Critique [of Institutional Racism]
Vine Deloria’s incisive analysis of institutional racism in western culture applies equally well to the related problem of institutional sexism. Both women, and minorities especially individual members of minority racial groups who are immediately recognizable by members of the dominant white culture - belong to a caste rather than a class in western society. As such, we are all subjected by the traditions of white male philosophical. and intellectual processes as much as by existing socio-political institutions to the different varieties of exclusion, co-optation and disempowerment that Deloria outlines. In the past decade particularly, women’s situation in American political and institutional life has replicated the stasis and frustration experienced by racial minorities for many years preceding
[Review of] Trudier Harris. Black Women in the Fiction of James Baldwin
Trudier Harris walks a narrow line between a feminist critique of James Baldwin\u27s shortcomings as a masculinist writer and a critical appreciation of the complexity and progression in Baldwin\u27s fictional portrayals of black women. It is not an easy maneuver, but her balance is sure and steady

AVIRIS onboard data handling and control
The timing and flow of detector and ancillary data for the Airborne Visible/Infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) are controlled within the instrument by its digital electronics assembly. In addition to providing detector and signal chain timing, the digital electronics receives, formats, and rate-buffers digitized science data; collects and formats ancillary (calibration and engineering) data; and merges both into a single tape record. Overall AVIRIS data handling is effected by a combination of dedicated digital electronics to control instrument timing, image data flow, and data rate buffering and a microcomputer programmed to handle real-time control of instrument mechanisms and the coordinated preparation of ancillary data
[Review of] Hadley Irwin, We Are Mesquakie, We Are One
We Are Mesquakie, We Are One by Hadley Irwin is the simply and sensitively told tale of a Mesquakie Indian girl who comes of age during a turbulent period in the history of her nation. In 1845, after fifteen years of treaties, the Mesquakie (sometimes also called the Fox) Indians were expelled from their lands along the Iowa River and forcibly marched to Kansas, where they were relocated on reservation lands far inferior to their own. The Mesquakies managed to avoid being acculturated into white ways, and over a period of years saved the money they got from the U.S. Government and bought back their original lands. From 1852 on, they gradually returned to Iowa, rejoining a few courageous members of their tribe who had stayed, in defiance of the Bluecoats who burned their villages and the white settlers who appropriated their land, in order to keep alive the dream of reclaiming their home
Nourishing Nordics: A Celebration of Sustainable Foodways in Scandinavia
On April 15, 2019, I will host the event “Nourishing Nordics” to explore sustainable foodways of Scandinavia. There will be tasting of local and organic foods, education about sustainable farming, Scandinavian genealogy, and musical performances. The purpose of this event will be to educate students and the public about local sustainable vendors in Cache Valley. Utah is ranked 9th worst in the nation for access to local food. We have two food desserts in our area where people are unable to access fresh products. Scandinavia, on the other hand, leads the world with its devotion to sustainability and promotion of eco-friendly lifestyles. Local and organic foods are the norm, while recycling and composting are prioritized. This event will give Utahans and students at Utah State University the opportunity to try these foods and learn about the sustainable practices of their Scandinavian ancestors. As a public relations student, I will discuss planning for this event, connecting with local vendors, creating a press kit, and interacting with the media. I will also highlight the objectives, strategies, and tactics I used to develop this event
Computing Persistence Diagram Bundles
Persistence diagram (PD) bundles, a generalization of vineyards, were
introduced as a way to study the persistent homology of a set of filtrations
parameterized by a topological space . In this paper, we present an
algorithm for computing piecewise-linear PD bundles, a wide class that includes
many of the PD bundles that one may encounter in practice. Full details are
given for the case in which is a triangulated surface, and we outline the
generalization to higher dimensions and other cases.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. Expository changes throughou
