn migration in Norway.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>6538 migratory birds were captured and examined for ticks at Lista Bird Observatory during the spring and the autumn migration in 2008. 822 immature <it>I. ricinus </it>ticks were collected from 215 infested birds. Ticks were investigated for infection with <it>B. burgdorferi </it>s.l. by real-time PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene, and <it>B. burgdorferi </it>s.l. were thereafter genotyped by melting curve analysis after real-time PCR amplification of the <it>hbb </it>gene, or by direct sequencing of the PCR amplicon generated from the <it>rrs </it>(16S)-<it>rrl </it>(23S) intergenetic spacer.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>B. burgdorferi </it>s.l. were detected in 4.4% of the ticks. The most prevalent <it>B. burgdorferi </it>genospecies identified were <it>B. garinii </it>(77.8%), followed by <it>B.valaisiana </it>(11.1%), <it>B. afzelii </it>(8.3%) and <it>B. burgdorferi </it>sensu stricto (2.8%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Infection rate in ticks and genospecies composition were similar in spring and autumn migration, however, the prevalence of ticks on birds was higher during spring migration. The study supports the notion that birds are important in the dispersal of ticks, and that they may be partly responsible for the heterogeneous distribution of <it>B. burgdorferi </it>s.l. in Europe.</p

    Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Ωb−\Omega_b^- baryon

    A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by LHCb at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63±963\pm9 Ωb−→Ωc0π−\Omega_b^-\to\Omega_c^0\pi^-, Ωc0→pK−K−π+\Omega_c^0\to pK^-K^-\pi^+ decays. Using the Ξb−→Ξc0π−\Xi_b^-\to\Xi_c^0\pi^-, Ξc0→pK−K−π+\Xi_c^0\to pK^-K^-\pi^+ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute lifetime of the Ωb−\Omega_b^- baryon are measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{\tau_{\Omega_b^-}}{\tau_{\Xi_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\ \tau_{\Omega_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for τΩb−\tau_{\Omega_b^-} only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, mΩb−−mΞb−m_{\Omega_b^-}-m_{\Xi_b^-}, and the corresponding Ωb−\Omega_b^- mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{\Omega_b^-}-m_{\Xi_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{\Omega_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://lhcbproject.web.cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/LHCbProjectPublic/LHCb-PAPER-2016-008.htm

    Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions in the forward region in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV

    Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions, produced in protonproton collisions at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, are studied using a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment. The signature for Bose-Einstein correlations is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of like-sign charged pions with small four-momentum difference squared. The charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the Bose-Einstein correlation parameters describing the correlation strength and the size of the emitting source is investigated, determining both the correlation radius and the chaoticity parameter. The measured correlation radius is found to increase as a function of increasing charged-particle multiplicity, while the chaoticity parameter is seen to decreas

    Observation of the Bs0→J/ψϕϕB_s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \phi \phi decay

    The Bs0→J/ψϕϕB_s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \phi \phi decay is observed in pppp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV. This is the first observation of this decay channel, with a statistical significance of 15 standard deviations. The mass of the Bs0B_s^0 meson is measured to be 5367.08 ± 0.38 ± 0.155367.08\,\pm \,0.38\,\pm\, 0.15 MeV/c2^2. The branching fraction ratio B(Bs0→J/ψϕϕ)/B(Bs0→J/ψϕ)\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \phi \phi)/\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow J/\psi \phi) is measured to be 0.0115\,\pm\, 0.0012\, ^{+0.0005}_{-0.0009}. In both cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.     Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle Îł\gamma from Dalitz plot analysis of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ \pi^- decays

    The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ \pi^- decays, with D→K+π−D \to K^+ \pi^-, K+K−K^+ K^- and π+π−\pi^+ \pi^-. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle Îł\gamma of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay are determined for the first time.     Search for hidden-sector bosons in B0 ⁣→K∗0ÎŒ+Ό−B^0 \!\to K^{*0}\mu^+\mu^- decays

    A search is presented for hidden-sector bosons, χ\chi, produced in the decay B0 ⁣→K∗(892)0χ{B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0\chi}, with K∗(892)0 ⁣→K+π−K^*(892)^0\!\to K^{+}\pi^{-} and Ï‡â€‰âŁâ†’ÎŒ+Ό−\chi\!\to\mu^+\mu^-. The search is performed using pppp-collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector. No significant signal is observed in the accessible mass range 214≀m(χ)≀4350214 \leq m({\chi}) \leq 4350 MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product B(B0 ⁣→K∗(892)0χ)×B(Ï‡â€‰âŁâ†’ÎŒ+Ό−)\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0\chi)\times\mathcal{B}(\chi\!\to\mu^+\mu^-) as a function of the mass and lifetime of the χ\chi boson.
