    Reye Syndrome Associated with Vaccination with Live Virus Vaccines

    To determine whether vaccination with live virus vaccines may be etiologi cally related to Reye syndrome, we examined 404 cases reported to the Center for Disease Control. Fifteen of 269 children with Reye syndrome had been inoculated with live virus vaccines within 30 days before onset of illness. Although this temporal relationship may have occurred by chance, seasonal distribution and clustering of incubation periods suggests that live virus vaccines may occasionally serve as cofactors in the etiology of Reye syndrome through undefined mechanisms.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66647/2/10.1177_000992287901800105.pd

    Magnetic evolution of superactive regions. Complexity and potentially unstable magnetic discontinuities

    In this work, we have studied the temporal evolution of some properties of a sample of superactive regions with the aim to single out the most significant for flare activity forecasting. We have investigated properties of 14 superactive regions, observed between January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2006 with MDI/SOHO instrument and characterized by a particularly intense flare activity during their passage on the solar disk. We have analyzed the temporal evolution of fractal and multifractal properties of photospheric magnetic fields, namely the generalized fractal dimension and the cntribution and dimensionality diversities, as well as the potential unstable volumes of magnetic discontinuities above the studied ARs. Correlations of these quantities with the flare index, which provides information about the flare activity of a region, have also been estimated. We found that in 50 % of our sample the generalized fractal dimension is correlated with the flare index computed over windows of 50 hours, while the contribution diversity and the dimensional diversity are anticorrelated with the same index. An increase of the potential unstable volume of magnetic discontinuities in the corona is observed before the phases characterized by more frequent and intense flares. We also found that the free energy distribution functions of unstable volumes of the analyzed superactive regions can be fitted with straight lines whose slope is larger than the values found in previous works for less active magnetic regions. The generalized fractal dimension and the potential unstable volume of magnetic discontinuities are the most suitable for statistical investigations of relations with flare activity over longer (50 hours) and shorter (few hours) time intervals, respectively

    In this study, the nonlinear analysis of the sunspot index is embedded in the non-extensive statistical theory of Tsallis. The triplet of Tsallis, as well as the correlation dimension and the Lyapunov exponent spectrum were estimated for the SVD components of the sunspot index timeseries. Also the multifractal scaling exponent spectrum, the generalized Renyi dimension spectrum and the spectrum of the structure function exponents were estimated experimentally and theoretically by using the entropy principle included in Tsallis non extensive statistical theory, following Arimitsu and Arimitsu. Our analysis showed clearly the following: a) a phase transition process in the solar dynamics from high dimensional non Gaussian SOC state to a low dimensional non Gaussian chaotic state, b) strong intermittent solar turbulence and anomalous (multifractal) diffusion solar process, which is strengthened as the solar dynamics makes phase transition to low dimensional chaos in accordance to Ruzmaikin, Zeleny and Milovanov studies c) faithful agreement of Tsallis non equilibrium statistical theory with the experimental estimations of i) non-Gaussian probability distribution function, ii) multifractal scaling exponent spectrum and generalized Renyi dimension spectrum, iii) exponent spectrum of the structure functions estimated for the sunspot index and its underlying non equilibrium solar dynamics.Comment: 40 pages, 11 figure

    First paragraph: ‘It is as easy to make sweeping statements about reading tastes as to indict a nation, and as pointless.’ This jocular remark by a librarian made in the Times in 1952 sums up the dangers and difficulties of writing the history of reading. As a field of study in the humanities it is still in its infancy and encompasses a range of different methodologies and theoretical approaches. Historians of reading are not solely interested in what people read, but also turn their attention to the why, where and how of the reading experience. Reading can be solitary, silent, secret, surreptitious; it can be oral, educative, enforced, or assertive of a collective identity. For what purposes are individuals reading? How do they actually use books and other textual material? What are the physical environments and spaces of reading? What social, educational, technological, commercial, legal, or ideological contexts underpin reading practices? Finding answers to these questions is compounded by the difficulty of locating and interpreting evidence. As Mary Hammond points out, ‘most reading acts in history remain unrecorded, unmarked or forgotten’. Available sources are wide but inchoate: diaries, letters and autobiographies; personal and oral testimonies; marginalia; and records of societies and reading groups all lend themselves more to the case-study approach than the historical survey. Statistics offer analysable data but have the effect of producing identikits rather than actual human beings. The twenty-first century affords further possibilities, and challenges, with its traces of digital reader activity, but the map is ever-changing
