Intracluster photodimerization of thymine: Size-dependent modes of cluster ion fragmentation

    Get PDF
A mechanistic investigation of the processes following ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was carried out. A set of distinct and remarkably size-dependent modes of cluster fragmentation were discovered. These modes were also identified as the main culprit for the striking mass distribution that was experimentally observed. Multiple absorption of photons played a key role in such intracluster photodimerization.open8

    Vibrational dynamics of N-H, C-D, and C = O modes in formamide

By means of heterodyned two-dimensional IR photon echo experiments on liquid formamide and isotopomers the vibrational frequency dynamics of the N-H stretch mode, the C-D mode, and the C = O mode were obtained. In each case the vibrational frequency correlation function is fitted to three exponentials representing ultrafast (few femtoseconds), intermediate (hundreds of femtoseconds), and slow (many picoseconds) correlation times. In the case of N-H there is a significant underdamped contribution to the correlation decay that was not seen in previous experiments and is attributed to hydrogen-bond librational modes. This underdamped motion is not seen in the C-D or C = O correlation functions. The motions probed by the C-D bond are generally faster than those seen by N-H and C = O, indicating that the environment of C-D interchanges more rapidly, consistent with a weaker C-D center dot center dot center dot O = C bond. The correlation decays of N-H and C = O are similar, consistent with both being involved in strong H bonding.open141

Resonant two-photon ionization and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy of jet-cooled adenine

    Get PDF
Resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques were used to obtain the electronic spectra of the jet-cooled DNA base adenine. The spectrum consisted of two bands of the n??* and ????* characters. The vibronic mixing between the two states resulted in the broad absorption whose onset was located 1100 cm -1 above the n??* origin. The presence of these electronically states revealed the presence of vibronic mixing.open12813

The impact of communication information on the perceived threat of COVID-19 and stockpiling intention

This article investigates the role of diverse nudging communication strategies on perceived threat and stockpiling intention. Across three studies, the authors examined the various effects of “nudging” on consumer behavior. Study 1 demonstrates that a commonly used picture has a stronger impact on perceived threat than a less frequently exposed picture regardless of its accuracy. Study 2 shows that the perceived threat of COVID-19, in terms of severe health consequences, is lower when using an indirect (vs. direct) explanation of the virus, as well as when reducing the amount of information about the virus. Study 3 investigates the impact of salient negative information and childhood socioeconomic status (SES). Findings reveal that negative information about deaths associated with the virus increases the level of perceived threat and stockpiling intention, especially among people of low childhood SES

This paper describe development and financial performance of cooperative in District Pelalawan among 2007 - 2008. Studies on primary and secondary cooperative in 12 sub-districts. Method in this stady use performance measuring of productivity, efficiency, growth, liquidity, and solvability of cooperative. Productivity of cooperative in Pelalawan was highly but efficiency still low. Profit and income were highly, even liquidity of cooperative very high, and solvability was good

Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
