    Droplet impact onto moving liquids

    From rain drops landing on the ocean to inkjet printing, the impact of droplets onto moving liquid surfaces is a ubiquitous process in nature and in industry. A rich range of phenomena can arise. The behaviour depends on the inertia, the properties of the drops and the relative speeds in the impact zone. While the result ranges from tranquil coalescence to violent splashing, intermediate regimes also occur, including partial and complete bouncing and even 'surfing' of the droplet. These regimes are determined by the ratio of the drop and surface velocities and the liquid properties.     Investigating the trade-off between the effectiveness and efficiency of process modeling

    Despite recent efforts to improve the quality of process models, we still observe a significant dissimilarity in quality between models. This paper focuses on the syntactic condition of process models, and how it is achieved. To this end, a dataset of 121 modeling sessions was investigated. By going through each of these sessions step by step, a separate ‘revision’ phase was identified for 81 of them. Next, by cutting the modeling process off at the start of the revision phase, a partial process model was exported for these modeling sessions. Finally, each partial model was compared with its corresponding final model, in terms of time, effort, and the number of syntactic errors made or solved, in search for a possible trade-off between the effectiveness and efficiency of process modeling. Based on the findings, we give a provisional explanation for the difference in syntactic quality of process models

    Downscaling GLDAS Soil Moisture Data in East Asia through Fusion of Multi-Sensors by Optimizing Modified Regression Trees

    Soilmoisture is a key part of Earth's climate systems, including agricultural and hydrological cycles. Soil moisture data from satellite and numerical models is typically provided at a global scale with coarse spatial resolution, which is not enough for local and regional applications. In this study, a soil moisture downscaling model was developed using satellite-derived variables targeting Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) soil moisture as a reference dataset in East Asia based on the optimization of a modified regression tree. A total of six variables, Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) and Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) soil moisture products, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products, including Land Surface Temperature, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and land cover, were used as input variables. The optimization was conducted through a pruning approach for operational use, and finally 59 rules were extracted based on root mean square errors (RMSEs) and correlation coefficients (r). The developed downscaling model showed a good modeling performance (r = 0.79, RMSE = 0.056 m(3)center dot m(3), and slope = 0.74). The 1 km downscaled soil moisture showed similar time series patterns with both GLDAS and ground soil moisture and good correlation with ground soil moisture (average r = 0.47, average RMSD = 0.038 m(3)center dot m(3)) at 14 ground stations. The spatial distribution of 1 km downscaled soil moisture reflected seasonal and regional characteristics well, although the model did not result in good performance over a few areas such as Southern China due to very high cloud cover rates. The results of this study are expected to be helpful in operational use to monitor soil moisture throughout East Asia since the downscaling model produces daily high resolution (1 km) real time soil moisture with a low computational demand. This study yielded a promising result to operationally produce daily high resolution soil moisture data from multiple satellite sources, although there are yet several limitations. In future research, more variables including Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) precipitation, Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) soil moisture, and other vegetation indices will be integrated to improve the performance of the proposed soil moisture downscaling model.ope

    An accurate test for homogeneity of odds ratios based on Cochran's Q-statistic

    Background: A frequently used statistic for testing homogeneity in a meta-analysis of K independent studies is Cochran's Q. For a standard test of homogeneity the Q statistic is referred to a chi-square distribution with K - 1 degrees of freedom. For the situation in which the effects of the studies are logarithms of odds ratios, the chi-square distribution is much too conservative for moderate size studies, although it may be asymptotically correct as the individual studies become large. Methods: Using a mixture of theoretical results and simulations, we provide formulas to estimate the shape and scale parameters of a gamma distribution to t the distribution of Q. Results: Simulation studies show that the gamma distribution is a good approximation to the distribution for Q. Conclusions: : Use of the gamma distribution instead of the chi-square distribution for Q should eliminate inaccurate inferences in assessing homogeneity in a meta-analysis.     Spin-orbit torque in Pt/CoNiCo/Pt symmetric devices

    Current induced magnetization switching by spin-orbit torques offers an energy-efficient means of writing information in heavy metal/ferromagnet (FM) multilayer systems. The relative contributions of field-like torques and damping-like torques to the magnetization switching induced by the electrical current are still under debate. Here, we describe a device based on a symmetric Pt/FM/Pt structure, in which we demonstrate a strong damping-like torque from the spin Hall effect and unmeasurable field-like torque from Rashba effect. The spin-orbit effective fields due to the spin Hall effect were investigated quantitatively and were found to be consistent with the switching effective fields after accounting for the switching current reduction due to thermal fluctuations from the current pulse. A non-linear dependence of deterministic switching of average Mzon the in-plane magnetic field was revealed, which could be explained and understood by micromagnetic simulation

    Construct and face validity of SINERGIA laparoscopic virtual reality simulator

    Purpose Laparoscopic techniques have nowadays become a gold standard in many surgical procedures, but they imply a more difficult learning skills process. Simulators have a fundamental role in the formative stage of new surgeons. This paper presents the construct and face validity of SINERGIA laparoscopic virtual reality simulator in order to decide whether it can be considered as an assessment tool. Methods Twenty people participated in this study, 14 were novices and 6 were experts. Five tasks of SINERGIA were included in the study: coordination, navigation, navigation and touch, precise grasping and coordinate traction. For each one of these tasks, a certain number of metrics are automatically recorded. All subjects accomplished each task only once and filled in two questionnaires. A statistical analysis was made and results from both groups were compared with the Mann–Whitney U-test, considering significant differences when P ≤ 0.05. Internal consistency of the system has been analyzed with the Cronbach’s alpha test. Results Novices and experts positively rated SINERGIA characteristics. At least one of the evaluated metrics of each exercise presented significant differences between both groups. Nevertheless, all metrics under study gave a better punctuation to the executions accomplished by experts (lower time, higher efficiency, fewer errors. . .) than to those made by novices. Conclusion SINERGIA laparoscopic virtual reality simulator is able to discriminate subjects according to their level of experience in laparoscopic surgery; therefore, it can be used within a training program as an assessment too

    Femtosecond control of electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures

    The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics, causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser pulses. Employing terahertz (1012^{12} Hz) emission spectroscopy, we demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of the circularly polarized light. These results open up new opportunities for realizing spintronics in the unprecedented terahertz regime and provide new insights in all-optical control of magnetism.Comment: 3 figures and 2 tables in the main tex

    Identifying the Location in the Host Galaxy of the Short GRB 111117A with the Chandra Sub-arcsecond Position

    We present our successful Chandra program designed to identify, with sub-arcsecond accuracy, the X-ray afterglow of the short GRB 111117A, which was discovered by Swift and Fermi. Thanks to our rapid target of opportunity request, Chandra clearly detected the X-ray afterglow, though no optical afterglow was found in deep optical observations. The host galaxy was clearly detected in the optical and near-infrared band, with the best photometric redshift of z=1.31_{-0.23}^{+0.46} (90% confidence), making it one of the highest known short GRB redshifts. Furthermore, we see an offset of 1.0 +- 0.2 arcseconds, which corresponds to 8.4 +- 1.7 kpc, between the host and the afterglow position. We discuss the importance of using Chandra for obtaining sub-arcsecond X-ray localizations of short GRB afterglows to study GRB environments.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Evolution of the Early-Type Galaxy Fraction in Clusters since z = 0.8

    We study the morphological content of a large sample of high-redshift clusters to determine its dependence on cluster mass and redshift. Quantitative morphologies are based on bulge+disk decompositions of cluster and field galaxies on deep VLT/FORS2 images of 18 optically-selected clusters at 0.45 < z < 0.80 from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS). Morphological content is given by the early-type galaxy fraction f_et, and early-type galaxies are selected based on their bulge fraction and image smoothness. A set of 158 SDSS clusters is analyzed exactly as the EDisCS sample to provide a robust local comparison. Our main results are: (1) f_et values for the SDSS and EDisCS clusters exhibit no clear trend as a function of sigma. (2) Mid-z EDisCS clusters around sigma = 500 km/s have f_et ~= 0.5 whereas high-z EDisCS clusters have f_et ~= 0.4 (~25% increase over 2 Gyrs). (3) There is a marked difference in the morphological content of EDisCS and SDSS clusters. None of the EDisCS clusters have f_et greater than 0.6 whereas half of the SDSS clusters lie above this value. This difference is seen in clusters of all velocity dispersions. (4) There is a strong correlation between morphology and star formation in SDSS and EDisCS clusters. This correlation holds independent of sigma and z even though the fraction of [OII] emitters decreases from z~0.8 to z~0.06 in all environments. Our results pose an interesting challenge to structural transformation and star formation quenching processes that strongly depend on the global cluster environment and suggest that cluster membership may be of lesser importance than other variables in determining galaxy properties.     OTELO Survey: Deep BVRI broadband photometry of the Groth strip. II Properties of X-ray Emitters

    The Groth field is one of the sky regions that will be targeted by the OTELO (OSIRIS Tunable Filter Emission Line Object) survey in the optical 820 nm and 920 nm atmospheric windows. This field has been observed by AEGIS (All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey) covering the full spectral range, from X-rays to radio waves. Chandra X-ray data with total exposure time of 200ksec are analyzed and combined with optical broadband data of the Groth field in order to study a set of structural parameters of the X-ray emitters and its relation with X-ray properties. We processed the raw, public X-ray data using the Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations and determined and analyzed different structural parameters in order to produce a morphological classification of X-ray sources. Finally, we analyzed the angular clustering of these sources using 2-point correlation functions. We present a catalog of 340 X-ray emitters with optical counterpart. We obtained the number counts and compared them with AEGIS data. Objects have been classified by nuclear type using a diagnostic diagram relating X-ray-to-optical ratio (X/O) to hardness ratio (HR). Also, we combined structural parameters with other X-ray and optical properties, and found for the first time an anticorrelation between the X/O ratio and the Abraham concentration index which might suggest that early type galaxies have lower Eddington rates than those of late type galaxies. A significant positive angular clustering was obtained from a preliminary analysis of 4 subsamples of the X-ray sources catalog. The clustering signal of the opticaly extended counterparts is similar to that of strongly clustered populations like red and very red galaxies, suggesting that the environment plays an important role in AGN phenomena.Comment: 23 pages, 19 Postscript figure
