Ks-band detection of thermal emission and color constraints to CoRoT-1b: A low-albedo planet with inefficient atmospheric energy redistribution and a temperature inversion
We report the detection in Ks-band of the secondary eclipse of the hot
Jupiter CoRoT-1b, from time series photometry with the ARC 3.5-m telescope at
Apache Point Observatory. The eclipse shows a depth of 0.336+/-0.042 percent
and is centered at phase 0.5022 (+0.0023,-0.0027), consistent with a zero
eccentricity orbit ecos{\omega} = 0.0035 (+0.0036,-0.0042). We perform the
first optical to near-infrared multi-band photometric analysis of an
exoplanet's atmosphere and constrain the reflected and thermal emissions by
combining our result with the recent 0.6, 0.71, and 2.09 micron secondary
eclipse detections by Snellen et al. (2009), Gillon et al. (2009), and Alonso
et al. (2009a). Comparing the multi-wavelength detections to state-of-the-art
radiative-convective chemical-equilibrium atmosphere models, we find the
near-infrared fluxes difficult to reproduce. The closest blackbody-based and
physical models provide the following atmosphere parameters: a temperature T =
2454 (+84,-170) K, a very low Bond albedo A_B = 0.000 (+0.087,-0.000), and an
energy redistribution parameter P_n = 0.1, indicating a small but nonzero
amount of heat transfer from the day- to night-side. The best physical model
suggests a thermal inversion layer with an extra optical absorber of opacity
kappa_e =0.05cm^2g^-1, placed near the 0.1-bar atmospheric pressure level. This
inversion layer is located ten times deeper in the atmosphere than the
absorbers used in models to fit mid-infrared Spitzer detections of other
irradiated hot Jupiters.Comment: accepted for publication on Ap
XO-5b: A Transiting Jupiter-sized Planet With A Four Day Period
The star XO-5 (GSC 02959-00729, V=12.1, G8V) hosts a Jupiter-sized,
Rp=1.15+/-0.12 Rjup, transiting extrasolar planet, XO-5b, with an orbital
period of P=4.187732+/-0.00002 days. The planet mass (Mp=1.15+/-0.08 Mjup) and
surface gravity (gp=22+/-5 m/s^2) are significantly larger than expected by
empirical Mp-P and Mp-P-[Fe/H] relationships. However, the deviation from the
Mp-P relationship for XO-5b is not large enough to suggest a distinct type of
planet as is suggested for GJ 436b, HAT-P-2b, and XO-3b. By coincidence XO-5
overlies the extreme H I plume that emanates from the interacting galaxy pair
NGC 2444/NGC 2445 (Arp 143).Comment: 10 pages, 9 Figures, Submitted to Ap
Secondary Eclipse Photometry of WASP-4b with Warm Spitzer
We present photometry of the giant extrasolar planet WASP-4b at 3.6 and 4.5
micron taken with the Infrared Array Camera on board the Spitzer Space
Telescope as part of Spitzer's extended warm mission. We find secondary eclipse
depths of 0.319+/-0.031% and 0.343+/-0.027% for the 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands,
respectively and show model emission spectra and pressure-temperature profiles
for the planetary atmosphere. These eclipse depths are well fit by model
emission spectra with water and other molecules in absorption, similar to those
used for TrES-3 and HD 189733b. Depending on our choice of model, these results
indicate that this planet has either a weak dayside temperature inversion or no
inversion at all. The absence of a strong thermal inversion on this highly
irradiated planet is contrary to the idea that highly irradiated planets are
expected to have inversions, perhaps due the presence of an unknown absorber in
the upper atmosphere. This result might be explained by the modestly enhanced
activity level of WASP-4b's G7V host star, which could increase the amount of
UV flux received by the planet, therefore reducing the abundance of the unknown
stratospheric absorber in the planetary atmosphere as suggested in Knutson et
al. (2010). We also find no evidence for an offset in the timing of the
secondary eclipse and place a 2 sigma upper limit on |ecos(omega)| of 0.0024,
which constrains the range of tidal heating models that could explain this
planet's inflated radius.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures (some in color), accepted for publication in Ap
Disequilibrium Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen Chemistry in the Atmospheres of HD 189733b and HD 209458b
We have developed 1-D photochemical and thermochemical kinetics and diffusion
models for the transiting exoplanets HD 189733b and HD 209458b to study the
effects of disequilibrium chemistry on the atmospheric composition of "hot
Jupiters." Here we investigate the coupled chemistry of neutral carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen species, and we compare the model results with
existing transit and eclipse observations. We find that the vertical profiles
of molecular constituents are significantly affected by transport-induced
quenching and photochemistry, particularly on cooler HD 189733b; however, the
warmer stratospheric temperatures on HD 209458b can help maintain
thermochemical equilibrium and reduce the effects of disequilibrium chemistry.
For both planets, the methane and ammonia mole fractions are found to be
enhanced over their equilibrium values at pressures of a few bar to less than a
mbar due to transport-induced quenching, but CH4 and NH3 are photochemically
removed at higher altitudes. Atomic species, unsaturated hydrocarbons
(particularly C2H2), some nitriles (particularly HCN), and radicals like OH,
CH3, and NH2 are enhanced overequilibrium predictions because of quenching and
photochemistry. In contrast, CO, H2O, N2, and CO2 more closely follow their
equilibrium profiles, except at pressures < 1 microbar, where CO, H2O, and N2
are photochemically destroyed and CO2 is produced before its eventual
high-altitude destruction. The enhanced abundances of HCN, CH4, and NH3 in
particular are expected to affect the spectral signatures and thermal profiles
HD 189733b and other, relatively cool, close-in transiting exoplanets. We
examine the sensitivity of our results to the assumed temperature structure and
eddy diffusion coefficientss and discuss further observational consequences of
these models.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical

Gran Telescopio Canarias OSIRIS Transiting Exoplanet Atmospheric Survey: Detection of potassium in XO-2b from narrowband spectrophotometry
We present Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) optical transit narrow-band
photometry of the hot-Jupiter exoplanet XO-2b using the OSIRIS instrument. This
unique instrument has the capabilities to deliver high cadence narrow-band
photometric lightcurves, allowing us to probe the atmospheric composition of
hot Jupiters from the ground. The observations were taken during three transit
events which cover four wavelengths at spectral resolutions near 500, necessary
for observing atmospheric features, and have near-photon limited sub-mmag
precisions. Precision narrow-band photometry on a large aperture telescope
allows for atmospheric transmission spectral features to be observed for
exoplanets around much fainter stars than those of the well studied targets
HD209458b and HD189733b, providing access to the majority of known transiting
planets. For XO-2b, we measure planet-to-star radius contrasts of
R_pl/R_star=0.10508+/-0.00052 at 6792 Ang, 0.10640+/-0.00058 at 7582 Ang, and
0.10686+/-0.00060 at 7664.9 Ang, and 0.10362+/-0.00051 at 8839 Ang. These
measurements reveal significant spectral features at two wavelengths, with an
absorption level of 0.067+/-0.016% at 7664.9 Ang due to atmospheric potassium
in the line core (a 4.1-sigma significance level), and an absorption level of
0.058+/-0.016% at 7582 Ang, (a 3.6-sigma significance level). When comparing
our measurements to hot-Jupiter atmospheric models, we find good agreement with
models which are dominated in the optical by alkali metals. This is the first
evidence for potassium in an extrasolar planet, an element that has long been
theorized along with sodium to be a dominant source of opacity at optical
wavelengths for hot Jupiters.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A, minor changes to wording,

Population-level impact and herd effects following the introduction of human papillomavirus vaccination programmes: updated systematic review and meta-analysis
Background More than 10 years have elapsed since human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination was implemented. We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of the population-level impact of vaccinating girls and women against human papillomavirus on HPV infections, anogenital wart diagnoses, and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2+ (CIN2+)to summarise the most recent evidence about the effectiveness of HPV vaccines in real-world settings and to quantify the impact of multiple age-cohort vaccination. Methods In this updated systematic review and meta-analysis, we used the same search strategy as in our previous paper. We searched MEDLINE and Embase for studies published between Feb 1, 2014, and Oct 11, 2018. Studies were eligible if they compared the frequency (prevalence or incidence) of at least one HPV-related endpoint (genital HPV infections, anogenital wart diagnoses, or histologically confirmed CIN2+) between pre-vaccination and post-vaccination periods among the general population and if they used the same population sources and recruitment methods before and after vaccination. Our primary assessment was the relative risk (RR) comparing the frequency (prevalence or incidence) of HPV-related endpoints between the pre-vaccination and post-vaccination periods. We stratified all analyses by sex, age, and years since introduction of HPV vaccination. We used random-effects models to estimate pooled relative risks.Findings We identified 1702 potentially eligible articles for this systematic review and meta-analysis, and included 65 articles in 14 high-income countries: 23 for HPV infection, 29 for anogenital warts, and 13 for CIN2+.After 5–8 years of vaccination, the prevalence of HPV 16 and 18 decreased significantly by 83% (RR 0뜗, 95% CI 0뜑–0뜥) among girls aged 13–19 years, and decreased significantly by 66% (RR 0뜴, 95% CI 0뜣–0띉) among women aged 20–24 years. The prevalence of HPV 31, 33, and 45 decreased significantly by 54% (RR 0띆, 95% CI 0뜳–0띦) among girls aged 13–19 years. Anogenital wart diagnoses decreased significantly by 67% (RR 0뜳, 95% CI 0뜤–0띆) among girls aged 15–19 years, decreased significantly by 54% (RR 0띆, 95% CI 0.36–0.60) among women aged 20–24 years, and decreased significantly by 31% (RR 0띩, 95% CI 0띓–0랉) among women aged 25–29 years. Among boys aged 15–19 years anogenital wart diagnoses decreased significantly by 48% (RR 0띒, 95% CI 0뜷–0띵) and among men aged 20–24 years they decreased significantly by 32% (RR 0띨, 95% CI 0띇–0래). After 5–9 years of vaccination, CIN2+ decreased significantly by 51% (RR 0띉, 95% CI 0띂–0띘) among screened girls aged 15–19 years and decreased significantly by 31% (RR 0띩, 95% CI 0띗–0랄) among women aged 20–24 years.Interpretation This updated systematic review and meta-analysis includes data from 60 million individuals and up to 8 years of post-vaccination follow-up. Our results show compelling evidence of the substantial impact of HPV vaccination programmes on HPV infections and CIN2+ among girls and women, and on anogenital warts diagnoses among girls, women, boys, and men. Additionally, programmes with multi-cohort vaccination and high vaccination coverage had a greater direct impact and herd effects
Kepler-14b: A massive hot Jupiter transiting an F star in a close visual binary
We present the discovery of a hot Jupiter transiting an F star in a close visual (03 sky projected angular separation) binary system. The dilution of the host star's light by the nearly equalmagnitude stellar companion (∼0.5mag fainter) significantly affects the derived planetary parameters, and if left uncorrected, leads to an underestimate of the radius and mass of the planet by 10% and 60%, respectively. Other published exoplanets, which have not been observed with high-resolution imaging, could similarly have unresolved stellar companions and thus have incorrectly derived planetary parameters. Kepler-14b (KOI-98) has a period of P = 6.790 days and, correcting for the dilution, has a mass of Mp = 8.40+0.35 -0.34 M J and a radius of Rp = 1.136+0.073 -0.054 R J, yielding a mean density of ρp = 7.1 ± 1.1 g cm-3
Characteristics of planetary candidates observed by Kepler. II. Analysis of the first four months of data
On 2011 February 1 the Kepler mission released data for 156,453 stars observed from the beginning of the science observations on 2009 May 2 through September 16. There are 1235 planetary candidates with transit-like signatures detected in this period. These are associated with 997 host stars. Distributions of the characteristics of the planetary candidates are separated into five class sizes: 68 candidates of approximately Earth-size (Rp < 1.25 R⊕), 288 super-Earth-size (1.25 R⊕ ≤ R p < 2 R⊕), 662 Neptune-size (2 R ⊕ ≤ Rp < 6 R⊕), 165 Jupiter-size (6 R⊕ ≤ Rp < 15 R ⊕), and 19 up to twice the size of Jupiter (15 R ⊕ ≤ Rp < 22 R⊕). In the temperature range appropriate for the habitable zone, 54 candidates are found with sizes ranging from Earth-size to larger than that of Jupiter. Six are less than twice the size of the Earth. Over 74% of the planetary candidates are smaller than Neptune. The observed number versus size distribution of planetary candidates increases to a peak at two to three times the Earth-size and then declines inversely proportional to the area of the candidate. Our current best estimates of the intrinsic frequencies of planetary candidates, after correcting for geometric and sensitivity biases, are 5% for Earth-size candidates, 8% for super-Earth-size candidates, 18% for Neptune-size candidates, 2% for Jupiter-size candidates, and 0.1% for very large candidates; a total of 0.34 candidates per star. Multi-candidate, transiting systems are frequent; 17% of the host stars have multi-candidate systems, and 34% of all the candidates are part of multi-candidate systems
