    The UAE English Teachers’ perspectives on the multi-dimensional role of cooperative learning

    This study explores teachers’ perspectives on the role of the structured application of cooperative learning in enhancing ESL students’ learning engagement, social awareness, and cultural responsiveness. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate English teachers’ perceptions on the way cooperative learning can foster learning engagement, social awareness, cultural understanding and the application of differentiation in the ESL classroom. To answer the research questions, the researcher employed a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to gain deeper insight into the topic. The initial stage of the study involved the collection of the quantitative data from the Cooperative Learning Questionnaire (CLQ) responses of English teachers (n=200). The subsequent stage featured the collection of the qualitative data through the semi-structured interviews conducted with few participants (n=8) chosen from the initial sample of the first stage of the study. The obtained results suggest that English teachers find cooperative learning an effective teaching tool in creating learning motivation and engagement, instilling social values and cultural understanding, and facilitating the implementation of differentiated instruction. The research findings will facilitate further research on cooperative learning and differentiated instruction in the UAE. The study throws light on paramount issues in the field of cooperative learning in the English classroom, and it further provides comprehensive recommendations for refining the application of cooperative learning in terms of theory and practice

    Novel quinazoline-based sulfonamide derivative (3D) induces apoptosis in colorectal cancer by inhibiting JAK2–STAT3 pathway

    Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major worldwide health problem owing to its high prevalence and mortality rate. Developments in screening, prevention, biomarker, personalized therapies and chemotherapy have improved detection and treatment. However, despite these advances, many patients with advanced metastatic tumors still succumb to the disease. New anticancer agents are needed for treating advanced stage CRC as most of the deaths occur due to cancer metastasis. A recently developed novel sulfonamide derivative 4-((2-(4-(dimethylamino) phenyl)quinazolin-4-yl)amino)benzenesulfonamide (3D) has shown potent antitumor effect; however, the mechanism underlying the antitumor effect remains unknown. Materials and methods: 3D-mediated inhibition on cell viability was evaluated by MTT and real-time cell proliferation was measured by xCelligence RTDP instrument. Western blotting was used to measure pro-apoptotic, anti-apoptotic proteins and JAK2-STAT3 phosphorylation. Flow cytometry was used to measure ROS production and apoptosis. Results: Our study revealed that 3D treatment significantly reduced the viability of human CRC cells HT-29 and SW620. Furthermore, 3D treatment induced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human CRC cells. Confirming our observation, N-acetylcysteine significantly inhibited apoptosis. This is further evidenced by the induction of p53 and Bax; release of cytochrome c; activation of caspase-9, caspase-7 and caspase-3; and cleavage of PARP in 3D-treated cells. This compound was found to have a significant effect on the inhibition of antiapoptotic proteins Bcl2 and BclxL. The results further demonstrate that 3D inhibits JAK2–STAT3 pathway by decreasing the constitutive and IL-6-induced phosphorylation of STAT3. 3D also decreases STAT3 target genes such as cyclin D1 and survivin. Furthermore, a combination study of 3D with doxorubicin (Dox) also showed more potent effects than single treatment of Dox in the inhibition of cell viability. Conclusion: Taken together, these findings indicate that 3D induces ROS-mediated apoptosis and inhibits JAK2–STAT3 signaling in CRC

    Preserving Renal Function without Compromising Oncological Outcomes: A Comparative Study of Partial and Total Nephrectomies in T3 Stage Renal Cell Carcinoma

    The utility of partial nephrectomy (PN) in locally advanced, stage T3 renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is controversial. This retrospective study aimed to review the oncological and functional outcomes of patients with T3a RCC who underwent PN. We included all patients with pT3a stage RCC undergoing either open, laparoscopic, or robotic PN at our center between January 2015 and 2023. A Wilcoxon rank sum test was utilized to compare nephrectomy types (radical nephrectomy [RN] vs PN). Survival analysis was conducted using Kaplan–Meier plots and a log-rank test. P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. There were no significant differences in demographic characteristics between the RN and PN groups, except age (53.0 vs 6.5, respectively; P = 0.012) and body mass index (28.7 vs 34.3, respectively; P = 0.020). Furthermore, there were also no significant differences in the rates of local recurrence (P = 0.597), metastatic progression (P = 0.129), and chemotherapy use (P = 0.367) between nephrectomy types. Patient survival did not differ significantly based on the type of nephrectomy (log-rank P-value = 0.852). Together, our findings indicated that PN and RN yield near-equivalent oncological outcomes in terms of local recurrence, metastasis, and overall survival rates among pT3a RCC patients during a nearly 3-year follow-up period

    Trends in genitourinary cancer mortality in the United States: analysis of the CDC-WONDER database 1999–2020

    IntroductionSociodemographic disparities in genitourinary cancer-related mortality have been insufficiently studied, particularly across multiple cancer types. This study aimed to investigate gender, racial, and geographic disparities in mortality rates for the most common genitourinary cancers in the United States.MethodsMortality data for prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WONDER database between 1999 and 2020. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) were analyzed by year, gender, race, urban–rural status, and geographic region using a significance level of p < 0.05.ResultsOverall, AAMRs for prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer declined significantly, while testicular cancer-related mortality remained stable. Bladder and kidney cancer AAMRs were 3–4 times higher in males than females. Prostate cancer mortality was highest in black individuals/African Americans and began increasing after 2015. Bladder cancer mortality decreased significantly in White individuals, Black individuals, African Americans, and Asians/Pacific Islanders but remained stable in American Indian/Alaska Natives. Kidney cancer-related mortality was highest in White individuals but declined significantly in other races. Testicular cancer mortality increased significantly in White individuals but remained stable in Black individuals and African Americans. Genitourinary cancer mortality decreased in metropolitan areas but either increased (bladder and testicular cancer) or remained stable (kidney cancer) in non-metropolitan areas. Prostate and kidney cancer mortality was highest in the Midwest, bladder cancer in the South, and testicular cancer in the West.DiscussionSignificant sociodemographic disparities exist in the mortality trends of genitourinary cancers in the United States. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions and further research to address these disparities and improve outcomes for all populations affected by genitourinary cancers

    Novel derivative of aminobenzenesulfonamide (3c) induces apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells through ROS generation and inhibits cell migration

    Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most common type of cancer worldwide. New anti-cancer agents are needed for treating late stage colorectal cancer as most of the deaths occur due to cancer metastasis. A recently developed compound, 3c has shown to have potent antitumor effect; however the mechanism underlying the antitumor effect remains unknown. Methods: 3c-induced inhibition of proliferation was measured in the absence and presence NAC using MTT in HT-29 and SW620 cells and xCELLigence RTCA DP instrument. 3c-induced apoptotic studies were performed using flow cytometry. 3c-induced redox alterations were measured by ROS production using fluorescence plate reader and flow cytometry and mitochondrial membrane potential by flow cytometry; NADPH and GSH levels were determined by colorimetric assays. Bcl2 family protein expression and cytochrome c release and PARP activation was done by western blotting. Caspase activation was measured by ELISA. Cell migration assay was done using the real time xCELLigence RTCA DP system in SW620 cells and wound healing assay in HT-29. Results: Many anticancer therapeutics exert their effects by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we demonstrate that 3c-induced inhibition of cell proliferation is reversed by the antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine, suggesting that 3c acts via increased production of ROS in HT-29 cells. This was confirmed by the direct measurement of ROS in 3c-treated colorectal cancer cells. Additionally, treatment with 3c resulted in decreased NADPH and glutathione levels in HT-29 cells. Further, investigation of the apoptotic pathway showed increased release of cytochrome c resulting in the activation of caspase-9, which in turn activated caspase-3 and −6. 3c also (i) increased p53 and Bax expression, (ii) decreased Bcl2 and BclxL expression and (iii) induced PARP cleavage in human colorectal cancer cells. Confirming our observations, NAC significantly inhibited induction of apoptosis, ROS production, cytochrome c release and PARP cleavage. The results further demonstrate that 3c inhibits cell migration by modulating EMT markers and inhibiting TGFÎČ-induced phosphorylation of Smad2 and Samd3. Conclusions: Our findings thus demonstrate that 3c disrupts redox balance in colorectal cancer cells and support the notion that this agent may be effective for the treatment of colorectal cancer

    Middle Ordovician acritarchs and problematic organic-walled microfossils from the Saq-Hanadir transitional beds in the QSIM-801 well, Saudi Arabia

    Core samples from the QSIM-801 water well, drilled in central Saudi Arabia, cover a 93-foot interval spanning the transition between the Sajir Member of the Saq Formation, that consists mainly of sandstones of tidal sand flat environments, and the Hanadir Member of the Qasim Formation, characterized by argillaceous graptolitic mudstones, corresponding to a tidal delta front. The samples contain abundant, exceptionally well-preserved and diverse palynomorphs, which include cryptospores, acritarchs and chitinozoans, other problematic organic-walled microfossils as well as other organic particles such as cuticle-like fragments. The studied interval is biostratigraphically well constrained by the presence of chitinozoans of the formosa and pissotensis Zones of late-early to late Darriwilian age (Middle Ordovician) in the uppermost Saq Formation and Hanadir Member. The biostratigraphic age of the Sajir Member considered to span the Dapingian–Darriwilian boundary, is re-discussed based on the results herein. The uppermost part of the Sajir Member yielded the ichnofossil, Phycodes fusiforme. Acritarch assemblages from the Sajir Member of the Saq Formation are poorly diversified and dominated by sphaeromorphs. More diverse assemblages of acritarchs, associated with enigmatic forms, occur in the Hanadir Member of the Qasim Formation. The contact between the two formations and the transition between the palynomorph assemblages are sharp, suggesting a stratigraphic hiatus. A quantitative analysis allows us to discuss the paleoenvironmental changes and possibly climatic changes associated with an hypothesis of ice house conditions during this period. Among the diagnostic acritarch taxa observed are Frankea breviuscula, F. longiuscula, Baltisphaeridium ternatum, Dasydorus cirritus, Dicrodiacrodium ancoriforme, Poikilofusa ciliaris, Pterospermopsis colbathii and Uncinisphaera fusticula. These are associated with other typical forms known to range across the Lower–Middle Ordovician boundary, such as Aremoricanium rigaudae, Aureotesta clathrata, Barakella fortunata, B. rara, Baltisphaeridium klabavense, Glaucotesta latiramosa and Striatotheca spp. Galeate and peteinoid acritarchs are also well represented, as well as tiny forms of ultraplanctonic size. Three new species of acritarchs are proposed: Frankea longiuscula var. darriwilense var. nov, Micrhystridium regulum sp. nov, and Tyrannus proteus sp. nov. Repeated occurrences throughout the section of cryptospores, problematic microfossils such as organic filaments, cuticle-like tissues, striated and pigmented leiospheres frequently in clusters, are interpreted to reflect recurrent terrestrial and freshwater inputs in the depositional environment. Single-specimen, high-resolution analyses using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy on the enigmatic form Tyrannus proteus sp. nov. show fluorescence emission spectra and microstructural properties significantly different from those of typical marine acritarchs from the same levels
