Globalizations for partial (co)actions on coalgebras

    Get PDF
In this paper, we introduce the notion of globalization for partial module coalgebra and for partial comodule coalgebra. We show that every partial module coalgebra is globalizable exhibiting a standard globalization. We also show the existence of globalization for a partial comodule coalgebra, provided a certain rationality condition. Moreover, we show a relationship between the globalization for the (co)module coalgebra and the usual globalization for the (co)module algebra.Comment: 31 page

Impact Of Construction And Reclamation Activities On The Water Quality Of The Thane Creek, Central-West Coast Of India

Degradation of natural resources is a major environmental issue the world is currently facing. Estuaries, creeks and coastal water ecosystems are such natural resources that are important as breeding and feeding grounds for fishes and crustaceans. Human activities and alterations made by reclamation have had an adverse effect on their ecology. Due to this, water quality management in these ecosystems has become a necessity. Regular studies of the hydrological parameters are essential for this purpose, as they can assess the status of pollution and help in deciding the mitigation strategy. Water quality of 26 km stretch of Thane creek, central-west coast of India was analyzed in 5 regions of the creek from May 1999 to April 2000. The study revealed spatial and temporal patterns. Heavy suspended solid load (avg. 5.736 gm/L), frequent hypoxia (DO<2.5 mg/L) coupled with excess nutrients like Phosphate-Phosphorus (avg. 0.26 mg/L) and Nitrate-Nitrogen (avg. 0.96 mg/L) were the main features of the creek. The Thane city region showed more deterioration of water quality compared to the other regions in the creek. In this region the suspended solid load showed an increase of 713.69% and dissolved oxygen decreased by 21.55% compared to the data of 1992-93. This can be attributed to the severe onslaught of activities in this region like solid waste dumping, construction of 3 new bridges, etc. since 1993, thereby affecting the flushing characteristic. Hence in order to protect and preserve such ecosystems, alterations to the environment should be meticulously planned

Dashbell: A Low-cost Smart Doorbell System for Home Use

Smart doorbells allow home owners to receive alerts when a visitor is at the door, see who the guest is, and communicate with the visitor from a smart device. They greatly improve people's life quality and contribute to the evolution of smart homes. However, the commercial smart doorbells are quite expensive, usually cost more than 190 US dollars, which is a substantial impediment on the pervasiveness of smart doorbells. To solve this problem, we introduce the Dashbell-a budget smart doorbell system for home use. It connects a WiFi-enabled device, the Amazon Dash Button, to a network and enables the home owner to answer the bell triggered by the dash button using a smartphone. The Dashbell system also enables fast fault detection and diagnosis due to its distributed framework.Comment: Accepted by IEEE PerCom 201

This article summarises the context in which the ILO came into being in 1919. It describes this organisation’s central and broader structure, highlighting its three-part based operation, as well as its main aims over the more than ninety years of its existence. It gives a brief account of the way Portugal related to the ILO, especially under the Portuguese fascist regime called «Estado novo», when this country was criticised for its lack of labour union freedom and the period which succeeded the 1974 Revolution. Under democratic rele, relations with the ILO were intensified and the ILO opened and Office in Lisbon. This Office, toghether with Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), promotes the role of the Portuguese language within the ILO and the technical collaboration among the eight Portuguese speaking countries worldwide, comprising more that 250 million native speakers

Role of Calcium in Inflammation: Relevance to Alzheimer\u27s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is neuropathologically characterized by excessive beta -amyloid (Abeta)plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau in the brain. Although the etiology of genetic cases of AD has been attributed to mutations in presenilin and amyloid precursor protein (APP) genes, in most sporadic cases of AD, the etiology is still unknown and various predisposing factors could contribute to the pathology of AD. Predominant among these possible predisposing factors that have been implicated in AD are age, hypertension, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, chronic neuroinflammation, alteration in calcium levels and oxidative stress. Since both inflammation and altered calcium levels are implicated in the pathogenesis of AD, we wanted to study the effect of altered levels of calcium on inflammation and the subsequent effect of selective calcium channel blockers on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Our hypothesis is that Abeta depending on it conformation, may contribute to altered levels of intracellular calcium in neurons and glial cells. We wanted to determine which conformation of Abeta was most pathogenic in terms of increasing inflammation and calcium influx and further elucidate the possibility of a link between altered calcium levels and inflammation. In addition, we wanted to test whether calcium channel blockers could inhibit the inflammation mediated by the most pathogenic form of Abeta by antagonizing the calcium influx triggered by Abeta. Our results in human glial and neuronal cells demonstrate that the high molecular weight oligomers are the most potent at stimulating the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 as well as increasing intracellular levels of calcium compared to other conformations of Abeta. Further, L-type calcium channel blockers and calmodulin kinase inhibitors are able to significantly reduce the levels of IL-6 and IL-8. These results suggest that Abeta induced alteration of intracellular calcium levels contributes to its pro-inflammatory effect
