[Located herbicide application to control alecrim-do-campo (Vernonia nudiflora) in natural grassland]. Abstract: To evaluate the control of alecrim-do-campo (Vernonia nudiflora) with contact herbicides, an experiment was conducted during 353 days, following a split plot block design, with three replicates in a (5x3)+1 factorial arrangement, being five herbicides in three doses and the control. The plots corresponded to the herbicides, with doses of 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 L ha-1 of Tordon, Aminol 806, Garlon, Grazon e Plenum. The presence of V. nudiflora was evaluated prior to application and 60 and 353 days after. The application was made using a chemical applicator, which consists of a platform of adjustable height that contacts only the target plant. The herbicides did not differ in reducing the abundance of V. nudiflora and all of them reduced significantly more than the control. The chemical applicator was effective to control alecrim-do-campo, even with low herbicide concentrations, reducing the Vernonia abundance and not being harmful to the native desirable species

The Chemistry of Interstellar OH+, H2O+, and H3O+: Inferring the Cosmic Ray Ionization Rates from Observations of Molecular Ions

We model the production of OH+, H2O+, and H3O+ in interstellar clouds, using a steady state photodissociation region code that treats the freeze-out of gas species, grain surface chemistry, and desorption of ices from grains. The code includes PAHs, which have important effects on the chemistry. All three ions generally have two peaks in abundance as a function of depth into the cloud, one at A_V<~1 and one at A_V~3-8, the exact values depending on the ratio of incident ultraviolet flux to gas density. For relatively low values of the incident far ultraviolet flux on the cloud ({\chi}<~ 1000; {\chi}= 1= local interstellar value), the columns of OH+ and H2O+ scale roughly as the cosmic ray primary ionization rate {\zeta}(crp) divided by the hydrogen nucleus density n. The H3O+ column is dominated by the second peak, and we show that if PAHs are present, N(H3O+) ~ 4x10^{13} cm^{-2} independent of {\zeta}(crp) or n. If there are no PAHs or very small grains at the second peak, N(H3O+) can attain such columns only if low ionization potential metals are heavily depleted. We also model diffuse and translucent clouds in the interstellar medium, and show how observations of N(OH+)/N(H) and N(OH+)/N(H2O+) can be used to estimate {\zeta}(crp)/n, {\chi}/n and A_V in them. We compare our models to Herschel observations of these two ions, and estimate {\zeta}(crp) ~ 4-6 x 10^-16 (n/100 cm^-3) s^-1 and \chi/n = 0.03 cm^3 for diffuse foreground clouds towards W49N

Time-dependent photoionization of azulene: Optically induced anisotropy on the femtosecond scale

We measure the photoionization cross-section of vibrationally excited levels in the S2 state of azulene by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. At the wavelengths studied (349-265 nm in the pump) the transient signals exhibit two distinct and well-defined behaviours: (i) Short-term (on the order of a picosecond) polarization dependent transients and (ii) longer (10 ps - 1 ns) time-scale decays. This letter focuses on the short time transient. In contrast to an earlier study by Diau et al.22 [J. Chem. Phys. 110 (1999) 9785.] we unambiguously assign the fast initial decay signal to rotational dephasing of the initial alignment created by the pump transition.Comment: Chemical Physics Letters (2008

The CH out-of-plane bending modes of PAH molecules in astrophysical environments

We present 10-15 micron spectra of a sample of H II regions, YSOs and evolved stars that show strong unidentified infrared emission features, obtained with the ISO/SWS spectrograph on-board ISO. These spectra reveal a plethora of emission features with bands at 11.0, 11.2, 12.0, 12.7, 13.5 and 14.2 micron. These features are observed to vary considerably in relative strength to each-other from source to source. In particular, the 10-15 micron spectra of the evolved stars are dominated by the 11.2 micron band while for H II regions the 12.7 is typically as strong as the 11.2 micron band. Analysing the ISO data we find a good correlation between the 11.2 micron band and the 3.3 micron band, and between the 12.7 micron and the 6.2 micron band. There is also a correlation between the ratio of the UIR bands to the total dust emission and the 12.7 over 11.2 micron ratio. Bands in the 10-15 micron spectral region are due to CH out-of-plane (OOP) bending modes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We summarise existing laboratory data and theoretical quantum chemical calculations of these modes for neutral and cationic PAHs. Due to mode coupling, the exact peak position of these bands depends on the number of adjacent CH groups and hence the observed interstellar 10-15 micron spectra can be used to determine the molecular structure of the interstellar PAHs emitting in the different regions. We conclude that evolved stars predominantly inject compact ~100-200 C-atom PAHs into the ISM where they are subsequently processed, resulting in more open and uneven PAH structures.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for A&

Stabilities of nanohydrated thymine radical cations: insights from multiphoton ionization experiments and ab initio calculations

    Get PDF
Multi-photon ionization experiments have been carried out on thymine-water clusters in the gas phase. Metastable H2O loss from T+(H2O)n was observed at n ≥ 3 only. Ab initio quantum-chemical calculations of a large range of optimized T+(H2O)n conformers have been performed up to n = 4, enabling binding energies of water to be derived. These decrease smoothly with n, consistent with the general trend of increasing metastable H2O loss in the experimental data. The lowest-energy conformers of T+(H2O)3 and T+(H2O)4 feature intermolecular bonding via charge-dipole interactions, in contrast with the purely hydrogen-bonded neutrals. We found no evidence for a closed hydration shell at n = 4, also contrasting with studies of neutral clusters

The unusual protoplanetary disk around the T Tauri star ET Cha

We present new continuum and line observations, along with modelling, of the faint (6-8) Myr old T Tauri star ET Cha belonging to the eta Chamaeleontis cluster. We have acquired HERSCHEL/PACS photometric fluxes at 70 mic and 160 mic, as well as a detection of the [OI] 63 mic fine-structure line in emission, and derived upper limits for some other far-IR OI, CII, CO and o-H2O lines. The HERSCHEL data is complemented by new ANDICAM B-K photometry, new HST/COS and HST/STIS UV-observations, a non-detection of CO J=3-2 with APEX, re-analysis of a UCLES high-resolution optical spectrum showing forbidden emission lines like [OI] 6300A, [SII] 6731A and 6716A, and [NII] 6583A, and a compilation of existing broad-band photometric data. We used the thermo-chemical disk code ProDiMo and the Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code MCFOST to model the protoplanetary disk around ET Cha. Based on these models we can determine the disk dust mass Mdust = (2.E-8 - 5.E-8) Msun, whereas the total disk gas mass is found to be only little constrained, Mgas = (5.E-5 - 3.E-3) Msun. In the models, the disk extends from 0.022 AU (just outside of the co-rotation radius) to only about 10 AU. Larger disks are found to be inconsistent with the CO J=3-2 non-detection. The low velocity component of the [OI] 6300A emission line is consistent with being emitted from the inner disk. The model can also reproduce the line flux of H2 v=1-0 S(1) at 2.122 mic. An additional high-velocity component of the [OI] 6300A emission line, however, points to the existence of an additional jet/outflow of low velocity (40 - 65) km/s with mass loss rate ~1.E-9 Msun/yr. In relation to our low estimations of the disk mass, such a mass loss rate suggests a disk lifetime of only ~(0.05 - 3) Myr, substantially shorter than the cluster age. The evolutionary state of this unusual protoplanetary disk is discussed.Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics (18 pages, 11 figures and 7 tables). Multi-photon and electron impact ionisation studies of reactivity in adenine–water clusters

    Get PDF
Multi-photon ionisation (MPI) and electron impact ionisation (EII) mass spectrometry experiments have been carried out to probe unimolecular and intermolecular reactivities in hydrated adenine clusters. The effects of clustering with water on fragment ion production from adenine have been studied for the first time. While the observation of NH4+ fragments indicated the dissociation of protonated adenine, the dominant hydration effects were enhanced C4H4N4+ production and the suppression of dissociative ionisation pathways with high activation energies. These observations can be attributed to energy removal from the excited adenine radical cation via cluster dissociation. Comparisons of MPI and EII measurements provided the first experimental evidence supporting hypoxanthine formation in adenine–water clusters via theoretically predicted barrierless deamination reactions in closed shell complexes
