    Lithium Borate Ionic Liquids as Single-Component Electrolytes for Batteries

    Current electrolytes for lithium batteries are usually composed of at least two chemical compounds, an organic solvent such as a cyclic carbonate and a lithium salt such as LiPF6. Here, the concept of using a single-component electrolyte is demonstrated in lithium batteries based on new lithium borate ionic liquids at room temperature. The design concept of this class of lithium ionic liquids (LiILs) is based on an asymmetrically substituted central tetracoordinate boron atom with oligoethylene glycol groups, fluorinated electron-attracting groups, and one alkane group. The optimized borateLi+ LiILs show a high ionic conductivity value of >10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C, high lithium transference numbers ( = 0.4 – 0.5) and electrochemical stability (>4 V). Some of the LiILs present high compatibility with lithium-metal electrodes showing stable polarization profiles in platting/stripping tests. The selected LiIL is investigated as single-component electrolytes in lithium-metal battery cells showing discharge capacity values in Li0/LiIL/lithium–iron phosphate and Li0/LiIL/lithium titanate cells of 124 and 75 mAh g−1, respectively, at a C-rate of 0.2 C and 65 °C with low-capacity loss.This work was funded and supported by a Grant for Basque Government through grant IT1309-19, and European Commission's funded Marie Skłodowska–Curie project POLYTE-EID (Project No. 765828) and Spanish MCIN/AEI/PID2020-119026GB-I00.     Antibiotic prescribing for endodontic infections: a survey of dental students in Italy

    Aim To determine the knowledge of final year undergraduate students attending Italian universities on the appropriate use of systemic antibiotics for endodontic infections. Methodology Final year dental students from twenty Italian universities completed a one-page questionnaire on antibiotic use for the treatment of endodontic infections. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results A total of three hundred and three students completed the questionnaire. The average duration of antibiotic prescription proposed by respondents was 5.48 1.06 days. Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid was the first-choice antibiotic (85.2%) followed by amoxicillin alone (13.5%), azithromycin (1.0%) and clarithromycin (0.3%), for patients not allergic to penicillin. Clarithromycin was the first-choice drug for patients with a penicillin allergy (56.1%), followed from azithromycin (31.7%), clindamycin (11.9%) and levofloxacin (0.3%). Alveolar abscess with systemic manifestations was reported as the principal reason to prescribe antibiotics (97.7%) followed by the same condition without systemic manifestations (85.5%). For the scenario of irreversible pulpitis, 5% of students considered antibiotics necessary. Almost 52% of students would prescribe antibiotics for apical acute periodontitis; 29.7% would prescribe antibiotics for chronic apical periodontitis with sinus tract, and 13.5% indicated these drugs for chronic apical periodontitis without sinus tract. Conclusions The results demonstrate that it is necessary to improve the knowledge of Italian students on antibiotics and indications for their use in endodontics

    Stabilized municipal sewage sludge addition to improve properties of an acid mine soil for plant growth

    Purpose: Degraded soils, such as those encountered in areas of mine activities, need to be ameliorated by liming to correct soil acidity and by addition of organic inputs to improve soil properties and fertility. Materials and methods: Non-amended mine soil and soil amended with stabilized sewage sludge were incubated for 45 days. Soil physicochemical and biological indicators were periodically measured along incubation and other enzyme activities at the end of incubation. In improved soils, a study of plant development in 250-g pots was carried out with three vegetal species: tomato, rye grass and ahipa. Germination and mortality rates, biomass production and photosynthetic pigments were measured. Results and discussion: Soil incubation with sewage sludge slightly increased soil pH and led to an enhancement of soil electrical conductivity, organic carbon and dehydrogenase activity, especially for the higher doses (5 and 10%). However soil respiration was more promoted with the 2% dose, pointing to a possible toxic effect of the sludge. At the end of incubation, physicochemical and biological properties were in general enhanced. Biomass production was improved in tomato and rye grass by sewage sludge addition (more at the 2% dose), whilst ahipa growth was not affected by sewage sludge treatments. Tomato mortality reached 73% with high sludge doses (10%). Conclusions: According to this set of parameters, amendment with sewage sludge of a limed acid mine soil would be considered as a good strategy for soil amelioration in view of plant establishment and development.Junta de Andalucía P10-RNM581

    Vasodilatory properties of Solanum crispum Ruiz & Pav. a South American native plant

    Solanum crispum Ruiz & Pav. (S. crispum) is a southern South American native plant that is usually used in traditional medicine for the treatment of symptoms associated with both, acute and chronic ailments. Enema and infusion of leaves and stems are used to treat fever, headache, inflammation and hypertension. In this study, we aim to assess the vasoactive effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of S. crispum on isolated rat aorta rings. The hydroalcoholic extract of S. crispum induced a vasodilatory effect (42.6 ± 4.1%) in aortic rings precontracted with phenylephrine (0.1 μM). The aortic relaxation was largely endothelium-dependent and mediated by nitric oxide (NO). The endothelium- and NO-dependence was demonstrated by a drastic fall in the dilatation induced by the extract when the endothelium was removed (10.6 ± 2.3%) and when nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was inhibited (12.3 ± 2.5%) by nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA). This result supports the popular use of S. crispum in the treatment of hypertension that may be due, at least in part, to the vasodilator effect of one o more compounds present in their leaves and stems. Further studies should be performed to clarify this phenomenon

    Yeasts associated with the production of distilled alcoholic beverages

    Distilled alcoholic beverages are produced firstly by fermenting sugars emanating from cereal starches (in the case of whiskies), sucrose-rich plants (in the case of rums), fructooligosaccharide-rich plants (in the case of tequila) or from fruits (in the case of brandies). Traditionally, such fermentations were conducted in a spontaneous fashion, relying on indigenous microbiota, including wild yeasts. In modern practices, selected strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are employed to produce high levels of ethanol together with numerous secondary metabolites (eg. higher alcohols, esters, carbonyls etc.) which greatly influence the final flavour and aroma characteristics of spirits following distillation of the fermented wash. Therefore, distillers, like winemakers, must carefully choose their yeast strain which will be very important in providing the alcohol content and the sensory profiles of spirit beverages.     VAMOS: a Pathfinder for the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory

    VAMOS was a prototype detector built in 2011 at an altitude of 4100m a.s.l. in the state of Puebla, Mexico. The aim of VAMOS was to finalize the design, construction techniques and data acquisition system of the HAWC observatory. HAWC is an air-shower array currently under construction at the same site of VAMOS with the purpose to study the TeV sky. The VAMOS setup included six water Cherenkov detectors and two different data acquisition systems. It was in operation between October 2011 and May 2012 with an average live time of 30%. Besides the scientific verification purposes, the eight months of data were used to obtain the results presented in this paper: the detector response to the Forbush decrease of March 2012, and the analysis of possible emission, at energies above 30 GeV, for long gamma-ray bursts GRB111016B and GRB120328B.Comment: Accepted for pubblication in Astroparticle Physics Journal (20 pages, 10 figures).     Pseudoprogression and hyperprogression secondary to immunotherapy in lung cancer

    BACKGROUND: The treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has undergone changes that have improved the prognosis of patients. With the advent of immunotherapy, it has been possible to prolong significantly the overall and progression-free survival as well as quality of life. Nevertheless, its use represents clinical challenges which may turn into adverse events, such as progression and pseudo-progression, which are uncontrolled and often deleterious immune responses that simulate tumoral progression, generate worsening of symptoms and performance status of patients and even may lead to non-cancer related death of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed 128 records (clinical trials, reports, meta-analyses) in order to provide an updated review of the treatment of NSCLC, current definitions proposed for pseudo and hyperprogression (which are not homogeneous so far), incidence, theories about their physiopathogenesis, importance of making a judicious diagnostic workup, imaging criteria as well as biochemical markers in order to predict their appearance, concluding with a brief discussion about the topic addressed. CONCLUSIONS: Since there is no definition or standardized diagnostic and imaging criteria, these entities are a topic of major interest in the area of oncologic immunotherapy, for which the following review has been generated

    Evidence for t\bar{t}\gamma Production and Measurement of \sigma_t\bar{t}\gamma / \sigma_t\bar{t}

    Using data corresponding to 6.0/fb of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector, we present a cross section measurement of top-quark pair production with an additional radiated photon. The events are selected by looking for a lepton, a photon, significant transverse momentum imbalance, large total transverse energy, and three or more jets, with at least one identified as containing a b quark. The ttbar+photon sample requires the photon to have 10 GeV or more of transverse energy, and to be in the central region. Using an event selection optimized for the ttbar+photon candidate sample we measure the production cross section of, and the ratio of cross sections of the two samples. Control samples in the dilepton+photon and lepton+photon+\met, channels are constructed to aid in decay product identification and background measurements. We observe 30 ttbar+photon candidate events compared to the standard model expectation of 26.9 +/- 3.4 events. We measure the ttbar+photon cross section to be 0.18+0.08 pb, and the ratio of the cross section of ttbar+photon to ttbar to be 0.024 +/- 0.009. Assuming no ttbar+photon production, we observe a probability of 0.0015 of the background events alone producing 30 events or more, corresponding to 3.0 standard deviations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    On the sensitivity of the HAWC observatory to gamma-ray bursts

    We present the sensitivity of HAWC to Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). HAWC is a very high-energy gamma-ray observatory currently under construction in Mexico at an altitude of 4100 m. It will observe atmospheric air showers via the water Cherenkov method. HAWC will consist of 300 large water tanks instrumented with 4 photomultipliers each. HAWC has two data acquisition (DAQ) systems. The main DAQ system reads out coincident signals in the tanks and reconstructs the direction and energy of individual atmospheric showers. The scaler DAQ counts the hits in each photomultiplier tube (PMT) in the detector and searches for a statistical excess over the noise of all PMTs. We show that HAWC has a realistic opportunity to observe the high-energy power law components of GRBs that extend at least up to 30 GeV, as it has been observed by Fermi LAT. The two DAQ systems have an energy threshold that is low enough to observe events similar to GRB 090510 and GRB 090902b with the characteristics observed by Fermi LAT. HAWC will provide information about the high-energy spectra of GRBs which in turn could help to understanding about e-pair attenuation in GRB jets, extragalactic background light absorption, as well as establishing the highest energy to which GRBs accelerate particles
