    Investigation of an aircraft trailing vortex using a tuft grid

    With the increasing capacity of airport terminal areas, and the use of the new large jet transports, it has become important to understand the turbulent wake created by these aircraft. A study of the trailing vortex of a wing has been made using a tuft grid in a 6 foot wind tunnel. The study included an investigation of the use of mass injection at the wing tip as a means of destroying the vortex. Test results show that a fully developed, stable, vortex exists at least a distance of thirty chord lengths downstream of the wing, and that the swirl of the vortex can be reduced or eliminated by mass injection at the wing tip

    Recent improvements in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology have enabled detection of biomarkers in cell-free DNA in blood and may ultimately replace invasive tissue biopsies. However, a better understanding of the performance of blood-based NGS assays is needed prior to routine clinical use. As part of an IRBapproved molecular profiling registry trial of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) patients, we facilitated blood-based NGS testing of 34 patients from multiple community-based and high-volume academic oncology practices. 23 of these patients also underwent traditional tumor tissue-based NGS testing. cfDNA was not detected in 9/34 (26%) patients. Overall concordance between blood and tumor tissue NGS assays was low, with only 25% sensitivity of blood-based NGS for tumor tissue NGS. Mutations in KRAS, the major PDA oncogene, were only detected in 10/34 (29%) blood samples, compared to 20/23 (87%) tumor tissue biopsies. The presence of mutations in circulating DNA was associated with reduced overall survival (54% in mutation-positive versus 90% in mutation-negative). Our results suggest that in the setting of previously treated, advanced PDA, liquid biopsies are not yet an adequate substitute for tissue biopsies.     Disorder-to-order transition in the magnetic and electronic properties of URh_2Ge_2

    We present a study of annealing effects on the physical properties of tetragonal single--crystalline URh_2Ge_2. This system, which in as-grown form was recently established as the first metallic 3D random-bond heavy-fermion spin glass, is transformed by an annealing treatment into a long-range antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered heavy-fermion compound. The transport properties, which in the as-grown material were dominated by the structural disorder, exhibit in the annealed material signs of typical metallic behavior along the crystallographic a axis. From our study URh_2Ge_2 emerges as exemplary material highlighting the role and relevance of structural disorder for the properties of strongly correlated electron systems. We discuss the link between the magnetic and electronic behavior and how they are affected by the structural disorder.Comment: Phys. Rev. B, in print (scheduled 1 Mar 2000

    U.S. Army Small Space Update

    In December 2010, the U.S. Army flew its first satellite in 50 years, the SMDC-ONE CubeSat. Placed in a very low orbit, the first SMDC-ONE mission lasted only 35 days but enjoyed great success in demonstrating the viability of CubeSats to perform exfiltration of unattended ground sensors data and serve as a communications relay between ground stations over 1000 land miles apart. The success of SMDC-ONE helped shape the U.S. Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command’s (SMDC) programmatic goals for finding new and innovative ways to implement space applications and technologies that aid the warfighter. Since 2010, SMDC has flown ten additional CubeSats including the three SMDC Nanosatellite Program-3 (SNaP) CubeSats currently on orbit (launched October 2015). This paper addresses several SMDC satellite-related development efforts including SNaP, Army Resilient Global On-the-move SATCOM (ARGOS) Ka-band communications microsatellites, Kestrel Eye (an imaging microsatellite), Kestrel Eye Ground Station (KEGS), Common Ground Station (CGS) for all future Army small satellites, supporting technologies including Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) efforts, the Concepts Analysis Laboratory, SMDC Space Laboratory, the ACES RED effort and earlier responsive launch vehicle activities.     An Overview of the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign

    A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at 95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
