The genus Huperzia (Lycopodiaceae) in the Azores and Madeira
The taxonomy and nomenclature of the genus Huperzia Bernh. in the Azores and Madeira have been reviewed.
Plants collected in the Azores and Madeira were characterized morphologically. The independence between two
endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores Islands – Huperzia suberecta (Lowe) Tardieu and Huperzia
dentata (Herter) Holub – is clearly shown. A clear-cut morphological separation between these taxa and Huperzia
selago (L.) Bernh. ex Schrank & Mart. of continental Europe is established

On the identity of Festuca jubata Lowe (Poaceae) and the description of a new Festuca species in the Azores Islands
The majority of authors consider Festuca jubata Lowe as an endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores.
Saint-Yves proposed that F. jubata was an Azorean endemic and described a geovicarious taxon in Madeira:
F. filiformis C. Sm. ex Link in Buch ssp. mandonii St.-Yves. We undertook a complete bibliographical revision of
the taxonomy, nomenclature, and chorology of F. jubata s.l., and contrasted it with morphological and anatomical
studies performed on samples from the Azores and Madeira. Azorean plants usually identified as F. jubata had a
character combination distinct from that of those with a Madeiran provenance. Saint-Yves’ proposal of two
independent taxa was correct, but he erroneously considered F. jubata as an Azorean endemic because the name
F. jubata was based on Madeiran plants. Consequently, F. jubata auct. pl. from the Azores belongs to a new
species

Impact exercise strategies in the HRQOL of the sedentary adults
obtuvo valores superiores en salud mental, no siendo así en salud físicaThe aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of different intervention
strategies of exercise and relate the perception of quality of life related to health
(HRQOL) in sedentary older adults. It involved 100 subjects, aged between 60
and 70, who were randomly divided into four groups: control, recommend,
prescribe and monitor. The exercise intervention lasted 6 months. The SF-36
questionnaire was used for the assessment of HRQOL. The monitoring and
prescription groups had higher values in all domains in the intragroup analysis.
Physical function and health and mental health obtain the highest significant
values between groups (p <.05). There are no significant differences at all in
any domain among prescription and monitoring groups. However, the
monitoring group obtained higher values in mental health, but were not in
physical healt
Effect of bovine ABCG2 polymorphism Y581S SNP on secretion into milk of enterolactone, riboflavin and uric acid
P. 238-247The ATP-binding cassette transporter G2/breast cancer resistance protein (ABCG2/BCRP) is an efflux protein involved in the bioavailability and milk secretion of endogenous and exogenous compounds, actively affecting milk composition. A limited number of physiological substrates have been identified. However, no studies have reported the specific effect of this polymorphism on the secretion into milk of compounds implicated in milk quality such as vitamins or endogenous compounds. The bovine ABCG2 Y581S polymorphism is described as a gain-of-function polymorphism that increases milk secretion and decreases plasma levels of its substrates. This work aims to study the impact of Y581S polymorphism on plasma disposition and milk secretion of compounds such as riboflavin (vitamin B2), enterolactone, a microbiota-derived metabolite from the dietary lignan secoisolariciresinol and uric acid. In vitro transport of these compounds was assessed in MDCK-II cells overexpressing the bovine ABCG2 (WT-bABCG2) and its Y581S variant (Y581S-bABCG2). Plasma and milk levels were obtained from Y/Y homozygous and Y/S heterozygous cows. The results show that riboflavin was more efficiently transported in vitro by the Y581S variant, although no differences were noted in vivo. Both uric acid and enterolactone were substrates in vitro of the bovine ABCG2 variants and were actively secreted into milk with a two-fold increase in the milk/plasma ratio for Y/S with respect to Y/Y cows. The in vitro ABCG2-mediated transport of the drug mitoxantrone, as a model substrate, was inhibited by enterolactone in both variants, suggesting the possible in vivo use of this enterolignan to reduce ABCG2-mediated milk drug transfer in cows. The Y581S variant was inhibited to a lesser extent probably due to its higher transport capacity. All these findings point to a significant role of the ABCG2 Y581S polymorphism in the milk disposition of enterolactone and the endogenous molecules riboflavin and uric acid, which could affect both milk quality and functionality.S
Evaluation of spacial resolution of a PET scanner through the simulation and experimental measurement of the Recovery coefficient
Purpose: In order to measure spatial resolution of a PET tomograph in clinical conditions, this study describes and
validates a method based on the recovery coefficient, a factor required to compensate underestimation in measured
radioactivity concentration for small structures.
Methods: In a PET image, the recovery factors of radioactive spheres were measured and their comparison with
simulated recovery coefficients yielded the tomographic spatial resolution. Following this methodology, resolution was
determined in different surrounding media and several conditions for reconstruction, including clinical conditions for brain
PET studies. All spatial resolution values were compared with those obtained using classical methods with point and
line sources.
Results: In each considered condition, spatial resolution of the PET image estimated using the recovery coefficient
showed good agreement with classical methods measurements, validating the procedure.
Conclusion: Measurement of the recovery coefficient provides an assessment of tomographic spatial resolution,
particularly in clinical studies conditions
seguimiento relativos a algunos parámetros no presentarán valores especialmente
Measurement of the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section at the CERN n-TOF facility : First results from experimental area II (EAR-2)
The accurate knowledge of the neutron-induced fission cross-sections of actinides and other isotopes involved in the nuclear fuel cycle is essential for the design of advanced nuclear systems, such as Generation-IV nuclear reactors. Such experimental data can also provide the necessary feedback for the adjustment of nuclear model parameters used in the evaluation process, resulting in the further development of nuclear fission models. In the present work, the 240Pu(n,f) cross-section was measured at CERN's n-TOF facility relative to the well-known 235U(n,f) cross section, over a wide range of neutron energies, from meV to almost MeV, using the time-of-flight technique and a set-up based on Micromegas detectors. This measurement was the first experiment to be performed at n-TOF's new experimental area (EAR-2), which offers a significantly higher neutron flux compared to the already existing experimental area (EAR-1). Preliminary results as well as the experimental procedure, including a description of the facility and the data handling and analysis, are presented
