Control of plant phosphate homeostasis by inositol pyrophosphates and the SPX domain.
Proteins containing a SPX domain are involved in phosphate (Pi) homeostasis, including Pi transport and adaptation to Pi deficiency. The SPX domain harbors a basic surface binding Pi at low affinity and inositol pyrophosphates (PP-InsPs) at high affinity. Genetic and biochemical studies revealed that PP-InsPs serve as ligands for the SPX domain. Residues in the PHO1 SPX domain involved in PP-InsPs binding are critical for its Pi export activity, and the interaction between SPX proteins and the PHR1 transcription factor, which results in PHR1 inactivation, is promoted by PP-InsPs. Changes in PP-InsPs levels in response to Pi deficiency may thus contribute to the adaptation of plants to stress via the modulation of the activity of SPX-containing proteins and their interactors. Modulating PP-InsP levels or the affinity/specificity of the SPX domain for PP-InsP could potentially be used to engineer crops to maintain high yield under reduced Pi fertilizer input
Intramuscular EMG-Driven Musculoskeletal Modelling: Towards Implanted Muscle Interfacing in Spinal Cord Injury Patients
Objective: Surface EMG-driven modelling has been proposed as a means to control assistive devices by estimating joint torques. Implanted EMG sensors have several advantages over wearable sensors but provide a more localized information on muscle activity, which may impact torque estimates. Here, we tested and compared the use of surface and intramuscular EMG measurements for the estimation of required assistive joint torques using EMG driven modelling. Methods: Four healthy subjects and three incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients performed walking trials at varying speeds. Motion capture marker trajectories, surface and intramuscular EMG, and ground reaction forces were measured concurrently. Subject-specific musculoskeletal models were developed for all subjects, and inverse dynamics analysis was performed for all individual trials. EMG-driven modelling based joint torque estimates were obtained from surface and intramuscular EMG. Results: The correlation between the experimental and predicted joint torques was similar when using intramuscular or surface EMG as input to the EMG-driven modelling estimator in both healthy individuals and patients. Conclusion: We have provided the first comparison of non-invasive and implanted EMG sensors as input signals for torque estimates in healthy individuals and SCI patients. Significance: Implanted EMG sensors have the potential to be used as a reliable input for assistive exoskeleton joint torque actuation. The authors would like to thank Enrique Pérez Rizo, Natalia Comino Suárez and María Isabel Sinovas Alonso for their assistance on the experimental and data acquisition procedure
Systematic review of exercise and the long-term outcomes of the treatment for obesity.
We systematically reviewed randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of obesity treatments in adults and assessed long term effects on weight and risk factors for disease
Synchronization and resonance in a driven system of coupled oscillators
We study the noise effects in a driven system of globally coupled
oscillators, with particular attention to the interplay between driving and
noise. The self-consistency equation for the order parameter, which measures
the collective synchronization of the system, is derived; it is found that the
total order parameter decreases monotonically with noise, indicating overall
suppression of synchronization. Still, for large coupling strengths, there
exists an optimal noise level at which the periodic (ac) component of the order
parameter reaches its maximum. The response of the phase velocity is also
examined and found to display resonance behavior.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Phase synchronization and noise-induced resonance in systems of coupled oscillators
We study synchronization and noise-induced resonance phenomena in systems of
globally coupled oscillators, each possessing finite inertia. The behavior of
the order parameter, which measures collective synchronization of the system,
is investigated as the noise level and the coupling strength are varied, and
hysteretic behavior is manifested. The power spectrum of the phase velocity is
also examined and the quality factor as well as the response function is
obtained to reveal noise-induced resonance behavior.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Solution of the Kwiecinski evolution equations for unintegrated parton distributions using the Mellin transform
The Kwiecinski equations for the QCD evolution of the unintegrated parton
distributions in the transverse-coordinate space (b) are analyzed with the help
of the Mellin-transform method. The equations are solved numerically in the
general case, as well as in a small-b expansion which converges fast for b
Lambda_QCD sufficiently small. We also discuss the asymptotic limit of large bQ
and show that the distributions generated by the evolution decrease with b
according to a power law. Numerical results are presented for the pion
distributions with a simple valence-like initial condition at the low scale,
following from chiral large-N_c quark models. We use two models: the Spectral
Quark Model and the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Formal aspects of the equations,
such as the analytic form of the b-dependent anomalous dimensions, their
analytic structure, as well as the limits of unintegrated parton densities at x
-> 0, x -> 1, and at large b, are discussed in detail. The effect of spreading
of the transverse momentum with the increasing scale is confirmed, with
growing asymptotically as Q^2 alpha(Q^2). Approximate formulas for
for each parton species is given, which may be used in practical
applications.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, RevTe
The First VERITAS Telescope
The first atmospheric Cherenkov telescope of VERITAS (the Very Energetic
Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) has been in operation since February
2005. We present here a technical description of the instrument and a summary
of its performance. The calibration methods are described, along with the
results of Monte Carlo simulations of the telescope and comparisons between
real and simulated data. The analysis of TeV -ray observations of the
Crab Nebula, including the reconstructed energy spectrum, is shown to give
results consistent with earlier measurements. The telescope is operating as
expected and has met or exceeded all design specifications.Comment: Accepted by Astroparticle Physic
Percolation thresholds in chemical disordered excitable media
The behavior of chemical waves advancing through a disordered excitable medium is investigated in terms of percolation theory and autowave properties in the framework of the light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. By controlling the number of sites with a given illumination, different percolation thresholds for propagation are observed, which depend on the relative wave transmittances of the two-state medium considered
Global Search for New Physics with 2.0/fb at CDF
Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for
indications of new electroweak-scale physics. Rather than focusing on
particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with
the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers
gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross-section
physics. Further sensitivity to new physics is provided by two additional
algorithms: a Bump Hunter searches invariant mass distributions for "bumps"
that could indicate resonant production of new particles; and the Sleuth
procedure scans for data excesses at large summed transverse momentum. This
combined global search for new physics in 2.0/fb of ppbar collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV reveals no indication of physics beyond the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Final version which appeared in Physical Review D
