    Mass Size Distribution and Chemical Composition of the Surface Layer of Summer and Winter Airborne Particles in Zabrze, Poland

    Mass size distributions of ambient aerosol were measured in Zabrze, a heavily industrialized city of Poland, during a summer and a winter season. The chemical analyses of the surface layer of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 in this area were also performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results suggested that the influence of an atmospheric aerosol on the health condition of Zabrze residents can be distinctly stronger in winter than in summer because of both: higher concentration level of particulate matter (PM) and higher contribution of fine particles in winter season compared to summer. In Zabrze in June (summer) PM10 and PM2.5 reached about 20 and 14 μg/m3, respectively, while in December (winter) 57 and 51 μg/m3, respectively. The XPS analysis showed that elemental carbon is the major surface component of studied airborne particles representing about 78%–80% (atomic mass) of all detected elements

    Theory of laser ion acceleration from a foil target of nanometers

    A theory for laser ion acceleration is presented to evaluate the maximum ion energy in the interaction of ultrahigh contrast (UHC) intense laser with a nanometer-scale foil. In this regime the energy of ions may be directly related to the laser intensity and subsequent electron dynamics. This leads to a simple analytical expression for the ion energy gain under the laser irradiation of thin targets. Significantly, higher energies for thin targets than for thicker targets are predicted.     Dielectronic Recombination of Ground-State and Metastable Li+ Ions

    Dielectronic recombination has been investigated for Delta-n = 1 resonances of ground-state Li+(1s^2) and for Delta-n = 0 resonances of metastable Li+(1s2s ^3S). The ground-state spectrum shows three prominent transitions between 53 and 64 eV, while the metastable spectrum exhibits many transitions with energies < 3.2 eV. Reasonably good agreement of R-matrix, LS coupling calculations with the measured recombination rate coefficient is obtained. The time dependence of the recombination rate yields a radiative lifetime of 52.2 +- 5.0 s for the 2 ^3S level of Li+.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. A; REVTeX, 4 pages, 3 figure

    Learning curves of open and endoscopic fetal spina bifida closure: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    OBJECTIVES: The Management Of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS) trial demonstrated the safety and efficacy of open fetal surgery for spina bifida (SB). Recently developed alternative techniques may reduce maternal risks yet should do without compromising on fetal neuroprotective effects. We aimed to assess the learning curve of different fetal SB closure techniques. METHODS: We searched Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane databases and the grey literature to identify relevant articles without language restriction from January 1980 until October 2018. We systematically reviewed and selected studies reporting all consecutive procedures and with a postnatal follow-up ≥12 months. They also had to report outcome variables necessary to measure the learning curve defined by fetal safety and efficacy. Two independent authors retrieved the data, assessed the quality of the studies and categorized observations into blocks of 30 patients. For meta-analysis, data were pooled using a random-effect model when heterogeneous. To measure the learning curve, we used two complementary methods. With the group splitting method, competency was defined when the procedure provided comparable results to the MOMS trial for 12 outcome variables representative for (1) the immediate surgical outcome, (2) short-term neonatal neuroprotection and (3) long-term neuroprotection at ≥12 months. Then, when the patients' raw data were available, we performed cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis based on a composite binary outcome defining a successful surgery. It combined four clinically relevant variables for safety (fetal death within 7 days) and for efficacy (neuroprotection at birth). RESULTS: We included 17/6024 (0.3%) studies with low and moderate risks of bias. Fetal SB closure was performed via standard-hysterotomy (n=11), mini-hysterotomy (n=1) or fetoscopy [exteriorized-uterus single-layer (n=1), percutaneous single-layer (n=3) or percutaneous two-layer closure (n=1)]. Only outcomes for the standard-hysterotomy could be meta-analyzed. Overall, outcomes significantly improved with experience. Competency was reached after 35 consecutive cases for standard-hysterotomy and was predicted to be achieved after ≥57 cases for mini-hysterotomy and ≥56 for percutaneous two-layer fetoscopy. For percutaneous and uterus-exteriorized single-layer fetoscopy, competency was not respectively reached by cases 81 and 28 available for analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The number of cases operated correlates with the outcome of SB fetal closure and ranges from 35 cases for standard-hysterotomy to ≥56-57 cases for minimally invasive modifications. Our observations provide important information for institutions eager to establish a new fetal center, develop a new technique or train their team, and inform referring clinicians, potential patients and third-parties

    HcRed, a Genetically Encoded Fluorescent Binary Cross-Linking Agent for Cross-Linking of Mitochondrial ATP Synthase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Genetically encoded fluorescent cross-linking agents represent powerful tools useful both for visualising and modulating protein interactions in living cells. The far-red fluorescent protein HcRed, which is fluorescent only in a dimer form, can be used to promote the homo-dimerisation of target proteins, and thereby yield useful information about biological processes. We have in yeast cells expressed HcRed fused to a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase (mtATPase). This resulted in cross-linking of the large multi-subunit mtATPase complex within the inner-membrane of the mitochondrion. Fluorescence microscopy revealed aberrant mitochondrial morphology, and mtATPase complexes isolated from mitochondria were recovered as fluorescent dimers under conditions where complexes from control mitochondria were recovered as monomers. When viewed by electron microscopy normal cristae were absent from mitochondria in cells in which mATPase complexes were cross-linked. mtATPase dimers are believed to be the building blocks that are assembled into supramolecular mtATPase ribbons that promote the formation of mitochondrial cristae. We propose that HcRed cross-links mATPase complexes in the mitochondrial membrane hindering the normal assembly/disassembly of the supramolecular forms of mtATPase

    Lesion of the Cerebellar Noradrenergic Innervation Enhances the Harmaline-Induced Tremor in Rats

    Abnormal synchronous activation of the glutamatergic olivo-cerebellar pathway has been suggested to be crucial for the harmaline-induced tremor. The cerebellum receives two catecholaminergic pathways: the dopaminergic pathway arising from the ventral tegmental area/substantia nigra pars compacta, and the noradrenergic one from the locus coeruleus. The aim of the present study was to examine a contribution of the cerebellar catecholaminergic innervations to the harmaline-induced tremor in rats. Rats were injected bilaterally into the cerebellar vermis with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA; 8 μg/0.5 μl) either alone or this treatment was preceded (30 min earlier) by desipramine (15 mg/kg ip). Harmaline was administered to animals in doses of 7.5 or 15 mg/kg ip. Tremor of forelimbs was measured as a number of episodes during a 90-min observation. Rats were killed by decapitation 30 or 120 min after harmaline treatment. The levels of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, and their metabolites were measured by HPLC in the cerebellum, substantia nigra, caudate–putamen, and frontal cortex. 6-OHDA injected alone enhanced the harmaline-induced tremor. Furthermore, it decreased the noradrenaline level by ca. 40–80% in the cerebellum and increased the levels of serotonin and 5-HIAA in the caudate–putamen and frontal cortex in untreated and/or harmaline-treated animals. When 6-OHDA treatment was preceded by desipramine, it decreased dopaminergic transmission in some regions of the cerebellum while inducing its compensatory activation in others. The latter lesion did not markedly influence the tremor induced by harmaline. The present study indicates that noradrenergic innervation of the cerebellum interacts with cerebral serotonergic systems and plays an inhibitory role in the harmaline-induced tremor

    Relationship between the Clinical Frailty Scale and short-term mortality in patients ≥ 80 years old acutely admitted to the ICU: a prospective cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is frequently used to measure frailty in critically ill adults. There is wide variation in the approach to analysing the relationship between the CFS score and mortality after admission to the ICU. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of modelling approach on the association between the CFS score and short-term mortality and quantify the prognostic value of frailty in this context. METHODS: We analysed data from two multicentre prospective cohort studies which enrolled intensive care unit patients ≥ 80 years old in 26 countries. The primary outcome was mortality within 30-days from admission to the ICU. Logistic regression models for both ICU and 30-day mortality included the CFS score as either a categorical, continuous or dichotomous variable and were adjusted for patient's age, sex, reason for admission to the ICU, and admission Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score. RESULTS: The median age in the sample of 7487 consecutive patients was 84 years (IQR 81-87). The highest fraction of new prognostic information from frailty in the context of 30-day mortality was observed when the CFS score was treated as either a categorical variable using all original levels of frailty or a nonlinear continuous variable and was equal to 9% using these modelling approaches (p < 0.001). The relationship between the CFS score and mortality was nonlinear (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Knowledge about a patient's frailty status adds a substantial amount of new prognostic information at the moment of admission to the ICU. Arbitrary simplification of the CFS score into fewer groups than originally intended leads to a loss of information and should be avoided. Trial registration NCT03134807 (VIP1), NCT03370692 (VIP2)
