Intraoral Palatal Lipoma: A Rare Case Report

    Get PDF
Lipomas are the commonest occurring benign neoplasms of the human body originating from adipose cells. Intraoral lipomas are rare, contributing to less than 5% of all head and neck neoplasms. Even so, lipoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in swellings of the oral cavity. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment in the case of intraoral lipoma. In this case report, the lipoma was seen originating from the soft palate. It was surgically excised in toto and was subjected to histopathological investigations to reach a definitive diagnosis. This case is being reported as it is uncommon for a lipoma to have an intraoral origin and even more rare for it to be seen occurring in the palate

Background: The objective of this present study was to investigate the possible association of natural killer group (NKG) receptors gene polymorphisms and MHC class I chain-related protein A (MICA) gene polymorphism with recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA).Methods: Three single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) in NKG2D gene (rs2255336, rs2617160 and rs2617170) and one SNP in MICA gene (MICA129) rs1051792 were assessed in 100 controls and 100 patients employing polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and agarose gel electrophoresis. Results: NKG2D (rs2617160) and MICA 129 (rs1051792) variants are associated with RSA risk in North Indian women. Conclusions: The NKG2D and MICA129 gene polymorphisms may influence the success of pregnancy in North Indian women population

Confined Acoustic Phonon in CdS1-xSex Nanoparticles in Borosilicate Glass

We calculate low-frequency Raman scattering from the confined acoustic phonon modes of CdS1-xSex nanoparticles embedded in borosilicate glass. The calculation of the Raman scattering by acoustic phonons in nanoparticles has been performed by using third-order perturbation theory. The deformation potential approximation is used to describe the electronphonon interaction. The Raman-Brillouin electronic density and the electron-phonon interaction are found to increases with decreasing size of nanoparticle. A good agreement between the calculated and reported low-frequency Raman spectra is found.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (In Press

© 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Ethnopharmacological relevance: The management of diabetes mellitus management in African communities, especially in Gabon, is not well established as more than 60% of population rely on traditional treatments as primary healthcare. The aim of this review was to collect and present the scientific evidence for the use of medicinal plants that are in currect by Gabonese traditional healers to manage diabetes or hyperglycaemia based here on the pharmacological and toxicological profiles of plants with anti-diabetic activity. There are presented in order to promote their therapeutic value, ensure a safer use by population and provide some bases for further study on high potential plants reviewed. Materials and methods: Ethnobotanical studies were sourced using databases such as Online Wiley library, Pubmed, Google Scholar, PROTA, books and unpublished data including Ph.D. and Master thesis, African and Asian journals. Keywords including ‘Diabetes’ ‘Gabon’ ‘Toxicity’ ‘Constituents’ ‘hyperglycaemia’ were used. Results: A total of 69 plants currently used in Gabon with potential anti-diabetic activity have been identified in the literature, all of which have been used in in vivo or in vitro studies. Most of the plants have been studied in human or animal models for their ability to reduce blood glucose, stimulate insulin secretion or inhibit carbohydrates enzymes. Active substances have been identified in 12 out of 69 plants outlined in this review, these include Allium cepa and Tabernanthe iboga. Only eight plants have their active substances tested for anti-diabetic activity and are suitables for further investigation. Toxicological data is scarce and is dose-related to the functional parameters of major organs such as kidney and liver. Conclusion: An in-depth understanding on the pharmacology and toxicology of Gabonese anti-diabetic plants is lacking yet there is a great scope for new treatments. With further research, the use of Gabonese anti-diabetic plants is important to ensure the safety of the diabetic patients in Gabon.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Clinical comparison of Pulsair non-contact tonometer and Goldmann applanation tonometer in Indian population

Introduction: Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) is the gold standard for Intraocular Pressure (IOP) measurement but has disadvantage of being contact device and problems with portability. The aim of the study was to compare the Keeler's Pulsair noncontact tonometer (NCT) with GAT in Indian Population. Materials and methods: Eighty-one subjects were screened from a Glaucoma clinic of a tertiary care centre in North India. The IOP was measured by Pulsair NCT and GAT after explaining the procedure. Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured to avoid its bias on IOP readings. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: The mean age of subjects was 49.9 ± 8.8 (mean ± SD) years. The mean IOP as taken by Pulsair NCT was 15.79 ± 4.07 mmHg and that for GAT was 17.02 ± 4.23 mmHg (p = 0.062). The mean CCT was 0.536 ± 0.019 mm. A positive Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.909 (p = 0.0001) was found between the two instruments. Bland and Altmann analysis showed a fair agreement between the two tonometers at lower IOP range. Conclusion: Pulsair NCT can be used as a screening tool for community practices but is not reliable in the subjects with higher IOP range
