Cross-section measurements of top-quark pair production where the hadronically decaying top quark has transverse momentum greater than 355 GeV and the other top quark decays into ℓνb are presented using 139 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment during proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The fiducial cross-section at s = 13 TeV is measured to be σ = 1.267 ± 0.005 ± 0.053 pb, where the uncertainties reflect the limited number of data events and the systematic uncertainties, giving a total uncertainty of 4.2%. The cross-section is measured differentially as a function of variables characterising the tt¯ system and additional radiation in the events. The results are compared with various Monte Carlo generators, including comparisons where the generators are reweighted to match a parton-level calculation at next-to-next-to-leading order. The reweighting improves the agreement between data and theory. The measured distribution of the top-quark transverse momentum is used to search for new physics in the context of the effective field theory framework. No significant deviation from the Standard Model is observed and limits are set on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six operators OtG and Otq(8), where the limits on the latter are the most stringent to date. - Field of study
The design and performance of the inner detector trigger for the high level trigger of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider during the 2016-2018 data taking period is discussed. In 2016, 2017, and 2018 the ATLAS detector recorded 35.6 fb(-1), 46.9 fb(-1), and 60.6 fb(-1) respectively of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV. In order to deal with the very high interaction multiplicities per bunch crossing expected with the 13TeV collisions the inner detector trigger was redesigned during the long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider from 2013 until 2015. An overview of these developments is provided and the performance of the tracking in the trigger for the muon, electron, tau and b-jet signatures is discussed. The high performance of the inner detector trigger with these extreme interaction multiplicities demonstrates how the inner detector tracking continues to lie at the heart of the trigger performance and is essential in enabling the ATLAS physics programme

- Field of study
The production of phi mesons in the reaction e(+)p --> e(+)phi p (phi --> K+K-) at a median Q(2) of 10(-4) GeV2 has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential phi photoproduction cross section d sigma/dt has an exponential shape and has been determined in the kinematic range 0.1 phi p) = 0.96+/-0.19(-0.18)(+0.21) mu b has been obtained by extrapolating to t = 0. When compared to lower energy data, the results show a weak energy dependence of both sigma(gamma-->phi p) and the slope of the t distribution. The phi decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. From lower energies to HERA energies, the features of phi photoproduction are compatible with those of a soft diffractive process

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of charged particles in photoproduction events in the laboratory pseudorapidity range -1.2 < eta < 1.4 have been measured up to P-T = 8 GeV using the ZEUS detector. Diffractive and non-diffractive reactions have been selected with an average gamma p centre of mass (c.m.) energy of (W) = 180 GeV. For diffractive reactions, the p(T) spectra of the photon dissociation events have been measured in two intervals of the dissociated photon mass with mean values (M(X)) = 5 GeV and 10 GeV. The inclusive transverse momentum spectra fall exponentially in the low p(T) region. The non-diffractive data p show a pronounced high p(T) tail departing from the exponential shape. The p(T) distributions are compared to lower energy photoproduction data and to hadron-hadron collisions at a similar c.m. energy. The data are also compared to the results of a next-to-leading order QCD calculation

- Field of study
Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of Q(2) from 10 to 1280 GeV2 The evolution with Q of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding e(+)e(-) data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation

Two-jet production in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied for 160 < Q(2) < 1280 GeV2 0.01 < x < 0.1 and 0.04 < y < 0.95 with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The kinematic properties of the jets and the jet production rates are presented. The partonic scaling variables of the two-jet system and the rate of two-jet production are compared to perturbative next-to-leading order QCD calculations

Diffractive scattering of γ∗p→X+N, where N is either a
proton or a nucleonic system with MN​ < 4~GeV has been measured in deep
inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA. The cross section was determined by a novel
method as a function of the γ∗p c.m. energy W between 60 and 245~GeV
and of the mass MX​ of the system X up to 15~GeV at average Q2 values of
14 and 31~GeV2. The diffractive cross section dσdiff/dMX​ is,
within errors, found to rise linearly with W. Parameterizing the W
dependence by the form d\sigma^{diff}/dM_X \propto
(W^2)^{(2\overline{\mbox{\alpha_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}}} -2)} the DIS data
yield for the pomeron trajectory
\overline{\mbox{\alpha_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}}} = 1.23 \pm 0.02(stat) \pm
0.04 (syst) averaged over t in the measured kinematic range assuming the
longitudinal photon contribution to be zero. This value for the pomeron
trajectory is substantially larger than
\overline{\mbox{\alpha_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}}} extracted from soft
interactions. The value of \overline{\mbox{\alpha_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}}}
measured in this analysis suggests that a substantial part of the diffractive
DIS cross section originates from processes which can be described by
perturbative QCD. From the measured diffractive cross sections the diffractive
structure function of the proton F^{D(3)}_2(\beta,Q^2,
\mbox{x_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}}) has been determined, where β is the
momentum fraction of the struck quark in the pomeron. The form F^{D(3)}_2 =
constant \cdot (1/ \mbox{x_{_{I\hspace{-0.2em}P}}})^a gives a good fit to
the data in all β and Q2 intervals with $a = 1.46 \pm 0.04 (stat) \pmComment: 45 pages, including 16 figure

This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive deep inelastic scattering events produced in ep interactions at HERA. The events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function of x(p), the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of beta, the momentum fraction of the struck quark with respect to x(p), and of Q(2) in the range 6.3 10(-4) < x(p) < 10(-2), 0.1 < .beta < 0.8 and 8 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2. The x(p) dependence is consistent with the form (1/x(p))(alpha) where alpha = 1.30 +/- 0.08 (stat)(-0.14)(+0.08) (sys) in all bins of beta and Q(2). In the measured Q(2) range, the diffractive structure function approximately scales with Q(2) at fixed beta. In an Ingelman-Schlein type model where commonly used pomeron flux factor normalisations are assumed, it is found that the quarks within the pomeron do not saturate the momentum sum rule

Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of Q(2) from 10 to 1280 GeV2 The evolution with Q of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding e(+)e(-) data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation
