    Does limited access to mortgage debt explain why young adults live with their parents?

    Young adults leave their parents' home at a higher rate in Northern Europe and the United States than in Southern Europe, with broad implications on labor mobility, intergenerational sharing of resources and on fertility. This paper assesses if differences in household structure can be traced back to restricted access to credit for the young. To study the causal impact of getting a loan on the probability of "leaving the nest", we exploit two reforms of a Portuguese program that subsidized interest rate on mortgages signed by low- and medium- income young adults. Using a unique dataset that merges a Labor Force Survey with administrative debt records, we estimate that getting a mortgage loan increases the rate of leaving home by between 31 and 54 percentage points. We combine those estimates with an European household panel to document that if our preferred estimates held for all countries, differential use of credit markets would explain between 16% and 20% of the North-South differences in home leaving.     Valor de la resonancia magnética en el diagnóstico de las lesiones de rodilla

    Para determinar la eficacia diagnóstica de la resonancia magnética en las lesiones de la rodilla se han estudiado 60 pacientes tomando como referencia los hallazgos obtenidos en la artroscopia. Se han estudiado la sensibilidad, especificidad, valor predictivo positivo, valor predictivo negativo y valor predictivo global respecto a ambos meniscos, ligamentos cruzados y lesiones cartilaginosas. Para los meniscos la sensibilidad ha sido del 95%, la especificidad del 85% y el valor predictivo global del 89%; para el LCA la sensibilidad ha sido del 75%, la especificidad del 94% y el valor predictivo del 90%, y para las lesiones del cartílago la sensibilidad ha sido del 54%, la especificidad del 100% y el valor predictivo del 82%.In order to evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of knee patology, the MRI charts of 60 patients were reviewed, considering as a reference the findings of the arthroscopy. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive positive value, predictive negative value and predictive global value of the technique were determined. The results showed a sensitivity of 95%, a specificity of 85% and a predictive global value of 89% for the meniscus. A sensitivity of 75%, a specificity of 94% and a predictive global value of 90% for the anterior cruciate ligament. The articular cartilage abnormalities had a sensitivity of 54% a specificity of 100% and a predictive global value of 82%

    First report on natural infection with Leishmania infantum in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) in Spain

    A pet domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) with a papular lesion involving the right pinna was diagnosed with chronic pyogranulomatous dermatitis by histopathologic examination. Intralesional, intracytoplasmic oval microorganisms compatible with Leishmania spp. or Histoplasma spp. were observed in macrophages and multinucleate giant cells. Leishmania infantum (L. infantum) infection was diagnosed by PCR, culture in Novy-MacNeal-Nicolle medium, and immunohistochemistry. Abnormal clinicopathological results included increased alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum gamma glutamyl transferase and polyclonal gammpathy. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence antibody test and western blot using L. infantum antigen. Immunoreactivity against the 16 kDa specific L. infantum antigen fraction was observed by western blot. PCR performed in blood samples obtained from this patient after positive parasite isolation detected L. infantum DNA. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first diagnosis and isolation of L. infantum in a domestic ferret naturally infected in an endemic region (Spain) where canine and feline leishmaniosis is frequently detected. According to these findings, ferrets should be included as potential reservoir hosts of L. infantum. Future investigations should analyze the epidemiological role of ferrets in L. infantum infection including the prevalence of infection

    Electrokinetic flushing with surrounding electrode arrangements for the remediation of soils that are polluted with 2,4-D: A case study in a pilot plant

    This work aimed to evaluate electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF) technologies for the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from spiked soils using an electrode configuration consisting of one cathode surrounded by six anodes (1c6a) and one anode surrounded by 6 cathodes (1a6c). Experiments were conducted for over one month in a bench-scale set-up (175 dm3 of capacity) that was completely automated and operated at a constant electric field (1.0 V cm− 1). The electrical current, temperature, pH, moisture and pollutant concentration in electrolyte wells were monitored daily, and at the end of the experiments, an in-depth sectioned analysis of the complete soil section (post-mortem analysis) was conducted. Despite the geometric similarity, the two strategies led to very different results mainly in terms of water and herbicide mobilization, whereas pH and conductivity do not depend strongly on the electrode configuration. The volume of water extracted from cathodes with 1a6c is seven times higher than that of the 1c6a strategy. Herbicide was transported to the anode wells by electromigration and then dragged toward the cathode wells by electro-osmotic fluxes, with the first process being much more important. The configuration 1c6a was the most efficient and attained a transfer of 70% of the herbicide contained in the soil to flushing water in 35 days. These results outperform those obtained by the configuration 1a6c, for which less than 8% of the herbicide was transferred to flushing fluids in a much longer time (58 days)

    Spermatozoa Obtained From Alpaca vas deferens. Effects of Seminal Plasma Added at Post-thawing

    The viscous seminal plasma (SP) is currently a major impediment to the handling of ejaculate and the development of some biotechnologies in South American camelids. The vas deferens-collected spermatozoa of alpacas is a useful technique to avoid this problem. On the other hand, SP contains a large protein component that has been implicated in the function of spermatozoa within the female reproductive tract. In this sense, the low fertility achieved using transcervical insemination with frozen-thawed spermatozoa in alpacas could be improved by adding SP. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the whole SP on some in vitro parameters of alpaca spermatozoa after the freezing-thawing-process and the fertility after artificial insemination. It would contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between thawed sperm cells and SP. Spermatozoa were obtained by surgically diverted vas deferens. The samples were diluted with a Tris-based extender, packaged in straws, and frozen. At thawing, each straw was divided into two post-thawing conditions: with the addition of 10% of PBS (control) or with 10% SP (treatment). The sperm cells were evaluated using dynamic parameters, sperm cell morphology, and morphometry. Fertility was assessed by an artificial insemination trial. All in vitro parameters were analyzed by ANOVA. A heterogeneity test was scheduled for the fertility trial. After the freezing-thawing process, motility and plasma membrane functionality was improved when SP was added. No differences were found for post-thaw viability between the control and treatment samples. The percentage of normal cells was higher with SP at post-thawing, and a decrease of the presence of bent tailed spermatozoa with a droplet in the SP group was observed. The length of the head spermatozoa was 3.4% higher in the samples with PBS compared to those in which SP was added. Females pregnant at day 25 post-insemination were 0/12 (with SP inside the straw) and 1/10 (without SP inside the straw). In conclusion, the presence of 10% SP at post-thawing improves sperm cells' motility, functionality, and morphology, indicating that it would be beneficial to improve the frozen-thawed alpaca's physiology spermatozoa. More fertility trials must be developed to increase this knowledge

    Exploring the embryonic development of upper beak in Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797: New findings and implications for age estimation

    The beak of cephalopods (in particular octopods, where statoliths are not suitable) is a useful tool for age estimation and the aging method provides essential information on cephalopod growth and life cycles. These parameters are valuable in the assessment of population dynamics and stock management. The embryonic development of cephalopod beaks is poorly known. The presence of pre-hatching increments on the reading areas (rostrum and lateral walls) is unclear and there are no data on temperature influence. In this study, egg clusters of Octopus vulgaris were reared at 16, 19, 21, 23, and 26 °C. The extracted upper jaws were observed in order to validate the age of first daily increment formation, assessing the accuracy of age inferred from the two reading areas. Jaw dimensions were also measured in order to explore the development at different temperature conditions. The growth rate was calculated for beaks of rearing condition 21 °C, and the overall dimensions were compared among all incubation temperatures. Three ad hoc developmental stages are proposed for the upper beak of O. vulgaris embryos. Increments on lateral walls appear during the second phase, whereas the first increment on the rostrum is visible only at hatching. Consequently, only the accuracy of age inferred from the rostrum surface is confirmed for the early stages. The growth rate of the rostrum region accounted for a drop in growth during the third phase. Conversely, the growth rate increased until hatching in lateral walls, suggesting that the heterogeneity of the growth rate could be due to the different role played by the beak areas. Temperature influenced beaks in terms of overall size, as embryos reared at a warm temperature (23 °C) were smaller than the others. These results confirm that the incubation environment could alter hatchling characteristics thus affecting the recruitment conditions.Postprint1,58

    Role of targeted therapies in rheumatic patients on COVID-19 outcomes: Results from the COVIDSER study

    Objectives To analyse the effect of targeted therapies, either biological (b) disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), targeted synthetic (ts) DMARDs and other factors (demographics, comorbidities or COVID-19 symptoms) on the risk of COVID-19 related hospitalisation in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Methods The COVIDSER study is an observational cohort including 7782 patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate ORs and 95% CIs of hospitalisation. Antirheumatic medication taken immediately prior to infection, demographic characteristics, rheumatic disease diagnosis, comorbidities and COVID-19 symptoms were analysed. Results A total of 426 cases of symptomatic COVID-19 from 1 March 2020 to 13 April 2021 were included in the analyses: 106 (24.9%) were hospitalised and 19 (4.4%) died. In multivariate-adjusted models, bDMARDs and tsDMARDs in combination were not associated with hospitalisation compared with conventional synthetic DMARDs (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.24 to 1.25 of b/tsDMARDs, p=0.15). Tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNF-i) were associated with a reduced likelihood of hospitalisation (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.12 to 0.82, p=0.018), whereas rituximab showed a tendency to an increased risk of hospitalisation (OR 4.85, 95% CI 0.86 to 27.2). Glucocorticoid use was not associated with hospitalisation (OR 1.69, 95% CI 0.81 to 3.55). A mix of sociodemographic factors, comorbidities and COVID-19 symptoms contribute to patients'' hospitalisation. Conclusions The use of targeted therapies as a group is not associated with COVID-19 severity, except for rituximab, which shows a trend towards an increased risk of hospitalisation, while TNF-i was associated with decreased odds of hospitalisation in patients with rheumatic disease. Other factors like age, male gender, comorbidities and COVID-19 symptoms do play a role.

    Análisis de las políticas de bioeconomía circular en Europa. Un estudio comparativo en regiones del centro/sur y este de Europa

    En la última década la bioeconomía circular (BEC) está apareciendo en la agenda política cada vez con más intensidad, tanto a nivel internacional y comunitario, como a nivel nacional y regional. En el presente trabajo se realiza un análisis comparativo de las estrategias relativas a la BEC en una selección de regiones (Flandes, Andalucía, Baden-Württemberg, Pays de la Loire y Mazovia) y países (Italia, Letonia y Reino Unido) de Europa, con el objetivo de identificar aspectos comunes y específicos en cada caso. El criterio utilizado para la selección de casos de estudio fue que la región o país presentase una estrategia de bioeconomía aprobada [a fecha 1/5/2021] y que incluyese un compromiso presupuestario para su implementación. La selección incluye la práctica totalidad de los casos encontrados a nivel europeo que cumplen con este criterio. Del análisis se puede deducir lo que sería una estrategia “tipo”, la cual estaría impulsada por la administración pública, implicaría a un amplio espectro de sectores (especialmente sector primario y agroindustrial), y emplearía una variedad de instrumentos de política donde destacarían las acciones de comunicación y concienciación, educación y formación de los trabajadores y empresarios, incentivos positivos (p. ej., ayudas a la I+D+i), asistencia técnica y de coordinación de iniciativas y simplificación normativa.El trabajo se ha realizado en el marco del proyecto europeo POWER4BIO (https://power4bio.eu; GA 818351)

    High intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe

    The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ− beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt magnetized iron neutrino detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular He6 and Ne18, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive

    Spanish adaptation and validation of the empowerment of parents in the intensive care-neonatology (EMPATHIC-N) questionnaire

    Introduction Parental satisfaction is rarely measured in the neonatal intensive care unit due to a lack of specific assessment tools. The Empowerment of Parents in The Intensive Care-Neonatology (EMPATHIC-N) questionnaire is an instrument to assess satisfaction in relation to family-centred care that has been validated in several countries, but not Spain. Objectives To perform the translation and cultural adaptation of the EMPATHIC-N to Spanish followed by its validation for the purpose of assessing satisfaction in parents with children admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Material and methods The questionnaire first underwent forward and backward translation and transcultural adaptation by a panel of experts through a standardized process based on the Delphi method, followed by a pilot study in 8 parents and then a cross-sectional study in the neonatal intensive care unit of a tertiary care hospital to assess the reliability and converging validity of the Spanish version. Results The study proved the comprehensibility, validity, feasibility, applicability and usefulness of the Spanish version of the EMPATHIC-N in the field of paediatric health after being evaluated by 19 professionals and 60 parents. The content validity was found to be excellent (0.93). The reliability and convergent validity of the Spanish version of the EMPHATIC-N was analysed in a sample of 65 completed questionnaires. The Cronbach α for each domain was greater than 0.7, indicating a high internal consistency. We assessed validity by analysing the correlation of the 5 domains with the with the 4 general satisfaction items. The validity was found to be adequate (rs, 0.4−0.76; P < .01). Conclusions The Spanish version of the EMPATHIC-N questionnaire is a comprehensible, useful, valid and reliable instrument to measure satisfaction in the parents of children admitted to neonatal care units
