Real Lives; Real Difference: Service User and Carer Involvement in Professional Education. Conference Summary Report
First paragraph: On the 4th of June 2013, eight Scottish universities involved in the Scottish Inter-University Social Work Service User and Carers' Network, supported by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS), collaborated to produce the first national service user and carer conference aimed at highlighting the importance of involving people who have experience of using Social Work and/or health services in the education of Social Workers and other professionals. The day was deemed "interesting, informative and successful" and involved approximately 45 people delivering presentations and workshops to just over 100 conference delegates. The one-day conference included a keynote speaker and a research presentation delivered by leading academics in Social Work education, poetry recitations delivered by a Social Work service user and workshops delivered by Social Work and Nursing academics, Service Users and carers and social work students
Gravity duals of supersymmetric gauge theories on three-manifolds
We study gravity duals to a broad class of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories
defined on a general class of three-manifold geometries. The gravity
backgrounds are based on Euclidean self-dual solutions to four-dimensional
gauged supergravity. As well as constructing new examples, we prove in general
that for solutions defined on the four-ball the gravitational free energy
depends only on the supersymmetric Killing vector, finding a simple closed
formula when the solution has U(1) x U(1) symmetry. Our result agrees with the
large N limit of the free energy of the dual gauge theory, computed using
localization. This constitutes an exact check of the gauge/gravity
correspondence for a very broad class of gauge theories with a large N limit,
defined on a general class of background three-manifold geometries.Comment: 74 pages, 2 figures; v2: minor change
M-Theory on Spin(7) Manifolds
We study M-theory on two classes of manifolds of Spin(7) holonomy that are
developing an isolated conical singularity. We construct explicitly a new class
of Spin(7) manifolds and analyse in detail the topology of the corresponding
classical spacetimes. We discover also an intricate interplay between various
anomalies in M-theory, string theory, and gauge theory within these models, and
in particular find a connection between half-integral G-fluxes in M-theory and

Supersymmetric AdS_5 Solutions of Type IIB Supergravity
We analyse the most general bosonic supersymmetric solutions of type IIB
supergravity whose metrics are warped products of five-dimensional anti-de
Sitter space AdS_5 with a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold M_5. All fluxes
are allowed to be non-vanishing consistent with SO(4,2) symmetry. We show that
the necessary and sufficient conditions can be phrased in terms of a local
identity structure on M_5. For a special class, with constant dilaton and
vanishing axion, we reduce the problem to solving a second order non-linear
ODE. We find an exact solution of the ODE which reproduces a solution first
found by Pilch and Warner. A numerical analysis of the ODE reveals an
additional class of local solutions.Comment: 33 page
Reducible connections and non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations
We construct the most general reducible connection that satisfies the
self-dual Yang-Mills equations on a simply connected, open subset of flat
. We show how all such connections lie in the orbit of the flat
connection on under the action of non-local symmetries of the
self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Such connections fit naturally inside a larger
class of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations that are analogous to

Cell-active Small Molecule Inhibitors of the DNA-damage Repair Enzyme Poly(ADP-ribose) Glycohydrolase (PARG) : Discovery and Optimization of Orally Bioavailable Quinazolinedione Sulfonamides

damage repair enzymes are promising targets in the development
of new therapeutic agents for a wide range of cancers and potentially
other diseases. The enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) glycohydrolase (PARG)
plays a pivotal role in the regulation of DNA repair mechanisms; however,
the lack of potent drug-like inhibitors for use in cellular and in
vivo models has limited the investigation of its potential as a novel
therapeutic target. Using the crystal structure of human PARG in complex
with the weakly active and cytotoxic anthraquinone <b>8a</b>, novel quinazolinedione sulfonamides PARG inhibitors have been identified
by means of structure-based virtual screening and library design.

A framework for the development of a global standardised marine taxon reference image database (SMarTaR-ID) to support image-based analyses
Video and image data are regularly used in the field of benthic ecology to document biodiversity. However, their use is subject to a number of challenges, principally the identification of taxa within the images without associated physical specimens. The challenge of applying traditional taxonomic keys to the identification of fauna from images has led to the development of personal, group, or institution level reference image catalogues of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) or morphospecies. Lack of standardisation among these reference catalogues has led to problems with observer bias and the inability to combine datasets across studies. In addition, lack of a common reference standard is stifling efforts in the application of artificial intelligence to taxon identification. Using the North Atlantic deep sea as a case study, we propose a database structure to facilitate standardisation of morphospecies image catalogues between research groups and support future use in multiple front-end applications. We also propose a framework for coordination of international efforts to develop reference guides for the identification of marine species from images. The proposed structure maps to the Darwin Core standard to allow integration with existing databases. We suggest a management framework where high-level taxonomic groups are curated by a regional team, consisting of both end users and taxonomic experts. We identify a mechanism by which overall quality of data within a common reference guide could be raised over the next decade. Finally, we discuss the role of a common reference standard in advancing marine ecology and supporting sustainable use of this ecosystem
Velocity-space sensitivity of the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at JET
The velocity-space sensitivities of fast-ion diagnostics are often described by so-called weight functions. Recently, we formulated weight functions showing the velocity-space sensitivity of the often dominant beam-target part of neutron energy spectra. These weight functions for neutron emission spectrometry (NES) are independent of the particular NES diagnostic. Here we apply these NES weight functions to the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR at JET. By taking the instrumental response function of TOFOR into account, we calculate time-of-flight NES weight functions that enable us to directly determine the velocity-space sensitivity of a given part of a measured time-of-flight spectrum from TOFOR
