    Painting for effect – using material process and technique to create atmosphere and eeriness in paintings of domestic interiors and spaces.

    Starting with me sitting in my living room and deciding I wanted to paint the walls that surrounded me, my practice delves into an intricate web of questions surrounding themes of atmosphere, eeriness, experience, encounters, nothingness and the unknown and has had a natural progression into the realms of what I can only describe as an unknown experience of our daily domestic encounters. By photographing and painting domestic interiors and spaces, my work attempts to pinpoint the exact moment if and when the effects of atmosphere and eeriness are created and understanding whether specific painting techniques can be the reason for these effects. Is it from the colour the walls have been painted in? Is it the subject and space that is being represented? Or does it originate in the processes that lead up to making the painting. I am also investigating how paintings can affect our mood and feeling when being viewed. This could be through how and where they are exhibited or through the enhancement of other senses when being viewed e.g., playing certain music in the exhibition space. In order to investigate how we can create these effects and affects in paintings I am attempting to answer questions such as, how do we represent and interoperate the space in our everyday domestic places? What exactly is the eerie and where does it come from? My theory is that through the different ways we create paintings we can alter and change the effect they give. By writing this essay I will hopefully begin to understand if there can be a specific method for creating effects. I am using my painting practice to underline this essay to incorporate theory with practice and will use my painting practice at the end of the essay as a way of testing out theories that are generated throughout. I have included some images of my paintings that best demonstrate my practice. This will help the reader visualise my practice before reading the essay

    Exploring factors associated with aggressive behaviour in adolescents

    This thesis examines the factors associated with aggressive behaviour in adolescents. It contains an introduction to the thesis. Chapter one contains a systematic literature review investigating the relationship between video game violence and aggressive behaviours in adolescents. The results of the review indicated that there is some evidence to suggest a link exists between exposure to violent video games and aggressive behaviour. Chapter two contains a piece of empirical research examining the relationship between exposure to violence in video games and aggressive behaviours in a sample of adolescents. Further, it explored possible mediators and moderators of this relationship. The results of this research found a relationship between exposure to violence in video games and aggressive behaviour. In addition, this study found that hostile attribution bias, empathy and exposure to real life violence moderated this relationship. Chapter three is a case study describing the psychological assessment, formulation and planned intervention with a young person presenting with aggressive behaviours. A number of treatment considerations and potential obstacles to treatment with this population are discussed. Chapter four consists of a critical review of the Psychological Inventory of Criminal Thinking Styles (Version 3.0). This review examines reported reliability and validity data for the measure as well as its limitations.     A simple and efficient micrografting method for stably transformed Nicotiana attenuata plants to examine shoot-root signaling

    To adjust their development to the environment, plants rely on specific signals that travel from shoot to root and vice versa. Here we describe an efficient micrografting protocol for Nicotiana attenuata, a useful tool for identifying these signals and understanding their functions. Additionally we analyzed transcript accumulation profiles of scions and rootstocks of grafts performed with wild-type and stably transformed N. attenuata. Our results are consistent with the source-to-sink movement of an sRNA silencing signal

    A Q-methodological study of 'smoking identities'

    publication-status: Publishedtypes: ArticleIn contrast to the psychological literature on adolescent smoking, little research has investigated the social identities of adult smokers. This study aimed to identify shared ‘smoking identities’ amongst a sample of 64 British smokers from different socio-economic groups using Q-methodology. Participants were asked to sort 70 items concerning smoking and smokers according to their agreement/disagreement with them. The 64 Q-sorts were then subjected to a by-person factor analysis yielding six factors, with the first four interpretable factors being presented here. Each factor is understood to represent a distinct ‘identity position’. The first two, the ‘addicted’ smoker, and the ‘in control’ smoker, oriented around a biomedical model of smoking as an addictive health risk. The final two, the ‘no big deal’ smoker and the ‘proud’ smoker reflected alternative understandings and values. The identity positions also differed in the extent to which smoking was considered a core part of self-identity.     Inferring bacterial transmission dynamics using deep sequencing genomic surveillance data

    Within host variation is increasingly being cited as a tool to distinguish transmission pairs. However, the role of within-host diversity in transmission is understudied due to a lack of experimental and clinical datasets that capture within-host diversity in both donors and recipients. Here, we assess the utility of deep-sequenced genomic surveillance within a mouse transmission model where the gastrointestinal pathogen Citrobacter rodentium was controllably spread during co-housing of infected and naïve animals. We observed that within 38 host variants were maintained over multiple transmission steps until fixation or elimination and present a model for inferring the likelihood that a given pair of samples are linked by transmission, by comparing the allelic frequency at variant genomic loci. Because within-host single nucleotide variants (iSNVs) can repeatedly pass from donor to recipient along the transmission chain, sharing of iSNVs offers limited discriminatory power in identifying a transmission pair. Beyond the presence and absence of within-host variants, we show that differences arising in the relative abundance of iSNVs (allelic frequency) can infer transmission pairs more precisely. However, in applying this method it is important to carefully consider routes of transmission, bottleneck sizes and mutation rates. Additionally, genomic artefacts must be carefully curated to avoid spurious inferences of transmission. An important component of our approach is that the inference is based solely on sequence data, without incorporating epidemiological or demographic data for context.     The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment

    The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use.     Variations in cardiovascular disease under-diagnosis in England: national cross-sectional spatial analysis

    BACKGROUND: There is under-diagnosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the English population, despite financial incentives to encourage general practices to register new cases. We compared the modelled (expected) and diagnosed (observed) prevalence of three cardiovascular conditions- coronary heart disease (CHD), hypertension and stroke- at local level, their geographical variation, and population and healthcare predictors which might influence diagnosis. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study in all English local authorities (351) and general practices (8,372) comparing model-based expected prevalence with diagnosed prevalence on practice disease registers. Spatial analyses were used to identify geographic clusters and variation in regression relationships. RESULTS: A total of 9,682,176 patients were on practice CHD, stroke and transient ischaemic attack, and hypertension registers. There was wide spatial variation in observed: expected prevalence ratios for all three diseases, with less than five per cent of expected cases diagnosed in some areas. London and the surrounding area showed statistically significant discrepancies in observed: expected prevalence ratios, with observed prevalence much lower than the epidemiological models predicted. The addition of general practitioner supply as a variable yielded stronger regression results for all three conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Despite almost universal access to free primary healthcare, there may be significant and highly variable under-diagnosis of CVD across England, which can be partially explained by persistent inequity in GP supply. Disease management studies should consider the possible impact of under-diagnosis on population health outcomes. Compared to classical regression modelling, spatial analytic techniques can provide additional information on risk factors for under-diagnosis, and can suggest where healthcare resources may be most needed
