    Experimental signatures of the quantum-classical transition in a nanomechanical oscillator modeled as a damped driven double-well problem

    We demonstrate robust and reliable signatures for the transition from quantum to classical behavior in the position probability distribution of a damped double-well system using the Qunatum State Diffusion approach to open quantum systems.     Effect of PSI-697, a novel P-selectin inhibitor, on platelet-monocyte aggregate formation in humans

    Background: Platelet activation is central to the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes. Surface expression of P‐selectin on activated platelets induces formation of platelet–monocyte aggregates and promotes vascular inflammation and thrombosis. P‐selectin antagonism may represent a novel therapeutic strategy in vascular disease. We aimed to investigate the effects of the novel P‐selectin antagonist PSI‐697 on platelet–monocyte aggregate formation in humans. Methods and Results: In a double‐blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled crossover study, healthy smokers were randomized to receive either oral PSI‐697 600 mg or matched placebo. The sequence of treatment was also randomized, with all subjects receiving both PSI‐697 and placebo. Platelet–monocyte aggregates were measured by flow cytometry at 4 and 24 hours in the presence and absence of thrombin receptor‐activating peptide (TRAP; 0.1 to 1.0 ÎŒm/L). The ex vivo addition of TRAP caused a concentration‐dependent increase in platelet–monocyte aggregates from 8.2% to 94.8% (P<0.001). At 4 and 24 hours, plasma concentrations of PSI‐697 increased to 1906 and 83 ng/mL, respectively (P<0.001). PSI‐697 had no demonstrable effect on either stimulated or unstimulated platelet–monocyte aggregates at 4 or 24 hours (P>0.05). P‐selectin‐blocking antibody (CLB‐Thromb6), but not PSI‐697, inhibited both stimulated and unstimulated platelet–monocyte aggregate formation in vitro (P<0.001). Conclusions: The novel small‐molecule P‐selectin antagonist PSI‐697 did not inhibit basal or stimulated platelet–monocyte aggregate formation in humans at the dose tested. Its clinical efficacy remains to be established

    Skeletal immaturity, rostral sparing, and disparate hip morphologies as biomechanical causes for Legg-CalvĂ©-Perthes’ disease

    Legg-CalvĂ©-Perthes' (Perthes') disease is a developmental disease of the hip joint that may result in numerous short and long term problems. The etiology of the disease remains largely unknown, but the mechanism is believed to be vascular and/or biomechanical in nature. There are several anatomical characteristics that tend to be prevalent in children with Perthes' disease, namely: skeletal immaturity, reduced height, and rostral sparing. We present an overview of the literature, summarizing the current understanding of the pathogenesis, particularly related to how the formation of the vasculature to the femoral epiphysis places children aged 5–8 at a higher risk for Perthes' disease, how skeletal immaturity and rostral sparing could increase the probability of developing Perthes' disease, and how animal models have aided our understanding of the disease. In doing so, we also explore why Perthes' disease is correlated to latitude, with populations at higher latitudes having higher incidence rates than populations closer to the Equator.     VEGF and Angiopoietin-1 Exert Opposing Effects on Cell Junctions by Regulating the Rho GEF Syx

    Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ang1 (Angiopoietin-1) have opposing effects on vascular permeability, but the molecular basis of these effects is not fully known. We report in this paper that VEGF and Ang1 regulate endothelial cell (EC) junctions by determining the localization of the RhoA-specific guanine nucleotide exchange factor Syx. Syx was recruited to junctions by members of the Crumbs polarity complex and promoted junction integrity by activating Diaphanous. VEGF caused translocation of Syx from cell junctions, promoting junction disassembly, whereas Ang1 maintained Syx at the junctions, inducing junction stabilization. The VEGF-induced translocation of Syx from EC junctions was caused by PKD1 (protein kinase D1)-mediated phosphorylation of Syx at Ser806, which reduced Syx association to its junctional anchors. In support of the pivotal role of Syx in regulating EC junctions, syx−/− mice had defective junctions, resulting in vascular leakiness, edema, and impaired heart function

    Study of Healthcare Personnel with Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses in Israel (SHIRI): study protocol

    Abstract Background The Study of Healthcare Personnel with Influenza and other Respiratory Viruses in Israel (SHIRI) prospectively follows a cohort of healthcare personnel (HCP) in two hospitals in Israel. SHIRI will describe the frequency of influenza virus infections among HCP, identify predictors of vaccine acceptance, examine how repeated influenza vaccination may modify immunogenicity, and evaluate influenza vaccine effectiveness in preventing influenza illness and missed work. Methods Cohort enrollment began in October, 2016; a second year of the study and a second wave of cohort enrollment began in June 2017. The study will run for at least 3 years and will follow approximately 2000 HCP (who are both employees and members of Clalit Health Services [CHS]) with routine direct patient contact. Eligible HCP are recruited using a stratified sampling strategy. After informed consent, participants complete a brief enrollment survey with questions about occupational responsibilities and knowledge, attitudes, and practices about influenza vaccines. Blood samples are collected at enrollment and at the end of influenza season; HCP who choose to be vaccinated contribute additional blood one month after vaccination. During the influenza season, participants receive twice-weekly short message service (SMS) messages asking them if they have acute respiratory illness or febrile illness (ARFI) symptoms. Ill participants receive follow-up SMS messages to confirm illness symptoms and duration and are asked to self-collect a nasal swab. Information on socio-economic characteristics, current and past medical conditions, medical care utilization and vaccination history is extracted from the CHS database. Information about missed work due to illness is obtained by self-report and from employee records. Respiratory specimens from self-collected nasal swabs are tested for influenza A and B viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus, and coronaviruses using validated multiplex quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays. The hemagglutination inhibition assay will be used to detect the presence of neutralizing influenza antibodies in serum. Discussion SHIRI will expand our knowledge of the burden of respiratory viral infections among HCP and the effectiveness of current and repeated annual influenza vaccination in preventing influenza illness, medical utilization, and missed workdays among HCP who are in direct contact with patients.     COVID-19 symptoms at hospital admission vary with age and sex: results from the ISARIC prospective multinational observational study

    Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≀ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≄ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men

    Study of possible Supersymmetric processes and Mini Black Hole production and comparison to background events with high transverse energy in the ATLAS experiment

    The ATLAS detector, which was installed at one of the interaction points of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has the capability to discover 'new physics' beyond the Standard Model (SM) already during its first year of operation. In this work an assessment of ATLAS capabilities regarding the detection of some 'new physics' signals is performed. In the course of this research all relevant SM background sources were produced. These sources were studied with several simulation tools and the results are compared. In the scope of these background studies, a verification procedure that relies on expected SM production rates was developed. This procedure is able to distinguish between new physics and a faked one originating in malfunctioning detector. Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the best candidates for the theory 'beyond the Standard Model'. It predicts the existence of new symmetry between bosons and fermions, and assumes a new fermion partner for each SM boson and a new boson partner for each SM fermion. A major part of the present research is the study of different SUSY scenarios and their SM background. The study is done both at the phenomenological level and at the experimental level, where ATLAS capabilities to detect the signals are assessed. A special emphasis was made on R-Parity Violating (RPV) processes, which might not manifest themselves immediately like the R-Parity Conserving (RPC) case, which is much easier to detect. Two main categories of RPV signals were studied: supersymmetric particles production through RPC process and their subsequent decay through RPV coupling, and resonating supersymmetric particle creation. Two specific resonating scenarios are studied here for the first time. Analysis methods for the various RPV signals were developed and ATLAS sensitivity was estimated. In addition, a special scenario in the RPV framework that behaves like RPC ("fake RPC") was studied. One will have to take this scenario into consideration if SUSY RPC signal is found in a certain region of the SUSY parameter space. Another possibility of physics 'beyond the SM' is the hypothesis that more dimensions exist in nature and that gravity is the only force that can propagate through them. Such scenario may lead to the production of Mini Black Holes (MBH) at the LHC. MBH are expected to decay through Hawking radiation after a very short time. The final state of such a signal will include many high-PT objects, and should be easy to detect. New particles, such as Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), might be copiously produced in the MBH decay process. It is therefore, proposed here to search for new particles among MBH decay products. A preliminary assessment of ATLAS's sensitivity to WIMP production via MBH decays is carried out. The TGC detectors, that were designed and produced mainly by the Weizmann Institute, are used both to trigger events containing energetic muons in the forward direction, and to measure their second coordinate. The Read Out Drivers (RODs) of the TGC detectors, which were also designed and constructed at the Weizmann Institute, are used to collect the information from the TGC detectors. A transmitter that is intended to check the ROD and verify its proper operation was designed as part of this research

    Inclusive and intensive performance analysis of electrical equalizers in a short-reach optical system using four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) is presented in this paper. Two equalizers are used—a feedforward equalizer and decision feedback equalizer using the least mean square algorithm. The sensitivity to cut-off frequency for the transmitter and receiver filters, fiber length and number of equalizers taps in the means of the bit error rate vs. optical input power are shown. The analysis reveals the considerable impact of the filters’ bandwidth, particularly in the receiver, on the equalizer performance. These results and their reasons are analyzed and broadly discussed
