    The psychological experience of second-generation Somalis whose parents were forced to migrate during the civil war in the '90s

    In the 1990s, millions of Somali families were forced by a civil war to leave their homes. Over the years, other refugee communities have been researched by scholars in light of intergenerational trauma (Sangalang & Vang, 2017). Second-generation Somali psychological experiences are multi-layered and not reduced to a directional process of intergenerational trauma because their lived experiences are also situated in the post-colonial world. This study explores the psychological experience by including psychological distress experienced and strengths displayed by second-generation Somalis whose parents were forced to migrate to the United Kingdom during the conflict. Understanding the psychological needs of the second-generation in forced migration supports the move away from the individualised model to the historical and familial context. The study adopts a constructivist epistemology and Africana phenomenological approach and uses interpretative phenomenological analysis (Smith, 2009) to reveal the psychological experience. There are four superordinate themes in this study, which include: emotional responses to the forced migration background of parents, ‘flipping hats’ the emotional depth of racism and belonging, ‘hush and silence’ hiding the self and strength and togetherness despite the rift across the community. The second-generation Somalis’ psychological experience is intersubjective. This study reveals the dynamic process of the second-generation sense of self while relating to and experiencing the oppression and suffering of their parents'. This study aims to contribute to the field of applied psychology and counselling psychology by elucidating the subjective experience of second-generation Somalis in order to inform theory and practice regarding this specific population. The study’s findings also contribute new information to the debate on the future generations of refugee families and mental health to develop appropriate community services for their needs

    Decomposition and nutrient release patterns of Pueraria phaseoloides, Flemingia macrophylla and Chromolaena odorata leaf residues in tropical land use systems

    The study determined the decomposition and nutrient release patterns of Pueraria phaseoloides, Flemingia macrophylla and Chromolaena odorata leaf residues in young secondary forest and bush land use systems atMfou, southern Cameroon. Residue mass loss after incubating fresh leaves for 120 days was C. odorata > P. phaseoloides > F. macrophylla. Mean weekly loss rates were 4.5, 3.9 and 2.8 per cent for C. odorata, P.phaseoloides and F. macrophylla, respectively. Across residue types, leaf mass loss was greater in the young secondary forest than in the bush land use. Soil texture and soil chemical properties were not correlated to leafmass loss. Except for N, releases of P, K, Ca and Mg were of the order C. odorata ³ P. phaseoloides > F. macrophylla. Proportions of K released from the leaf residues were greater than those for the other nutrients.Half of the K was released within the first 7 weeks after incubation for C. odorata and P. phaseoloides. Among the land uses, release of K in the forest was 1.8 times faster than in the bush. The slowest releases, irrespective of type of leaf residue, were in Ca and Mg. The study concluded that among the planted fallows, Pueraria phaseoloides had the greatest rate of nutrient release. It could, therefore, ensure greater nutrient availability to associated crops. The leaves of C. odorata are rich in all nutrients; hence, short-season crops could benefit from this source of nutrients if the weed is well managed

    Evaluation of the nutritional composition ofthe seeds of some selected African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa Hochst Ex. A. Rich (Harms)) accessions

    African yam bean (AYB) is an important but neglected and underutilized crop producing edible seeds and tubers. The poor awareness of the nutritional values of AYB constitutes one of the major problems limiting its utilization. This study was, therefore, carried out to determine the nutritional potentials of five accessions of African yam bean (TSs 125, TSs 116, TSs 86, TSs 69 and TSs 60) by analyzing their proximate composition and micronutrients (Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn) and Selenium (Se)). The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The results obtained showed significant (p < 0.05) variations in the proximate composition of the AYB accession. The crude protein was in the range of 21.84-23.41 %, crude fat 3.40-3.86 %, fibre 6.17- 6.76 %, carbohydrate 52.8-54.48 %, dry matter 90.42 - 90.6 %, ash 4.22 - 4.35 %, and moisture 9.4 - 9.58 %.The Se concentration varied from 312 mg/100 g in TSs 116 to 58 mg/100 g in TSs 60 while Fe ranged between 10.40 mg/100g in TSs 60 and 6.07mg/100gin TSs 86. Zinc varied between 8.83 mg/100g in TSs116 and 6.37 mg/100 g in TSs 69.TSs 116 was best accession in terms of crude protein, dry matter, ash, selenium and zinc, while TSs 60 was best in terms of iron. The study revealed AYB seeds as a food crop rich in protein, carbohydrate, fibre, selenium, iron and zinc. The genotypic variability can be exploited in developing African yam bean varieties with better qualities in terms of nutrient density.Keywords: Neglected, underutilized, nutrient-dense, micronutrient and protei

    Optimizing task- sharing in abortion care in Ghana: Stakeholder perspectives

    Ghana has made progress in expanding providers in abortion care but access to the service is still a challenge. We explored stakeholder perspectives on task- sharing in abortion care and the opportunities that exist to optimize this strategy in Ghana. We purposively sampled 12 representatives of agencies that played a key role in expanding abortion care to include midwives for key informant interviews. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and then coded for thematic analysis. Stakeholders indicated that Ghana was motivated to practice task- sharing in abortion care because unsafe abortion was contributing significantly to maternal mortality. They noted that the Ghana Health Service utilized the high maternal mortality in the country at the time, advancements in medicine, and the lack of clarity in the definition of the term - health practitioner- to work with partner nongovernmental organizations to successfully task- share abortion care to include midwives. Access, however, is still poor and provider stigma continues to contribute significantly to conscientious objection. This calls for further task- sharing in abortion care to include medical or physician assistants, community health officers, and pharmacists to ensure that more women have access to abortion care.Midwives are providing abortion care in Ghana through task- sharing; access is still limited, therefore further expansion to include physician assistants and community health nurses is needed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/156176/1/ijgo13000.pd

    COVIDiSTRESS Global Survey dataset on psychological and behavioural consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak

    This N = 173,426 social science dataset was collected through the collaborative COVIDiSTRESS Global Survey – an open science effort to improve understanding of the human experiences of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic between 30th March and 30th May, 2020. The dataset allows a cross-cultural study of psychological and behavioural responses to the Coronavirus pandemic and associated government measures like cancellation of public functions and stay at home orders implemented in many countries. The dataset contains demographic background variables as well as measures of Asian Disease Problem, perceived stress (PSS-10), availability of social provisions (SPS-10), trust in various authorities, trust in governmental measures to contain the virus (OECD trust), personality traits (BFF-15), information behaviours, agreement with the level of government intervention, and compliance with preventive measures, along with a rich pool of exploratory variables and written experiences. A global consortium from 39 countries and regions worked together to build and translate a survey with variables of shared interests, and recruited participants in 47 languages and dialects. Raw plus cleaned data and dynamic visualizations are available

The open science study was co-designed by an international consortium of researchers to investigate how psychological responses differ across countries and cultures, and how this has impacted behaviour, coping and trust in government efforts to slow the spread of the virus. Starting in March 2020, COVIDiSTRESS leveraged the convenience of unpaid online recruitment to generate public data. The objective of the present analysis is to understand relationships between psychological responses in the early months of global coronavirus restrictions and help understand how different government measures succeed or fail in changing public behaviour. There were variations between and within countries. Although Western Europeans registered as more concerned over COVID-19, more stressed, and having slightly more trust in the governments' efforts, there was no clear geographical pattern in compliance with behavioural measures. Detailed plots illustrating between-countries differences are provided. Using both traditional and Bayesian analyses, we found that individuals who worried about getting sick worked harder to protect themselves and others. However, concern about the coronavirus itself did not account for all of the variances in experienced stress during the early months of COVID-19 restrictions. More alarmingly, such stress was associated with less compliance. Further, those most concerned over the coronavirus trusted in government measures primarily where policies were strict. While concern over a disease is a source of mental distress, other factors including strictness of protective measures, social support and personal lockdown conditions must also be taken into consideration to fully appreciate the psychological impact of COVID-19 and to understand why some people fail to follow behavioural guidelines intended to protect themselves and others from infection. The Stage 1 manuscript associated with this submission received in-principle acceptance (IPA) on 18 May 2020. Nous avons déterminé la décomposition et les schémas de dégagement de nutriment du résidu foliaire de Pueraria phaseoloides,Flemingia macrophylla et Chromolaena odorata dans les systèmes d’utilisation de forêt de jeunes arbres et de terre arbustive à Mfou, au sud du Cameroun. La perte de masse résiduaire après l’incubation de feuilles fraîches pour 120 jours était C. odorata > P. phaseoloides > F.macrophylla. Les taux de perte moyen par semaine étaient 4.5, 3.9 et 2.8% respectivement pour C. odorata, P.phaseoloides et F. macrophylla. En travers de types deresidu, la perte de masse foliaire était plus élevée dans l’utilisation de forêt de jeunes arbres que dans la terrearbustive. La texture de sol et les propriétés chimiques de sol ne corrélaient pas à la perte de masse foliaire. Excepté A, les dégagements de P, K, Ca et Mg suivaient l’ordre C.odorata ≥ P. phaseoloides > F. macrophylla. Lesproportions de K dégagées de résidu foliaire étaient plusélevées que celles des autres nutriments. La moitié de Kétait dégagée dans les 7 premières semaines aprèsincubation pour C. odorata et P. phaseoloides. Parmi les utilisations de terre, le dégagement de K dans la forêt était1.8 fois plus rapide que dans la terre arbustive. Les dégagements les plus lents, indépendamment de type de résidu foliaire, étaient en Ca et Mg. L’étude a tiré la conclusion que parmi les jachères plantées, Pueraria phaseoloides, avaient les taux de dégagement de nutrimentles plus levés. Elle pourra donc assurer la disponibilité de nutriment plus élevée aux cultures associées. Les feuilles de C. odorata sont riches en tous les nutriments donc les cultures de courte période pourraient tirer des bienfaits de cette source de nutriments si la mauvaise herbe est bien maîtrisée
