    Two instances of large genome profile picobirnavirus occurrence in Argentinian infants with diarrhea over a 26-year period (1977–2002)

    Background: Picobirnavirus’ (PBV) association with diarrhea in children is not reliably established and the potential role of pathogenic PBV needs further investigations. Objective: The aim of this study is to clarify the role of PBV in diarrhea illness in children. Methods: Between January 1977 and December 2002, 2224 stool specimens were collected from children <3 years old with diarrhea illness. All samples were analyzed by the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique (PAGE) for the presence of bisegmented dsRNA virus genomic pattern. Gels were dried and archived. This study procedure allowed us to keep a laboratory electrophoretic record of each sample assayed. In the present study, all the electrophoretic records were reviewed in order to identify PBV positive samples. Results: Two out of 2224 (0.09%) stools were positive for large genome profile of PBV. These two positive samples were collected from hospitalized children <1 year old; one of them presenting rotavirus co-infection. Conclusions: The findings obtained in the present report support strong evidence that large genome profile PBV can be considered more an occasional viral agent rather than an etiological agent associated with diarrheal illness.Fil: Giordano, Miguel Oscar.     Picobirnavirus causes persistent infection in pigs

    A study aimed to further understand the biology of porcine picobirnaviruses (PBV) was conducted between November 2003 and January 2008, on a farm located in the outskirts of Córdoba City, Argentina. PBV prevalence was examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining (PAGE S/S) on a total of 265 samples collected from pigs divided into four groups, according to age and physiological status. PBV detection rate was highest in the group of sows sampled within the lactogenic period (38.02%; p<0.05), followed by pregnant sows (15.09%), piglets aged 2-5 months of age (18.42%) and adult (≥50 weeks) male pigs (0%). In addition, 103 samples collected in 3 follow-up studies were analyzed by PAGE S/S and reverse transcription followed by PCR (RT-PCR). Two of these studies followed female pigs from weaning up to slaughter and a third one from weaning up to 4 pregnancy periods. The results provide evidence that PBV establishes a persistent infection in the host with periods of silence intermingled with periods of low and high viral excretion. High PBV excretion levels were detected by PAGE S/S and were conditioned by age (primary infection) and host physiological status. Low PBV excretion levels were detected by RT-PCR throughout the entire study period. Sequence analysis of selected amplicons indicated that the virus excreted through the follow-up study was the same. These results suggest that porcine PBV is maintained in nature by transmission from infected asymptomatic individuals to susceptible ones.Fil: Martinez, Laura Cecilia.     Detection of group a human rotavirus G9 genotype circulating in Córdoba, Argentina, as early as 1980

    The incidence of human rotavirus G types wasdetermined over a 25-year period (1979–2003) byusing reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) toexamine 519 stool specimens found to bepositive for rotavirus by enzyme linked immunosorbentassay (ELISA) or polyacrylamide gelelectrophoresis (PAGE). These stool sampleswere obtained from children under 3 years oldwho had been treated for acute diarrhea at publichospitals in Co´ rdoba, Argentina. The presentstudy describes the continued circulation of thecommon human G types G1 (53.8%), G2 (10.2%),G3 (4.4%), and G4 (27%), and also the detection ofthe unusual types G8 (0.5%) and G9 (4.2%).Genotype G9 was detected during the 1980–1988 and 1997–2003 periods at relatively lowrates. Rotavirus G types distribution was independentof age (1–18 months), gender or outpatientor in-patient status. Unexpectedly, 44.6%of mixed infections were detected, involvingcommon and unusual genotypes. Overall,95.4% of the typed strains belonged to the mostprevalent human serotypes (G1–G4) but thedetection of G9 infection throughout this studyperiod highlights the importance of this serotypeas a human pathogen.Fil: Barril, Patricia Angelica.     COOPEDU IV — Cooperação e Educação de Qualidade

    O quarto Congresso Internacional de Cooperação e Educação-IV COOPEDU, organizado pelo Centro de Estudos Internacionais (CEI) do Instituto Universitário de Lisboa e pela Escola Superior de Educação e Ciências Sociais do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria decorreu nos dias 8 e 9 de novembro de 2018, subordinado à temática Cooperação e Educação de Qualidade. Este congresso insere-se numa linha de continuidade de intervenção por parte das duas instituições organizadoras e dos elementos coordenadores e este ano beneficiou do financiamento do Instituto Camões, obtido através de um procedimento concursal, que nos permitiu contar com a participação presencial de elementos dos Países Africanos de Língua Portuguesa, fortemente implicados nas problemáticas da Educação e da Formação. Contou também com a participação do Instituto Camões e da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, entidades que sistematizaram a sua intervenção nos domínios da cooperação na área da educação nos últimos anos. A opção pela temática da qualidade pareceu aos organizadores pertinente e actual. Com efeito os sistemas educativos dos países que constituem a Comunidade de países de língua portuguesa têm implementado várias reformas mas em vários domínios mantem-se a insatisfação de responsáveis políticos, pedagogos, técnicos sociais face aos resultados obtidos. Aliás o caminho de procura da Qualidade é interminável porque vai a par da aposta na exigência e na promoção da cidadania e responsabilidade social. As comunicações que agora se publicam estão organizadas em dois eixos: o das Políticas da Educação e Formação e o das dimensões em que se traduzem essas políticas. Neste último eixo encontramos fios condutores para agregarmos as comunicações apresentadas

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in the diphoton decay channel at root s=13 TeV

    Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons are reported. Events are selected from a sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). Analysis categories enriched in Higgs boson events produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, vector boson associated production, and production associated with top quarks are constructed. The total Higgs boson signal strength, relative to the standard model (SM) prediction, is measured to be 1.12 +/- 0.09. Other properties of the Higgs boson are measured, including SM signal strength modifiers, production cross sections, and its couplings to other particles. These include the most precise measurements of gluon fusion and vector boson fusion Higgs boson production in several different kinematic regions, the first measurement of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair in five regions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, and an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson production in association with a single top quark. All results are found to be in agreement with the SM expectations.Peer reviewe
