Background: Iron Deficiency Anaemia in pregnancy is associated with intra uterine growth retardation, pre term labour, low birth weight baby and it also increases maternal and perinatal mortality. Methods: This KAP study was conducted for six months. All the pregnant women attending the outpatient department of Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical college and hospital, were provided with a predesigned questionnaire by the principal investigator. Data was collected after obtaining consent from 167 patients regarding their knowledge, attitude and practices towards anaemia. Results: In our study we found that women with age more than 25 years, advanced gestational age, educated participants and women belonging to higher socio-economic status showed adequate knowledge about anemia and its complications. Conclusions: Health Education plays an important role, in creating awareness among antenatal women and by implementing this into practice will help in prevention of anaemia

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The Aim of this works is to make an observation of aetiology, pathogenesis, clincial features, treatment, prognosis of vatha pandu noi. For the purpose of diagnosis the eight types of clinical investigation of siddha medicine (Ennvagai thervugal) and relavant modern diagnostic methods are also to be adopted. The selection of cases is to be made from the OPD-Department of Pothu Maruthuvam, Government Siddha Medical College and hospitals, Palayamkottai. The patients are given with “Karaisalankanni chooranam”. The dynamic approach deals very much in detail with the work done with devotion and dedication to bring out the following objectives are, To collect various siddha literatures dealing with nomenclature, defintion, aetiology, classification, signs and symptoms, Naadi, diagnosis, diet, prognosis, complications of “Vatha Pandu Noi” in Siddha system of medicine. To know the extent to which the correlation of Aetiology, classification, signs and symptoms of Pandu Noi in Siddha medicine as well as modern medicine. To expose the efficacy of Siddhar’s diagnostic principles. (Envagai Thervugal) To have some idea about the disease like incidence, prevalance and surveilance of the disease. To know the clinical and therapeutic efficacy of the trial medicine. Biochemical, pharmocological studies which have been ruled out to find the potency and free toxic effect of the trial drug. To evaluate the safety profile drug of the trial medicine Karisalankanni Chooranam. CONCLUSION: The dissertation medicine “Karisalankanni chooranam” is the potent drug for the remedy of Iron Deficiency Anemia. Research finding shows that 80% of the inpatients was improved well and 15% of the inpatients was moderately improved and 5% of the inpatients were poorly improved. 75 % of the outpatients was improved well and 15% of the outpatients was moderately improved and10 % of the outpatients was poorly improved. The trial medicine was very effective to the patients and there was no recurrence of symptoms. The trial medicine is pure herbal formulation and it is free from side effects, so they are useful for long term purpose. If the man strictly adheres to the Siddha’s principle he will lead a healthy and happy life.Out of 40 patients, 31 cases (77.5%) show good result, 6 cases (15%) show moderate result, 3 cases(7.5%) show mild result

E-learning as a tool to impart knowledge of surgical procedures in the undergraduate medical teaching

Background: E-learning is in a budding stage in developing countries. As present-day students are gadget-friendly, introducing a surgical e-learning module may create interest and help in understanding the surgeries easily. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of E-learning in improving the knowledge component of surgical procedures for undergraduate students and to analyze students’ feedback regarding its usefulness. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted among 67 final-year MBBS students, who had completed 1 week of operation theatre (OT) posting in obstetrics and gynecology. Recording of videos for must-know surgeries in gynecology was done. Video editing and audio description of surgical steps were done. A YouTube channel was created and surgical videos were uploaded. Links to 2 surgical videos and additional teaching materials were uploaded to the college learning management system daily for 2 consecutive weeks. A telegram group was formed for posting questions daily. Pre-test and post-test were conducted and the results were analyzed. Results: The mean marks obtained in the pre-test were 6.567±1.9 and the post-test was 15.22±2.5 (Paired t test p=0.0001). Students mentioned that combining OT posting with an e-learning module helped them to build their knowledge of surgical procedures. Telegram quizzes helped them to increase their understanding of surgeries. 34 students wanted e-learning module to be conducted on other topics also. Conclusions: E-learning is highly effective in improving knowledge component of surgical procedures for undergraduate students. E-learning can be made more effective by adding formative assessment. Combining surgical e-learning module with operation theatre posting can enhance knowledge and understanding

    Mitochondria and Lysosomes: Discovering Bonds

    No full text
In the last decade, the traditional view of lysosomes has been challenged by the recognition that lysosomes are not only degradative organelles, but also metabolic sensors that play a key role in the regulation of metabolism and cell growth. Similarly, mitochondria are now seen as crucial metabolic hubs dictating cell fate decisions, not just ATP-producing machines. Importantly, these functions are generally performed as a coordinate response of distinct organelles that are physically and functionally connected. While the association between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum is well known, a similar interaction between mitochondria and lysosomes is now emerging. This interaction could be required to shuttle amino acids, lipids and ions such as Ca2+ between the two organelles, thereby modulating their metabolic functions. In addition, a tethering complex linking the two organelles has recently been described in yeast, although the mammalian counterpart has yet to be identified. Here, we discuss the implications of these recent findings

Tribological performance of aluminium hybrid self-lubricating composites reinforced with green synthesized graphene

In this contemporary research work, graphene nanosheets were synthesized by the green method using agricultural waste and characterized by FESEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Vortex liquid metallurgy technique is used to fabricate AA7075 hybrid composites reinforced with graphene and hard ceramic. The samples were evaluated for tensile strength, hardness and tribological behaviour. The influencing wear parameters percentage of graphene reinforcement, load, sliding speed and sliding distance were varied three levels each. An empirical relationship was formulated using face-centred central composite design considering wear weight loss and coefficient of friction as output responses. The influencing parameters on the output responses were determined by employing analysis of variance and the objective is to find the optimal process parameters. Graphene enriched the mechanical and wear behaviour. The composite having a 0.5 reinforcement percentage of graphene exhibited higher hardness and higher tensile strength. The optimal combination of tribological parameters for minimum wear loss and friction coefficient was found for 0.5% of graphene reinforcement, 30 N load, 2.5 m s ^−1 sliding speed, 1000 m sliding distance. The worn surface was also analyzed using FESEM and inverted microscope images
