Development of a Translator from LLVM to ACL2
In our current work a library of formally verified software components is to
be created, and assembled, using the Low-Level Virtual Machine (LLVM)
intermediate form, into subsystems whose top-level assurance relies on the
assurance of the individual components. We have thus undertaken a project to
build a translator from LLVM to the applicative subset of Common Lisp accepted
by the ACL2 theorem prover. Our translator produces executable ACL2 formal
models, allowing us to both prove theorems about the translated models as well
as validate those models by testing. The resulting models can be translated and
certified without user intervention, even for code with loops, thanks to the
use of the def::ung macro which allows us to defer the question of termination.
Initial measurements of concrete execution for translated LLVM functions
indicate that performance is nearly 2.4 million LLVM instructions per second on
a typical laptop computer. In this paper we overview the translation process
and illustrate the translator's capabilities by way of a concrete example,
including both a functional correctness theorem as well as a validation test

Formal Verification of the AAMP-FV Microcode
This report describes the experiences of Collins Avionics & Communications and SRI International in formally specifying and verifying the microcode in a Rockwell proprietary microprocessor, the AAMP-FV, using the PVS verification system. This project built extensively on earlier experiences using PVS to verify the microcode in the AAMP5, a complex, pipelined microprocessor designed for use in avionics displays and global positioning systems. While the AAMP5 experiment demonstrated the technical feasibility of formal verification of microcode, the steep learning curve encountered left unanswered the question of whether it could be performed at reasonable cost. The AAMP-FV project was conducted to determine whether the experience gained on the AAMP5 project could be used to make formal verification of microcode cost effective for safety-critical and high volume devices
Different partial volume correction methods lead to different conclusions: An 18F-FDG-PET study of aging.
A cross-sectional group study of the effects of aging on brain metabolism as measured with 18F-FDG-PET was performed using several different partial volume correction (PVC) methods: no correction (NoPVC), Meltzer (MZ), Müller-Gärtner (MG), and the symmetric geometric transfer matrix (SGTM) using 99 subjects aged 65-87years from the Harvard Aging Brain study. Sensitivity to parameter selection was tested for MZ and MG. The various methods and parameter settings resulted in an extremely wide range of conclusions as to the effects of age on metabolism, from almost no changes to virtually all of cortical regions showing a decrease with age. Simulations showed that NoPVC had significant bias that made the age effect on metabolism appear to be much larger and more significant than it is. MZ was found to be the same as NoPVC for liberal brain masks; for conservative brain masks, MZ showed few areas correlated with age. MG and SGTM were found to be similar; however, MG was sensitive to a thresholding parameter that can result in data loss. CSF uptake was surprisingly high at about 15% of that in gray matter. The exclusion of CSF from SGTM and MG models, which is almost universally done, caused a substantial loss in the power to detect age-related changes. This diversity of results reflects the literature on the metabolism of aging and suggests that extreme care should be taken when applying PVC or interpreting results that have been corrected for partial volume effects. Using the SGTM, significant age-related changes of about 7% per decade were found in frontal and cingulate cortices as well as primary visual and insular cortices
Efficient execution in an automated reasoning environment
We describe a method that permits the user of a mechanized mathematical logic to write
elegant logical definitions while allowing sound and efficient execution. In particular, the
features supporting this method allow the user to install, in a logically sound way, alternative
executable counterparts for logically defined functions. These alternatives are often much
more efficient than the logically equivalent terms they replace. These features have been
implemented in the ACL2 theorem prover, and we discuss several applications of the features

A review of fMRI simulation studies
Simulation studies that validate statistical techniques for fMRI data are challenging due to the complexity of the data. Therefore, it is not surprising that no common data generating process is available (i.e. several models can be found to model BOLD activation and noise). Based on a literature search, a database of simulation studies was compiled. The information in this database was analysed and critically evaluated focusing on the parameters in the simulation design, the adopted model to generate fMRI data, and on how the simulation studies are reported. Our literature analysis demonstrates that many fMRI simulation studies do not report a thorough experimental design and almost consistently ignore crucial knowledge on how fMRI data are acquired. Advice is provided on how the quality of fMRI simulation studies can be improved
Empirical transmit field bias correction of T1w/T2w myelin maps
T1-weighted divided by T2-weighted (T1w/T2w) myelin maps were initially developed for neuroanatomical analyses such as identifying cortical areas, but they are increasingly used in statistical comparisons across individuals and groups with other variables of interest. Existing T1w/T2w myelin maps contain radiofrequency transmit field (B1+) biases, which may be correlated with these variables of interest, leading to potentially spurious results. Here we propose two empirical methods for correcting these transmit field biases using either explicit measures of the transmit field or alternatively a \u27pseudo-transmit\u27 approach that is highly correlated with the transmit field at 3T. We find that the resulting corrected T1w/T2w myelin maps are both better neuroanatomical measures (e.g., for use in cross-species comparisons), and more appropriate for statistical comparisons of relative T1w/T2w differences across individuals and groups (e.g., sex, age, or body-mass-index) within a consistently acquired study at 3T. We recommend that investigators who use the T1w/T2w approach for mapping cortical myelin use these B1+ transmit field corrected myelin maps going forward
Cardiovascular and metabolic health is associated with functional brain connectivity in middle-aged and older adults: Results from the Human Connectome Project-Aging study
Several cardiovascular and metabolic indicators, such as cholesterol and blood pressure have been associated with altered neural and cognitive health as well as increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer\u27s disease in later life. In this cross-sectional study, we examined how an aggregate index of cardiovascular and metabolic risk factor measures was associated with correlation-based estimates of resting-state functional connectivity (FC) across a broad adult age-span (36-90+ years) from 930 volunteers in the Human Connectome Project Aging (HCP-A). Increased (i.e., worse) aggregate cardiometabolic scores were associated with reduced FC globally, with especially strong effects in insular, medial frontal, medial parietal, and superior temporal regions. Additionally, at the network-level, FC between core brain networks, such as default-mode and cingulo-opercular, as well as dorsal attention networks, showed strong effects of cardiometabolic risk. These findings highlight the lifespan impact of cardiovascular and metabolic health on whole-brain functional integrity and how these conditions may disrupt higher-order network integrity
SMA CO(J=6-5) and 435 micron interferometric imaging of the nuclear region of Arp 220
We have used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to make the first interferometric
observations (beam size ~1") of the 12CO J=6-5 line and 435 micron (690 GHz)
continuum emission toward the central region of the nearby ULIRG Arp 220. These
observations resolve the eastern and western nuclei from each other, in both
the molecular line and dust continuum emission. At 435 micron, the peak
intensity of the western nucleus is stronger than the eastern nucleus, and the
difference in peak intensities is less than at longer wavelengths. Fitting a
simple model to the dust emission observed between 1.3 mm and 435 micron
suggests that dust emissivity power law index in the western nucleus is near
unity and steeper in the eastern nucleus, about 2, and that the dust emission
is optically thick at the shorter wavelength. Comparison with single dish
measurements indicate that the interferometer observations are missing ~60% of
the dust emission, most likely from a spatially extended component to which
these observations are not sensitive. The 12CO J=6-5 line observations clearly
resolve kinematically the two nuclei. The distribution and kinematics of the
12CO J=6-5 line appear to be very similar to lower J CO lies observed at
similar resolution. Analysis of multiple 12CO line intensities indicates that
the molecular gas in both nuclei have similar excitation conditions, although
the western nucleus is warmer and denser. The excitation conditions are similar
to those found in other extreme environments, including M82, Mrk 231, and BR
1202-0725. Simultaneous lower resolution observations of the 12CO, 13CO, and
C18O J=2-1 lines show that the 13CO and C18O lines have similar intensities,
which suggests that both of these lines are optically thick, or possibly that

Deceptively cold dust in the massive starburst galaxy GN20 at z ∼4
We present new observations, carried out with IRAM NOEMA, of the atomic neutral carbon transitions [C» I](3P1-3P0) at 492 GHz and [C» I](3P2-3P1) at 809 GHz of GN20, a well-studied star-bursting galaxy at z = 4.05. The high luminosity line ratio [C» I](3P2-3P1) /[C» I](3P1-3P0) implies an excitation temperature of 48+14-9 K, which is significantly higher than the apparent dust temperature of Td = 33 ± 2 K (β = 1.9) derived under the common assumption of an optically thin far-infrared dust emission, but fully consistent with Td = 52 ± 5 K of a general opacity model where the optical depth (τ) reaches unity at a wavelength of λ0 = 170 ± 23 μm. Moreover, the general opacity solution returns a factor of ∼2× lower dust mass and, hence, a lower molecular gas mass for a fixed gas-to-dust ratio, than with the optically thin dust model. The derived properties of GN20 thus provide an appealing solution to the puzzling discovery of starbursts appearing colder than main-sequence galaxies above z > 2.5, in addition to a lower dust-to-stellar mass ratio that approaches the physical value predicted for starburst galaxies
Spectral Energy Distributions of type 2 QSOs: obscured star formation at high redshifts
We present new mid-infrared and submillimetre observations for a sample of
eight high redshift type-2 QSOs located in the Chandra Deep Field South. The
sources are X-ray absorbed with luminosities in excess of 10^44 erg/s. Two of
the targets have robust detections, S/N > 4, while a further three targets are
marginally detected with S/N > =2.5. All sources are detected in multiple
mid-infrared bands with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The multiwavelength
spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the type-2 QSOs are compared to those
of two local ultraluminous galaxies (Arp220 and IR22491) in order to assess
contributions from a star-forming component in various parts of the SED. We
suggest that their submillimetre emission is possibly due to a starburst while
a large fraction of the mid-infrared energy is likely to originate in the
obscured central quasar. Using the mid-infrared and submm observations we
derive infrared luminosities which are found to be in excess of L>10^12Lsun.
The submillimetre (850micron) to X-ray (2 keV) spectral indices (alpha_SX) span
a wide range. About half of the type-2 QSOs have values typical for a
Compton-thick AGN with only 1 per cent of the nuclear emission seen through
scattering and, the remaining with values typical of submm-bright galaxies.
Combining the available observational evidence we outline a possible scenario
for the early stages of evolution of these sources.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
