Characterisation of radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers with a Monte Carlo model
Measured response functions and low photon yield spectra of silicon
photomultipliers (SiPM) were compared to multi-photoelectron pulse-height
distributions generated by a Monte Carlo model. Characteristic parameters for
SiPM were derived. The devices were irradiated with 14 MeV electrons at the
Mainz microtron MAMI. It is shown that the first noticeable damage consists of
an increase in the rate of dark pulses and the loss of uniformity in the pixel
gains. Higher radiation doses reduced also the photon detection efficiency. The
results are especially relevant for applications of SiPM in fibre detectors at
high luminosity experiments.Comment: submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth.
Gain limits of a Thick GEM in high-purity Ne, Ar and Xe
The dependence of the avalanche charge gain in Thick Gas Electron Multipliers
(THGEM) on the purity of Ne, Ar and Xe filling gases was investigated. The
gain, measured with alpha-particles in standard conditions (atmospheric
pressure, room temperature), was found to considerably drop in gases purified
by non-evaporable getters. On the other hand, small N2 admixtures to noble
gases resulted in high reachable gains. The results are of general relevance in
the operation of gas-avalanche detectors in noble gases, particularly that of
two-phase cryogenic detectors for rare events.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to JINS
Transition radiation as a source of quasi-monochromatic X-rays
Transition radiation (TR) from ultrarelativistic particles is considered. It
is shown that performing collimation of the TR from the periodic N-foil stack
(parameters of which are selected in a appropriate manner) one obtains the
spectrum of the TR which has a form of a peak position of which
depends on the plasma frequency and the thickness of the radiator foils. The
height and width of the peak depend on the collimation angle . The
height of the peak for given is proportional to N. Selecting
parameters one can have the source of X-rays of desired frequency with rather

Recent results on the properties of two-phase argon avalanche detectors
The characteristic properties of two-phase Ar avalanche detectors, including
those obtained with CsI photocathode, are further studied. Such detectors are
relevant in the field of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering and dark matter
search experiments. The detectors investigated comprised a 1 cm thick liquid Ar
layer followed by a triple-GEM multiplier. In these detectors, typical gains
reaching 10000 were obtained with good reproducibility and a stable operation
for at least one day was demonstrated. Amplitude and pulse-shape
characteristics are presented under irradiation with X-rays, gamma-rays and
neutrons from different radioactive sources. The detection of both primary
scintillation and ionization signals at higher gains, at a deposited energy of

Study of Scintillator Strip with Wavelength Shifting Fiber and Silicon Photomultiplier
The performance of the cm plastic scintillator
strip with wavelength shifting fiber read-out by two novel photodetectors
called Silicon PhotoMultipliers (SiPMs) is discussed. The advantages of SiPM
relative to the traditional multichannel photomultiplier are shown. Light yield
and light attenuation measurements are presented. This technique can be used in

Physics of multi-GEM structures
We show that physics of multi-GEM structures is rather complex, regarding the
number of phenomena affecting detector performance. The high-pressure operation
in noble gases and the ion feedback are considered in more detail. It is
proposed that the dominant avalanche mechanism in He and Ne, at high pressures,
is the associative ionization. Ion feedback effects related to the dependence
on gas, pressure and gain and to possible avalanche extension outside the GEM

A High-resolution Scintillating Fiber Tracker With Silicon Photomultiplier Array Readout
We present prototype modules for a tracking detector consisting of multiple
layers of 0.25 mm diameter scintillating fibers that are read out by linear
arrays of silicon photomultipliers. The module production process is described
and measurements of the key properties for both the fibers and the readout
devices are shown. Five modules have been subjected to a 12 GeV/c proton/pion
testbeam at CERN. A spatial resolution of 0.05 mm and light yields exceeding 20
detected photons per minimum ionizing particle have been achieved, at a
tracking efficiency of more than 98.5%. Possible techniques for further
improvement of the spatial resolution are discussed.Comment: 31 pages, 27 figures, pre-print version of an article published in
