    Dynamical T-matrix theory for high-density excitons in coupled quantum wells

    Excitons in coupled quantum wells open the possibility to reach high densities close to equilibrium. In a recent experiment employing a lateral trap potential, a blue shift and a broadening of the exciton emission line has been seen (Snoke, SSC 134). The standard Hartree-Fock treatment can explain the blue shift but fails to give a finite broadening. Starting from the (spin-dependent) many-exciton Hamiltonian with direct and exchange potential, we present a dynamical T-matrix calculation for the single-exciton Green's function which is directly related to the frequency- and angle-resolved photoluminescence. The calculated spectrum is blue shifted and broadened due to exciton-exciton scattering. At high excitation, both the spectrum and the angular emission are getting narrow.     Impact of a 'diagonal' intervention on uptake of sexual and reproductive health services by female sex workers in Mozambique : a mixed-methods implementation study

Within an implementation research project enhancing uptake of SRH services by FSWs, we piloted a “diagonal” intervention, which combined strengthening of FSW-targeted services (vertical) with making public health facilities more FSW-friendly (horizontal), and tested its effect. Methods: The study applied a convergent parallel mixed-methods design to assess changes in access to SRH services. Results of structured interviews with FSWs pre-intervention (N = 311) and thereafter (N = 404) were compared with the findings of eight post-intervention focus group discussions (FGDs) with FSWs and two with FSW-peer educators (PEs). Results: Marked and statistically significant rises occurred in consistent condom use with all partners (55.3–67.7%), ever use of female condoms (37.9–54.5%), being tested for HIV in the past 6 months (56.0–76.6%), using contraception (84.5–95.4%), ever screened for cervical cancer (0.0–16.9%) and having ≥10 contacts with a PE in the past year (0.5–24.45%). Increases mostly resulted from FSW-targeted outreach, with no rise detected in utilization of public health facilities. FGD participants reported that some facilities had become more FSW-friendly, but barriers such as stock-outs, being asked for bribes and disrespectful treatment persisted. Conclusion: The combination of expanding FSW-targeted SRH services with improving access to the public health services resulted in an overall increased uptake of services, but almost exclusively because of the strengthened targeted (vertical) outreach services. Utilization of public SRH services had not yet increased and many barriers to access remained. Our diagonal approach was thus only successful in its vertical component. Improving access to the general health services remains nevertheless important and further research is needed how to reduce barriers.     Single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover region II: Broad Feshbach resonance

    We apply the formulation developed in a recent paper [Y. Ohashi and A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 72}, 013601, (2005)] for single-particle excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover to the case of a broad Feshbach resonance. At T=0, we solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes coupled equations taking into account a Bose condensate of bound states (molecules). In the case of a broad resonance, the density profile n(r)n(r), as well as the profile of the superfluid order parameter Δ~(r){\tilde \Delta}(r), are spatially spread out to the Thomas-Fermi radius, even in the crossover region. This order parameter Δ~(r){\tilde \Delta}(r) suppresses the effects of low-energy Andreev bound states on the rf-tunneling current. As a result, the peak energy in the rf-spectrum is found to occur at an energy equal to the superfluid order parameter Δ~(r=0){\tilde \Delta}(r=0) at the center of the trap, in contrast to the case of a narrow resonance, and in agreement with recent measurements. The LDA is found to give a good approximation for the rf-tunneling spectrum.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

    Bosonization as Duality

    We show that bosonization in two dimensions can be derived as a special case of the duality transformations that have recently been used to good effect in string theory. This allows the construction of the bosonic counterpart of any fermionic theory simply by `following your nose' using the standard duality transformation rules. We work through the bosonization of the Dirac fermion, the massive and massless Thirring models, and a fermion on a cylindrical spacetime as illustrative examples.Comment: plain TeX, 21 page

    Clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and outcome of dogs with presumptive spinal-only meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin

    Objectives: To summarise clinical presentation, diagnostic findings and long-term outcome for dogs clinically diagnosed with meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin affecting the spinal cord alone. Methods: Medical records were reviewed for dogs diagnosed with presumptive spinal-only meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin between 2006 and 2015. Results: 21 dogs were included; the majority presented with an acute (43%) or chronic (52%) onset of neurological signs. Ambulatory paresis was the most common neurological presentation (67%). Neurological examination most commonly revealed a T3-L3 myelopathy, and spinal hyperaesthesia was a common finding (71%). A spinal cord lesion was visible in 90% of cases on magnetic resonance imaging. Eighteen lesions (86%) showed parenchymal contrast enhancement and 17 lesions (81%) showed contrast enhancement of overlying meninges. All dogs were treated with immunosuppressive doses of glucocorticosteroids, sometimes combined with cytosine arabinoside. At time of data capture, 10/21 dogs (48%) had died or been euthanased because of the condition. Overall median survival time was 669 days. Clinical Significance: Meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dogs presenting with a progressive myelopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging features can possibly help to distinguish presumptive meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin from other more common spinal diseases. Overall, long-term survival is guarded, approximately 50% of dogs will die or be euthanased despite appropriate therapy

    Changing Campus Culture: First-Gen Students at a Predominantly White Institution

    Bentley University was founded in 1917 as an urban night school for the working-class. Throughout our past century of growth, we have evolved into a suburban, predominantly white, predominantly male, and predominantly affluent four-year residential university. To diversify our student body, Bentley recently began a series of initiatives to increase the number of first-generation college students on our campus. Consequently, the number of first-gen students to join the university in fall 2022 increased by 65%, such that 25% of the incoming first-year class, roughly 300 students, are now first-generation. These changes in the demographics of our student body must be met with significant cultural change on our campus if our first-gen students are to succeed at Bentley and beyond. Our presentation will discuss strategies we employ to initiate and sustain changes in our campus culture, policies, business practices and mindsets, including financial support to students, new faculty and staff positions, new events and cultural traditions, an emphasis on student data collection, analysis, and governance, and, most importantly, leadership from the highest levels of the institution and collaboration across divisions, specifically Academic and Student Affairs

    Reliability and validity of a domain-specific last 7-d sedentary time questionnaire

    Purpose: The objective of this study is to examine test-retest reliability, criterion validity, and absolute agreement of a self-report, last 7-d sedentary behavior questionnaire (SIT-Q-7d), which assesses total daily sedentary time as an aggregate of sitting/lying down in five domains (meals, transportation, occupation, nonoccupational screen time, and other sedentary time). Dutch (DQ) and English (EQ) versions of the questionnaire were examined. Methods: Fifty-one Flemish adults (ages 39.4 +/- 11.1 yr) wore a thigh accelerometer (activPAL3 (TM)) and simultaneously kept a domain log for 7 d. The DQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.3 wk). Thigh-acceleration sedentary time was log annotated to create comparable domain-specific and total sedentary time variables. Four hundred two English adults (ages 49.6 +/- 7.3 yr) wore a combined accelerometer and HR monitor (Actiheart (R)) for 6 d to objectively measure total sedentary time. The EQ was subsequently completed twice (median test-retest interval: 3.4 wk). In both samples, the questionnaire reference frame overlapped with the criterion measure administration period. All participants had five or more valid days of criterion data, including one or more weekend day. Results: Test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (95% CI)) was fair to good for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.68 (0.50-0.81); EQ: 0.53 (0.44-0.62)) and poor to excellent for domain-specific sedentary time (DQ: from 0.36 (0.10-0.57) (meals) to 0.66 (0.46-0.79) (occupation); EQ: from 0.45 (0.35-0.54) (other sedentary time) to 0.76 (0.71-0.81) (meals)). For criterion validity (Spearman rho), significant correlations were found for total sedentary time (DQ: 0.52; EQ: 0.22; all P <0.001). Compared with domain-specific criterion variables (DQ), modest-to-strong correlations were found for domain-specific sedentary time (from 0.21 (meals) to 0.76 (P < 0.001) (screen time)). The questionnaire generally overestimated sedentary time compared with criterion measures. Conclusion: The SIT-Q-7d appears to be a useful tool for ranking individuals in large-scale observational studies examining total and domain-specific sitting

    Rotation, activity, and lithium abundance in cool binary stars

    We have used two robotic telescopes to obtain time-series high-resolution spectroscopy and V I and/or by photometry for a sample of 60 active stars. Orbital solutions are presented for 26 SB2 and 19 SB1 systems with unprecedented phase coverage and accuracy. The total of 6,609 R=55,000 echelle spectra are also used to systematically determine effective temperatures, gravities, metallicities, rotational velocities, lithium abundances and absolute H{\alpha}-core fluxes as a function of time. The photometry is used to infer unspotted brightness, V - I and/or b - y colors, spot-induced brightness amplitudes and precise rotation periods. Our data are complemented by literature data and are used to determine rotation-temperature-activity relations for active binary components. We also relate lithium abundance to rotation and surface temperature. We find that 74% of all known rapidly-rotating active binary stars are synchronized and in circular orbits but 26% are rotating asynchronously of which half have Prot > Porb and e > 0. Because rotational synchronization is predicted to occur before orbital circularization active binaries should undergo an extra spin-down besides tidal dissipation. We suspect this to be due to a magnetically channeled wind with its subsequent braking torque. We find a steep increase of rotation period with decreasing effective temperature for active stars. For inactive, single giants with Prot > 100 d, the relation is much weaker. Our data also indicate a period-activity relation for H{\alpha} of the form RH{\alpha} \propto P - 0.24 for binaries and RH{\alpha} \propto P -0.14 for singles. Lithium abundances in our sample increase with effective temperature. On average, binaries of comparable effective temperature appear to exhibit 0.25 dex less surface lithium than singles. We also find a trend of increased Li abundance with rotational period of form log n(Li) \propto - 0.6 log Prot

    Rapid turnover of effector-memory CD4(+) T cells in healthy humans

    Memory T cells can be divided into central-memory (T(CM)) and effector-memory (T(EM)) cells, which differ in their functional properties. Although both subpopulations can persist long term, it is not known whether they are maintained by similar mechanisms. We used in vivo labeling with deuterated glucose to measure the turnover of CD4(+) T cells in healthy humans. The CD45R0(+)CCR7(-) T(EM) subpopulation was shown to have a rapid proliferation rate of 4.7% per day compared with 1.5% per day for CD45R0(+)CCR7(+) T(CM) cells; these values are equivalent to average intermitotic (doubling) times of 15 and 48 d, respectively. In contrast, the CD45RA(+)CCR7(+) naive CD4(+) T cell population was found to be much longer lived, being labeled at a rate of only 0.2% per day (corresponding to an intermitotic time of approximately 1 yr). These data indicate that human CD4(+) T(EM) cells constitute a short-lived cell population that requires continuous replenishment in vivo
